If you are talking Maher giving to Obama, that's easy: Link (new window)

Rush is a farkwit, but so is Maher. They both cross lines, just Rush goes way further.

Two of those are about the same issue (breastfeeding in public) and Maher and that isn't misogyny at all. The first link in which Maher called a vapid blonde talking head on Fox News a "twink" is also not misogyny. He's not attacking the woman for being a woman, he's attacking her for being dumb. Since when is "twink" a gender-based slur? His attacks on Palin are in poor taste with his use of words and I could see them being correctly labeled misogynistic. He could have attacked her for any number of reasons, but there's no reason to call her a slut. The c*nt attack, though, I'm actually OK with because I think that's similar to calling a guy a cockbag or something similar. He's not calling her a name there because she's a woman, only because she's a dangerous, ignorant, self-righteous person who wants to curtail the freedom of others and divide the nation for her own ends - and she happens to be a woman.

Mugato: If you're pissed about Stewart being too leftist, tell your right wing masters to stop being so Goddamned stupid and easy comedy fodder.

You may not know it, but you have struck the heart of the matter.

Right-wing public figures are typically venal, stupid people. As a result, it's child's play to make fun of them. Left-wing public figures tend to be more reserved and smart. In order to make fun of them, you have to start making shiat up, then attach it to them. That's how Fluke ends up a "slut" and Obama ends up a "socialist muslin". The right-wing hate machine HAS to make this stuff up because they have nothing else to go on. Fluke was a lucid, intelligent woman making a compelling case when she spoke before Congress. How do contradict that?

"Slut! Whore!"

This is why Jon Stewart is genuinely funny and Rush Limbaugh is genuinely not.

I can think of no better description for their response to Rush's comments.

The one part of this article that was news to me was that Bain owned Clear Channel (which syndicates Rush's show).

That DOES sort of make it a bit of a different game.

Those on the right screaming "Bill Maher" would have a more potent argument if Obama somehow owned part of HBO. I've always thought Romney's response was weaksauce, but now it's clear that it's actually financially invested weaksauce - he stands to lose money if he criticizes Rush, so he doesn't. Very upstanding and presidential of you there, Mitt.

I have Rush on again today- my station is, again, WIBA in Madison. I was able to cost Rush a local sponsor yesterday (one reason I'm going to the well again today), which he shrugs off as part of his opening segment. He HASN'T lost 28 sponsors. They're not all national sponsors. Local sponsors don't count, unless you're taking grand total.

He figures 30 advertisers per station, times 600 stations, means he has 18,000 advertisers. The 28 he's lost is nothing.

Well, hopefully I can help him lose a whole lot of nothing.

I'll be keeping track of today's advertisers again.

In fact, he's got three NEW national sponsors, which he won't announce yet, but one of the Penny Arcaders has unearthed one of them as SeekingArrangement.com, which I think advertises here too. It's that 'sugar daddies' ad.

This is funnier than most wing-nut spin. Hopefully Rush will be as insignificant to the Republican party as Maher is to the Democratic soon. Probably not, even though it is a clear case of libel, but one can hope.

I don't think there has been so much concerted effort to push Bill Maher into the spotlight since Politically Incorrect got cancelled after 9/11.

I have literally seen or heard his name dragged into this debate 50 times in the last 24 hours.

That's only because both sides are bad.

How about you stop calling women sluts and whores regardless of their sexual proclivities, ok?

/you can keep prostitutes. But only when they actually engage in sexual activity for money.

Prostitute is a much broader of a term than just selling your body. Most of politics is about brokering your principles for power/influence/wealth which is a quite real and a more dangerous form of prostitution in my mind.

2012-03-07 12:47:15 PM

CitizenTed: How do contradict that?

"Slut! Whore!"

The funniest part is how people try to defend Rush's points on their face value: "if the taxpayer is paying for her to have sex, why isn't it being a prostitute?" It's the classic double-bullshiat method of arguing, where you throw out two increasingly stupid statements. People seem to accept the many, many levels of idiotic assumptions behind the statement that the taxpayer is paying a lot because she has a lot of sex in their rush to say that calling her a slut is totally out of line.

Which sponsor? Who are his local sponsors in Madison? I e-mailed WIBA and told them I wouldn't listen as long as they carried Rush, but I'd like to know who's sponsoring him locally so I can not give them any money, either.

2012-03-07 12:48:05 PM

InmanRoshi: It's pretty funny how they're framing this as though Rush's repugnance was merely limited to the poor choice of words using the word "slut". It reminds me of rednecks who believe telling a racist joke is perfectly within the acceptable margins as long as you don't use a racial slur.

See, that's the thing. I'm pretty sure I've heard Jon Stewart call a male politician of some kind a "dick", which is basically the equivalent of Maher calling Palin a "twat" or "coont" or whatever he said. The thing is, they're basic expressions of dislike, rather than an actual argument - which Rush was trying to make - that Fluke was, in a literal or figurative sense, a "whore".

THAT is the primary difference between the comments by Maher and Rush. Their respective influence doesn't even come into it.

All this comparing Rush to Maher is freaking hilarious. I usually compare him to Jerome, he's this guy that preaches insanity on the street corner, he's an ex-convict and junkie as well. The only difference between the two is that Jerome doesn't get paid huge amounts of money to shout his insanity at people.

Maher is a stand up comedian that happens to have his own show on HBO.

The one that dropped him was BodyFit Solutions, who just started advertising this week and didn't know their ad was going to be on Rush. (I would take that tack with any local sponsor. They very well may not know their ad is going to be on during Rush; they only know it'll be on the radio station.)

At common law, certain "unpleasant opinions" - e.g., asserting that a woman is unchaste - are libelous per se. Other "unpleasant opinions" - e.g., asserting that Rush Limbaugh is a hillbilly heroin junkie with an insatiable appetite for Dominican rentboys - are, at worst, libelous per quod.

Rush gets outrage from the masses, Maher does not. The people enraged are supposed to be not interested WHO it is about. They are claiming that the language itself is the issue. The links I posted weren't conservatives, they were liberals.

For what? Misogyny? These are all female and are all pre March 2012.

I guess it's ok since it's ok with you.

I would never say something like that. As a former Republican (I was raised that way, I only woke up about 12 years ago while I was in college and saw the world for what it was) I'm still working to properly calibrate my misogyny/racism detectors. But I don't see how making fun of an idiot (Kelly) and registering discomfort in public breastfeeding regester as misogyny. If you could help me out on that one - rather than reply with mindless snark doesn't address my points - I would greatly appreciate it.

SVR.

When Democrats criticize Maher, they do not later apologize to him for it.

PC LOAD LETTER: derp

Rush is the leader of the Republican Party. None of the people you mentioned are leaders of the Democratic party.

AkaDad: It's not misogyny when you call a coont a coont.

Is it misogyny if you're too much of an asshole to realize calling a woman a coont is misogynistic?

The whole sputtering "b-b-b-but Bill Maher...!" from the right wing reminds me of the exact same "b-b-b-but Dan Rather...!" stupidity whenever Fox News puts out blatantly false propaganda.

What the morons fail to grasp is that Dan Rather (and his producers) all lost their freakin' jobs because of their unverified news reporting. BIll Maher lost his freakin' job because of his loose lip.

Both "sides' may be bad but it seems clear that only one "side" is interested in getting the bad apples out of their barrel. The other "side" seems uninterested in removing their rotten fruit, preferring instead to merely point out that the other guy's barrel has also contained bad apples at various points in history.
