Your Dad's a dick. Or was.

He was an old school farmer from a long line of old school farmers. It was what he knew. He told me the outcome and I apparently disbelieved it so he followed through as I didn't hold up my end of the bargain. He had beef cattle and hogs and had no need, and no time, for a dairy cow. He told me that the cow was going to go.
So, in farmer thought... that's meat in the freezer.

Yep, shooting it is just stupid. Waste of money.ihatedumbpeople: Hmmm...I didn't get the impression that he went looking for attention.

HE POSTED A VIDEO ON YOU TUBE.

How the Hell is that 'not looking for attention'? If he wanted to remain anonymous and still send the video message to his daughter, there are other ways that don't involve the interwebs...

So anyone who has ever posted anything on youtube is looking for attention? It's not like he sent it out to media outlets. His daughter wrote a letter about how bad her parents/life were and posted it on facebook. He made a rebuttal video and posted it on her facebook page so the same people would see the followup.

He's a grown man acting out with a firearm because he feels threatened by what a bunch of Junior High Schoolers are saying about him on Facebook.

It's got nothing to do with discipline and everything to do with wanting to look like a badass to a bunch of teenaged girls.

Life on the farm is different than growing up in the city. When I was 8 or 9, I accidentally ran over our dog with the pickup while taking the old man lunch in the field. It broke her back, but she was still very much alive. I got her off the road and went and told him. His response was "Well, the .22 is behind the seat. You ran over her, you take care of it.". I had to go back, get out the gun, put it between her eyes as she looked up at me with confused, pleading eyes, and pull the trigger. Then I loaded her body in the pickup and drove home. I also had to routinely "euthanize" baby pigs that weren't going to survive. That usually involved a hammer, and I'll spare you the details. I have many more, but the dog was probably the worst and definitely the hardest.

Mom didn't find out he actually made me shoot the dog until many years later. She was not at all impressed.

THIS.

Seriously, if you're so incapable of handling children that you shoot their things when they don't obey RIGHT THIS SECOND!!!111!!1!, you might want to go forwarn CPS that you've got only a few months before you start abusing them.

/Really, this is the entire mentality behind abuse: You Are Mine, You Are Not Obeying Me, Ergo I Punish You.
//A normal parent is the one who doesn't feel the need to not only break into locked FB posts, but shoot things because their teenager whined on FB.

I think you mean a "typical" parent.

"Normal" seems to imply good parenting is involved. A parent that allows their child to use FB AT ALL is NOT a good parent.

"Typical" parents have no control, and are completely and entirely at the whim of their children. "Normal" (i.e. "good") parents are just about the opposite.

Yes a "normal" parent would not allow their children to use FB at all and alienate them from their entire age demographic and peer group. Jesus you know part of being a kid is learning how things work in society right?

I think FB is a lot more of a gray area in parenting than shooting a laptop. One is actually a sign of violence. The other, unless you can provide evidence otherwise, really doesn't do more than let kids sound stupid online, which quite frankly they'll do one way or the other anyway.

You missed at least one common group of parentage: the absolutly psychotic abusive parents.

When I was growing up, the happy kids were rare. The bullies were common, and their targets were common. Happy parents were rare, but abusive parents were common.

The ones who have no control are ambivalent.

The good parents are keenly aware.

The remainder are abusive, and they are the most common.

I'd know, I lived that farking life. My parents loved me, my bullies did not. I would sooner shoot somebody like you in self-defense than proclaim that everything is just grand and fine in the world and there's no problems and everyone gets along all of the time.

Imaging hard drives is difficult??

It's not that it's difficult. But unless you put it into another laptop that's roughly 90% compatible hardware-wise, you will have to reinstall the OS, drivers, and all your programs anyway.
So whether he just imaged it or copied off the documents, it wouldn't matter. The only things that are left are the documents.

However... That was a colossal waste of a good chunk of hardware. He should have sold it on eBay and bought a new gun.

I doubt he could have got more than $200 for it. It was an old laptop, why do you think she wanted a new one?

I spent a few childhood summers on my Aunts farm in W Va. At 9 ys old I was told we were having goat chili for dinner, then instructed to go out and catch a kid goat, then handed a knife to slit its throat, which I did. The next time I was allowed to use a 22. I get it.

Still, you have to forgive a 10 year old if cause and effect is not fully understood, and killing her pets is farked up.

/Sad story about the dog though. I was in a car that ran over a dog in similar fashion and the dog had to be put down.

durbnpoisn: Does the new format allow for all the setup processes for all your software, as well as specific driver information? I kinda can't imagine it making much of a difference even if it did, unless (again), the hardware in the new machine is almost identical.

These days you can take the drive out of one machine and stick it into another with completely different hardware and Windows will proceed to grab all the needed drivers off the internet. About the only thing you need to do is activate again. Try it sometime, you'll be surprised.

Why not wipe all her files and donate it to charity? Destroying it is just wasteful, but if you donate it she suffers the same result, she loses her laptop. And I am sure that there is a school or a senior home somewhere that could use an extra laptop. Hell, for added kick put a "Donated by ____________" sticker on it and donate it to her school!

What do you think is fake? The dad's outrage, the gun, the bullets, the laptop, etc...?

2012-03-07 06:24:17 PM
ZydrateZombie: Really... you vastly over-estimate the worth of a run of the mill laptop. Like... VASTLY. And you're also so damned DENSE that you missed the point of my post.

Nope, any return is better than a loss, so selling the laptop is better than shooting it up, plus adding the cost of his apparently solid gold bullets... I got the point of your post, life sucks. On the other hand, you missed the point of mine: this dude's a moron. He "taught his daughter a lesson" by destroying something HE paid for...

ZydrateZombie: I'm damned certain that my cow, my rabbits, and my horse were of much more value to me than that laptop was to that girl.

All this ire over an inanimate piece of junk. Priorities in modern society are skewed as hell.

...... I was in the barnyard when the processor came to shoot, hang, bleed, and gut my cow prior to hauling the carcass to be butchered (Not arranged out of any sort of callousness. I was just unlucky enough to be home when the guy could come.) I was at the auction when my rabbits were sold and the person that bought my mare later sold her to someone else that damned near starved her to death.
So, again... I have no sympathy for that girl or that laptop.

I don't care about the laptop, I just think the guy's a moron, there's a difference. He's a typical dipshiat who wants to appear "tough", when in reality he doesn't impress me in the least.

And yeah I get it, you miss your barnyard friends, life sucks that way, we all have crappy stuff happen, sometimes it's our fault, sometimes it isn't, but if I went around basing whether or not people had it hard based purely on my experiences, there wouldn't be much sympathy to be heard from me, since I watched my mother beaten to death by her boyfriend at 5, was the only eyewitness and out the guy in jail 6 months later, got adopted by an aunt and uncle who treated me like garbage, beat me from one end of the house to the other, ended up in 3 hospital psych wards and a Children's Home before someone figured out something was wrong, and then spent my 4 years of High School between a Group Home and a Foster Home.

See, we all had shiat in our lives, but I still have th capacity to think that it would have been horrible to see your animals go like that.

/Just by calling the guy a dumbass, it doesn't mean that I'm feeling sorry for his daughter.

Driving at 8 wasn't a big deal back then, and even now farm kids start pretty young. I was in the field on a tractor full time, often 12-14 hours a day, when I was 9, on an old cabless 720 John Deere with a hand clutch and no brakes. I'm kind of surprised I lived to be an adult, and that tractor did come very close to killing me at least twice. As far as the dog though, even the old man now admits that it was a dick move.

As for your other question, to my knowledge neither of my brothers are chainsaw-wielding maniacs.

Mikey1969: ZydrateZombie: Really... you vastly over-estimate the worth of a run of the mill laptop. Like...

And yeah I get it, you miss your barnyard friends, life sucks that way, we all have crappy stuff happen, sometimes it's our fault, sometimes it isn't, but if I went around basing whether or not people had it hard based purely on my experiences, there wouldn't be much sympathy to be heard from me, since I watched my mother beaten to death by her boyfriend at 5, was the only eyewitness and out the guy in jail 6 months later, got adopted by an aunt and uncle who treated me like garbage, beat me from one end of the house to the other, ended up in 3 hospital psych wards and a Children's Home bef ...

Well, your life experience speaks volumes as to the reason why you happen to interpret this father's actions as being a show of aggression or toughness, when they really weren't.

That can work, I just lock down outbound internet access from my daughters MAC address so she can still type up papers for school. If she figures out how to spoof a MAC, then she's earned a bit of surfing.

Spoofing a MAC is easy as hell to do. Windows provides the means in Device Manager.

You know that, I know that.. she's 13 and not technical. Never mind I set up her Id as a reg user. I'm the local Admin. She comes to me for software installs.
Also she only connects via wireless... so mac filter would stop her from going anywhere if she spoofs it anyway.

I finally watched that video for the first time recently. Between the guy claiming he was a highschool student/college student/firefighter at 15 and his nonsense about "exploding hollowpoints," (to say nothing of filming himself shooting a computer) I dismissed him as an attention whore.

He also claimed to be an IT expert who cleverly got into his daughter's account, then later admitted that he only saw her rant because of access through another shared account that she forgot to block.

I don't care if the girl is in the right or in the wrong. Her daddy's a buffoon.

Goodfella: That kind of makes me lose some respect for him.

"I'd have wiped it and sold it

to someone in another city"

You meant to tell me you would not have discharged a firearm in a rural neighborhood where cars are rolling by less than a hundred yards downrange, but instead would have carried out a sensible solution that still would have appropriately demonstrated to the daughter that she was an idiot?

That my be very well and good, but that does NOT get you youtube fame and an interview on the Today Show.

Good day, sir!

I SAID GOOD DAY!

Since he keeps showing up in the news, I think you're on to something.
