this movie should be a requirement before viewing other movies. between this and the maltese falcon, you pretty much have every movie reference taken care of.

If you haven't seen Casablanca on a big screen with an appreciative audience you've really missed something special.

WB did that a lot - in fact, Mel Brooks did it in Blazing Saddles for that reason.

I love it when people throw navy beans when Bogey says the line about the problems of three people not amounting to a "hill of beans". That, and when the audience yells "SLUT!" everytime Ilsa appears on screen.

/Audience participation *MAKES* that movie.

Laszlo reveals he is aware of Rick's love for Ilsa and tries to persuade him to use the letters to take her to safety. When the police arrest Laszlo on a minor, trumped-up charge, Rick convinces Renault to release him by promising to set him up for a much more serious crime: possession of the letters of transit. To allay Renault's suspicions, Rick explains he and Ilsa will be leaving for America.

When Renault tries to arrest Laszlo as arranged, Rick forces him at gunpoint to assist in their escape. At the last moment, Rick makes Ilsa board the plane to Lisbon with her husband, telling her she would regret it if she stayed, "Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life."

Major Strasser, tipped off by Renault, drives up alone. Rick shoots Strasser when he tries to intervene. When his men arrive, Renault pauses, then tells them to "round up the usual suspects." Once they are alone, Renault suggests to Rick that they join the Free French at Brazzaville as they walk away into the fog.

Events like these are why I am such a large supporter of the Digital Projection, this would not happen with film, I wonder if it will be possible in the future for theaters to have a "Retro Night" once a month just to show these remastered classics on the big screen.

Would have been nice of them to include a list of the theaters that will be screening this.

quatchi: If you haven't seen Casablanca on a big screen with an appreciative audience you've really missed something special.

The local movie theater, which has been around since before Casablanca was released for the first time, did a Valentine's Day screening of it. Since it's my wife's favorite movie anyway, that was sort of a no-brainer for me. Seeing it on a BIG depression-era screen was something very special though

TCM a couple years ago showed the original cut of the move back-to-back with the more familiar cut that the studio released. The longer version is astounding and explains a lot of loose endings from the studio cut. I've been trying to find a copy ever since.

Yeah, I'm lazy. But how hard would it have been for the author to include a link? I went and looked and the closest showing is in Orlando FL. I live 5 hrs away in North Florida (please don't hate, it really is rather nice here). I guess I'll have to live with projecting it myself in my garage. Then I can drink booze and chain smoke just like Bogey.

The Wiki article has some background for you. The version shown to the guys overseas has all the stuff that was cut, I guess they figured soldiers could handle a few references to homosexuality, porn, and drugs. Too bad they cut out Carmen's nude scene, I'm sure the guys would have LOVED that.

Yeah I never got that from WB. Why play a part of "As Time Goes By"? They actually had a pretty decent fanfare music (you'd catch it on some of their VHS tapes in the 80s).

It's great to see older movies on the big screen rather than a tv screen. It just adds something to the experience. I saw Jaws on the big screen a couple of years ago and it was an awesome experience.
