soupbone: Pokey.Clyde: You know, if she was bright enough to read the instructions on/in a box of condoms, she would never have had this problem.

Personal responsibility be damned! You're suppose to blame the world and every one of its inhabitants for your problems.

Gyrfalcon: Regardless of how one feels about personal responsibility, etc., I find it absolutely nauseating that anyone would try to justify or condone the public humiliation of a child in front of her peers.

And she's a "bad example"? Maybe she should just sew a big red letter "A" on her clothes and stand on the pillory for an hour to make you purists happy.

I'll be satisfied with nothing short of branding!

\the kid gets to heat the brand right?

Not only that, she wasn't avoiding responsibility. She was just trying to get an education while being pregnant. You know, a right guaranteed to her by LAW. There are reasons why laws like this exist.

She was purposely shamed by an ADULT administrator that was pissed because she was forced to let the girl come back to school. That kind of embarrassment can be devastating to a young girl.

THIS IS NOT 1865.

8th grade... *thinks back*... I was 12 for most of 8th grade. Most of the class was more like 13... so this happened what, a year or two ago? What is the normal age for Americans in 8th grade anyway? She may not be all that retarded, just in the older side of the class. I think my parents had the option to put me in school next year instead, in which case I would have been 13 for most of 8th grade and turned 14 at the end. If they have something like that, or the story is old, it doesn't seem that unnatural.

Though I'm slightly confused... was she going to keep going to school with the kid? Or does getting kicked out mean she has to repeat a year? Getting booted at 8th grade from a school that only goes up to 8th grade when you're going to have a kid anyway that will presumably take a few months of off-time to deal with seems like quitting your job and having your boss yell "you can't quit, you're fired!" What difference does it even make at that point?

Though it's been covered, why would you assume that someone who can't spell HIPAA knows who is covered by it?

Slut-shaming, eh? Why don't they get to the, uh, root of the problem and force any boy caught sporting an erection in this school to stand before his peers, to be mocked and reviled as an abomination before the Lord and a threat to our American way of life? It takes two sluts to make a baby.

I'm still completely motherfarking confused as to how the War Against Women and the War To Make Sex Joyless and Miserable snuck up on us like this.

How exactly did this thinking go? Oh, hey, we killed Osama Bin Laden and a bunch of Al Qaeda leaders, now we don't really have enough terrorists to fight anymore. Hmmm, who can we fight with that we can battle and battle against but never get rid of? OH I KNOW. HOW ABOUT WOMEN.

And making sex not fun? I guess after the economy tanked, we got too used to life sucking. Young americans everywhere lowered their expectations, and prepared for a long grim, haul. Well, since economic ruin hadn't gutted their spirits completely and sent them running back to church for comfort, I guess someone decided they needed to have sex taken away from them as well, on the theory that if they are miserable enough they will feel like life is hell and focus on heaven instead.

Or is she in 8th grade now and she was in something else when she got kicked out? That would explain why she cares but then I'm confused by the age again, unless that's just normal there. They do have elementary schools that go up to 8th grade, which seems odd to me...

Good point. That means she should be humiliated in a public forum...because she is a slut. Limbaugh would agree with you.

I'm more concerned with her apparent belief that not explicitly telling people she's pregnant will somehow keep them from knowing. Not sure where your sense of outrage came from, as I didn't say anything about the correctness of humiliating her in public. It is interesting to note how you are attempting to shame me in a public forum by associating me with Rush Limbaugh, though. I thought you didn't care for that sort of thing.

It's a boarding school. I imagine it goes to 8th grade because after that, they'll go on to a prep or secondary boarding school someplace else.

Why its called an "elementary" school, that I can't tell you.

From what I have read pre-Revolution America would make Vegas under the mob look like Disneyland; those folks knew how to party. There's more to American history than the sterilized version they give you in school.

Hopefully she gets something out of this and hopefully she uses it to make her life better for her and her kid. The school violated her rights and that's not right. Hopefully the kids learn something from this like what their rights are since American schools anywhere don't do a very good job of teaching this at all.

I suggest we follow the women of Liberia and go on a sex strike. If (straight) politicians couldn't get laid, how fast do you think they'd stop with these ridiculous laws? (I'd say though, make an exception for men in your life who already agree this is all nonsense).

Too bad enough women on the right feel more strongly about doing their 'wifely duties' than they do about bringing change...

my ex GF got it from a teacher when she was a teenager,
made fun of her in front of the class for her slutty clothes.

i'd like to think that if he'd known her dad started raping her when she was 4 years old
he might have been slightly less cruel about her twisted response to the horror.

Clearly, this was a bad case in particular, but in regards to the phenomenon of Fark people being aghast at slut-shaming....

As a man who has always enjoyed the existance of sluts, perhaps its not a bad thing for society to call into shame some of the behavior that the teenmom/jersey shore generation has shoved in their face at all times.

Perhaps it does not benefit society to have 13 year olds seeing getting pregnant as merely a ticket to attention. If you have to make them feel ashamed of being a slut to accomplish that, so be it.

I think a sex strike is a fantastic idea but I don't think the wifely duties part would be the problem. I wouldn't feel right going on a sex strike because my husband is pro-birth control and equal rights for chicks etc. And we don't live in the same state right now so that point is kind of moo. The idiot men trying to enforce this crap generally have wives that go along with them so who's left?

Give an example of a major government that was a Christian theocracy anytime, anyplace. Sure there's been religious persecution against non-Christians. Sure there's been kings who claimed to rule by the grace of God.

Look for one in the modern world and the best you'll find are countries like Malta and Monaco. Unlike Islam, there is fundamentlally no Christian impulse to create theocratic governments.

Christianity doesn't promote ritual shaming of unwed mothers either.
Unfortunately, what Catholicism seems to promote is sheltering of criminal priests who abuse their flocks.

Spain, from 1936 until 1975. Francisco Franco ran the place like it was his own personal tithing plate, and had the Franciscans supporting him politically the whole time. He ran the country based on the Christian version of Sharia, which is really the same thing. He had the total support of the Roman Church, who protected him from outside criticism and provided foreign soldiers to support his regime. As long as the "Church" had his back, nobody would touch him, and he was a major US Ally against the Soviets throughout his time as Dictator.

I keep seeing this and I can't tell if people are serious. And not in a ooh look at this funny picture of The Joker kind of notsureifserious. Yeah AFTER A FEW MONTHS they would've figured it out but for a few months she could make peace with it herself and enjoy her last few months not being teased and bullied. I'm sure she wasn't elated that her dumb teenage decision backfired.

Adult women who get pregnant generally like to tell people on their own time in their own way. If some woman somewhere wants to think twice about telling her mother-in-law right away I can't imagine having a high school full of sweaty, zitty arseholes finding out without permission; and the principal pretty much gave them a green light to treat her like crap. You know what stupid teenagers do when they aren't just being blunt and insensitive? They're asking stupid questions. Telling their parents. Whispering and gossiping. Maybe four months of it would've been a lot less painful than the duration of the pregnancy.
