Today, Norquist lost another devotee, with Rep. Timothy Johnson (R-IL) saying that while he signed the pledge for his first election, he now considers Norquist's stance "disingenuous and irresponsible":

"I would never in a million years have considered this as some kind of a locked-in-granite pledge. Frankly, I didn't even remember it. That shows you how obscure it was to me," Johnson said.

Last year, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) got into a high-profile spat with Norquist regarding the latter's insistence that cutting subsidies for ethanol would constitute a tax increase, calling Norquist's position "ludicrous."

Norquist is so evil he's making me say something nice about Coburn.

If I go to the supermarket today and buy a bag of frozen peas that's on sale for $1 off, then I go back and next week it's no longer on sale, that doesn't mean they hiked the price by a buck!!!

Honestly, this arrogant and ignorant little puke is holding the GOP hostage, and the few stray sane voices in the party are being punished for rejecting him.

HE IS NOT A HERO

He threw away his principles when the going got tough. I personally like that he did because not raising taxes when necessary is ignorant. But he still went back on his word. He even uses a counter-example by saying "What if I pledged to never to get involved in an armed conflict and then America is attacked".

I have met people who would rather be beaten to death then lift a finger in violence. Because they have principles.

Anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist's "Taxpayer Protection Pledge" - which states that the signing lawmaker will never raise taxes for any reason, ever - has held Republicans in lockstep against tax increases in recent years.

It isn't the pledge it is that they are owned by and work for the super wealthy to the detriment of the middle class and poor. It's like a fat ugly dude signing a celibacy pledge in highschool. It isn't the pledge keeping him from getting laid.

This is retarded. If your bus-driver makes a pledge to never use his brakes under any circumstances, you're going to berate him for not holding to his convictions when he realizes how retarded that pledge was as he's accelerating toward a cliff?

He's an idiot for making the pledge to begin with, but being upset because someone is going back on their word to destroy the country because it shows a lack of conviction is retarded even amongst the retarded. It's retarded2.

It's almost as if Grover's opinion on tax policy is directly related to the political affiliation of the person that made the suggestion...naaaaah.

That's the crux now isn't it? I mean, this guy made the right call... eventually. I think part of the problem is how lightly the pledge was made. The comments when breaking it all reflect a "Meh, I was just doing what was popular at the time" attitude. When putting yourself in the public sphere and signing your name to a cause or pledge, you should actually know what it's about and really believe in it.

If these rejections came from a place other than "Meh, now this is what is popular", then you'd have the rejections sounding like they came from careful introspection or learning more about the topic than they knew when they signed it. this is just coming across as parroting what every thinking person has said about the shortfalls of the pledge. so to that extent I think HellRaisingHoosier has a valid critique.

Grover's dad (i) named him Grover, and (ii) stole his food to teach him about taxes. That he grew up to be a crank and a maladjusted weirdo is not surprising. That he has tremendous sway over the operation of our government is a tragedy.

I say we thrash both of them, then. If Grover's father is no longer with us, then dig him up and thrash him anyway.

Seriously, if there is anyone in the country in more desperate need of a steel-toed boot to the cock than Grover Norquist, I'm yet to see him.
