In all reality, I cannot fathom how people are able to deny that the walk happened. Thousands of people have seen rockets and shuttles launch into space over the decades. The hardest part has already been achieved and viewed by many.

Shouldn't they wake up that astronaut that's still ALSEP?

2. What happened to the LRV, did it run out of gas and they had to walk back to the LM?

That's what I was wondering. Who drives a car several blocks from home, and then just leaves it? Especially when those several blocks are on a dusty sphere in the heavens with no oxygen. But then again, looking at the scale, it appears to only be about 100m from where the LM was. In fact, on second thought, I'd say that judging from the tracks, my real question is "why does it appear they only drove the LRV around in circles within about 100m of the LM?"

Having seen the second episode of Futurama MANY times, I'm pretty sure they should've been jumping craters.

Just a guess, but if I were working at NASA in the 1960-70's, I'd tell them to park it 100m from the LM so it wouldn't be damaged when they ascended. That way, when Apollo 25 returns to the site, all they need to bring are fresh batteries and use the existing hardware.

I've often wondered about that. In the videos available of the ascent stage departing, the camera tracks the stage ascending. I assume then, that ground control was controlling the camera, though the 2.7 second or so light lag might have made that troublesome. I always was curious about how they got those shots, but that makes perfect sense.

I only knew because he was on Science Friday (new window) last week. One thing he didn't touch on in his testimony, though, is that we quit dreaming waaaayyy back then in the early 70's, so it is not a new phenomenon. I am old enough to remember John Glenn's orbital flight, along with all the Mercury and Apollo flights. And I remember all the hand wringing from Congress about how expensive the space program was, particularly once it became clear the Russians had given up on getting there. I also remember the Golden Fleece Award being doled out at least once to NASA for wasteful spending of the taxpayers' money.

Another thing he touched on during the Science Friday show was that economies that are vibrant and innovating don't export jobs...only tired, spent economies do. So that the obvious course of action is to begin investing again in science and technology to jump start the economy to sustained healthy growth.

Don't give up hope, man.

They wanted to get the stage's flight kept into view plus they didn't want the ultra-light LRV to be knocked over by the lift-off exhaust. DERP!

Oh, and before one of you Brainiacs ask "Who was operating the camera as the Ascent Stage lifted off?", it was remote-operated from Houston, which was very tricky to pull off because of the 4 second delay of signals from Earth to the Moon. After being semi-successful with 15 and 16 did they finally manage to do a properly timed shot when Apollo 17 lifted off.

Yeah. The GOP would get behind a robust space program in a heart beat, if only because it is a bottomless pit into which the government can pour money for their corporate friends without either, 1) getting a lot of folks killed in some far off land (which generates a lot of pushback from the peons), or 2) inflating our currency. The only problem is that pesky gadfly Norquisk and his damned Tax Inquisition. Space costs money, and they've all taken that inconvenient pledge not to raise taxes...even on the peasants. :)
