Nice to see Jamie getting screentime. IIRC he wasn't in the second book at all.

I think he had a scene or two with Catelyn Stark. But otherwise, he didn't have much to do until the third book.

They show a lot of Robb Stark too, and I think he's only talked about in the second book. I think the show might veer from Martin's often-frustrating way of keeping so many cool scenes off-stage. I don't always want to hear about events via raven.

I kinda think that's in keeping with the setting of the novels, in that technological milieu sometimes you just didn't hear about anything except by raven or third- or fourth-hand word-of-mouth.

From what I understand this season is going to be bridging between books two and three.

I re watched the first season last week in anticipation of s.2. It's a little easier to follow the second time around.

Can't wait.

/Also just started watching the Wire. Watched for about 14 hours straight last Saturday. About to start s.3. Why did I wait so long?

//It's not television, it's HBO.

HBO does one heck of a mindf*ck with it's original programming. They start teasing stuff months before it's premieres...The teasers for GoT started in February or January if I recall.

That being said...this show needs to come back now!

They really like the 'kick-ass monologue with pre/post/mid-sex activities in the background' as a plot device. The Brothel Scene and Pycelle's monologue while Ros is cleaning up are both fantastic pieces of writing even without the surrounding sexual content.

I dunno. I tried to watch the first episode yesterday, fully planning to get thoroughly besotted with it, based on about a zillion recommendations. After the show introduced the two hundredth character, they all started to blur together and I had no idea what the overall plot was, because there seemed to be about sixteen ongoing in the first twenty minutes. I'm used to shows that have a high barrier to entry - I've been a Doctor Who fan for about thirty years - and I hope I'm not a complete moron, but if I keep watching will I eventually reach a point where I start to care about some of these people?

From what my brother said when he was watching it with me, it's initially kind of hard to follow if you haven't read the books. There are a lot of different plot threads that are related but not really directly interacting, and the characters involved in them end up scattered across the setting within a few chapters. I don't know if watching it a second time would help or not in that department.

I hadn't read the books when I watched the first season, so I turned to the HBO guide for all the houses and stuff. It did help the barrier to entry. Eventually you figure it all out though. No more complicated than The Wire.

I generally like sf/fantasy but I find this show only mildly watchable. The acting is generally hammy, the action amateurish and the whole thing kind of cheap-looking. Also how the hell are they going to film A Feast for Crows? It's appalling. I'm half way through and nothing has happened.

Read the books first, the only problem I have with the TV series is that it doesn't explain some of the background information (mainly Rob's rebellion) well. It can make certain things confusing.

Also, you get into each of the characters heads and makes you love them more.

To me the 2nd Book was all about Tyrion. That means a fark load of scenes with Peter Dinklage. That means it is mathmatically impossible for this to suck.

Still, everyone needs to tune in so HBO will pick up an adaptation for Storm of Swords, which will be epic.

Season 1 bluray (and possibly the dvd) has chock full of background info and history of the seven kingdoms. Highly recommend.

Jamie and Catelyn have a couple scenes, then he is sent off with Brienne of Tarth at the very end.

It'd be neat to watch this with someone who doesn't know what is going to happen. You could explain background stuff to them if need be, and you get to watch someone react to the mindfarking as it happens.

I can vouch for that. I've read all the novels and watched it with my GF who wasn't familiar with them at all.

*SPOILER*

It was great watching her face when they executed Ned Stark. Also when they turned Tyrion into a puppy so he could go spy on Cersei and Jaimie.

I don't understand people who say GRMM loves rape. His Song of Fire and Ice series is tame compared to say, Terry Goodkind. Now that dude had his rape face on every time he wrote.

Same. I also have a circle of friends who love the show, but refuse to read the books. I appreciate the enthusiasm but constantly seeing social network updates reading "Winter is Coming" gets silly.

Yep. I'd say if you're not knee deep by the end of epsiode 4, you've tried hard enough and can stop watching without guilt. Nothing super OMG epic happens, yet if you CARE about the characters, you'll know why I said try through that episode.

Yes, but that's right around when those characters will die and you'll have to try to learn about new ones.

It's really not too tricky if you watch the first two episodes. They jam in so much "Ahh, John, brother of Fred" to establish who is who that it's almost parody.

It's far, far easier to follow than, say, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
