I will, however, watch it. I just wish they were doing more with the book. The Hillary stuff would be awesome.

Oh, an the 'unlikely' tag was for the possibility of me feeling the smallest bit of pity for poor Sarah.

If, after the campaign, Sarah had quietly returned to Alaska, shamefaced over her trouncing, her exposure as a poorly-prepared dimwit and her exploitation of her family I'm sure the average person WOULD feel bad for her.

Instead? She climbed up on the cross, doubled-down on the derp and screeched for all to hear, and she hasn't stopped.

You know, when she hit the national stage, I did feel sorry for her, because she was clearly not prepared for it. Not in the slightest.

That sort of changed, when she doubled down on willful ignorance, and tried to make that a virtue for herself. That willful shroud of ignorance has been her armor to the Idiot Brigade who would make her their queen, insulating her from dangerous facts or the slings and arrows of outrageous figures. When she then decided to monetize that willful ignorance, and make it her brand, then she pretty much became just another carny in my mind, and not even a good one, because at least the guy who rooks you on the basketball toss, he gives you a little bit of a show, and Sarah's show is her family on display and that particular level of dysfunction that she allowed tells you haven't scratched the surface of the level of Crazy contained within this woman.

And America needs to heed the advice that my father gave me years ago, and a kernel of advice that I've tried to heed. It is simple, it is clear, and it is true:

Never stick your dick in Crazy.

If that were true, many of us would not be here today. Not that that would be a bad thing, I suppose.

I felt a little bad for her- she clearly had no idea what she was doing, and she was simply not ready for prime time, and the GOP threw her to the wolves for sport.

And then she made being not ready for prime time into a career, and I don't give a fark about her anymore. She's bad for this country, and I hope she gets eaten by a bear.

Does anyone know if this movie is based on insider knowledge about what happened... or is it just a movie with stuff the producer want us to believe?

Yeah, I remember the outrage on Fark every time she was called "coont" or "whore". Farkers are cosistent like that.

How's it going to make me feel about McCain?

2012-03-08 09:06:15 AM
Instead of Palin as VP, we got Biden......who, for what it is worth, has provided tons of entertainment here on Fark during the past few years.

/might, if there is nothing else to do, watch the movie to see how the democrat loving producers make fun of her.

This is what I want to know also. How much of this is based on reality or just what some one thinks happened?

hugram: Does anyone know if this movie is based on insider knowledge about what happened... or is it just a movie with stuff the producer want us to believe?

From what I understand, the people involved with the movie and the book insist that everything has been verified by eyewitnesses. The Palin camp, however, wants the movie labeled as "fictional" by HBO. I suppose we'll have to draw our own conclusions.

It's based off Halperin's book, and Halperin's opinion of Halperin's insider status is quite high.

My guess: there's a lot of post-facto rationalization and ass-covering that he reports as gospel truth, but no publicly refutable factual errors.

2012-03-08 09:09:24 AM
Great timing, you know, election year and all. you would think this would torpedo her chance at a brokered convention, but up is down and black is white in GOP land.

According to the makers, interviews with staffers/aids/etc. According to Palin, it's MADE UP BY SATAN. With anything of this nature, it's hard to say how much is true.

2012-03-08 09:12:12 AM
So, it's like the book then. Palin was not portrayed as a monster; merely as an ambitious politician that seized an opportunity to greatly further her career, even if she was very poorly qualified for it. That's definitely understandable and nobody can begrudge her for that. She wasn't vetted properly and when that became evident, the McCain campaign thought it would somehow be possible to prepare her for the national stage in a matter of days. That's not on her.

And then she became Queen Bee of a wretched hive, and all goodwill towards her disappeared.

2012-03-08 09:13:02 AM
I suspect I'll feel bad for her like I felt bad for W after watching "W." She's incompetent, and her handlers pushed her into the spotlight and controlled her at the onset.

With that said, Palin morphed into an unbelievably self-centered media whore with no apparent desire apart from self promotion. Any initial sympathy is long gone, but you almost have to give her some credit for gaming the system and making a fortune off of it.

What's that? Sarah batted her eyes again? She must be trying to buy another vacation house.

Everything I came to say has been said at least three times. She was thrown into the national spot light with almost no prep, and really had no chance to develop as a national-level politician. I feel a little sorry for her on that.

But then she decided to go the easy money route, and only focused on her own personal interests. She can go drown in a bowl of dicks for all I care.

Based on a trueish story. Certainly none of the dialog is verbatim, but the existence of the meetings portrayed actually did happen. As for tone and character positioning, well that's all up to one's opinion. I don't believe this movie or the book it's based on set out to be anti-Palin. More Anti-Bill Kristol (Palin's creator) than anything else.

From what I understand it's based off of McCain's campaign manager's experience on the campaign trail. The article I read yesterday said Steve Schmidt was doing some serious soul searching about picking Sarah. He feels responsible for turning politics into a side show of sorts by picking a blathering idiot for the VP spot. Link (new window)

I must have missed that scene in Children Of Men, must be in the director's cut.

I feel sorry for anyone who gets thrown into that political meat grinder, up to a point, she did agree to it. Just from the clip they showed on TDS, it seems like she had no concept of the kind of bloodsport she'd volunteered for.

Of course it would, Palin's short run as VP candidate was like finding out your kid's retarded after you throw them in a lake to teach them to swim.

I was hoping they'd cast DiCaprio.

Thanks to all of you for responding to my question. I do have HBO and I was not sure if I wanted to see this movie since I didn't know how much truth was used to make this movie. .

I already dislike Palin very much... I don't need a movie based on lies to dislike her even more.

Republicans to attack movie as a smear job and then remind their followers that Bill Maher is also on HBO so everybody should call up HBO and cancel their subscriptions and tell them why in 5....4....3...

But yeah, she did neither of things.

Yes, a billion times this. Julianne Moore having filthy, filthy sex AS Sarah Palin? Hell, just talking dirty would be enough. To Bristol. In a bathtub full of baby oil.

I want to read this book.

Palin has classic "hot girl syndrome". All her life, people have been telling her how smart she is, but when she actually goes out and talks to the public, it's obvious she cannot express a complete or coherent thought.

CPennypacker: If I was Sarah Palin I'd be flattered they chose Julianne Moore to play me

I'd like to see her play me in the movie of my life. Not that it would be a movie worth seeing, and she has no physical resemblance to me whatsoever. I just think that would be quite a stretch for her, and it might be a fun challenge.

She wasn't thrown anywhere. She could have declined the offer on any number of perfectly legitimate grounds including: 'My minor daughter is pregnant out of wedlock and I don't think that's the image the GOP wants to project.

"Which daughter?"
"Um, all of them, any of them"

2012-03-08 09:38:01 AM
Her problem is she doesn't even realize what she doesn't know. If she did, there would be a chance for her to attempt to learn some basic information about the world and apply reason to this knowledge to have some potential at being able to deal in a rational way with public policy issues. Instead, she takes the lazy way out and just spouts idiotic talking points in an emotionally charged way and claims to be a victim.

Which is just another way of saying that she's an idiot.

2012-03-08 09:41:32 AM
I read an article about the producers' rationalization for leaving out the Democratic campaign. They said it would be too hard to cast a sitting President (bullshiat, W came out when Dubya was still in office IIRC, though I can't think of a dramatic off the top of my head that could do a convincing Obama) and that the drama in that campaign played out too publicly, so there wasn't as much of a story to tell.

Which is also bullshiat, because there was a lot of backroom dealing in the Democratic campaign that the public wasn't aware of. The establishment wasn't too crazy about Hillary since they thought she was too polarizing a figure and would energize the Republican base, and Obama was basically drafted into running. The Edwards clusterfark would be awesome to dramatize as well.
