Crashing the economy actually caused gas prices to plummet ('cause, you know, people were hoarding what little cash they had left), which is why Republicans can claim that "gas prices went up 200% under Obama" even though it's still under the highest mark it was under Bush.

The most convincing argument I've heard for the gas price bubble in 2007-2008 was that 1) speculators were making a "macro" bet that the growth in India and China means greater demand for gas in the long term, and 2) the deflation of the housing bubble was driving speculators to put their money in the next big thing, which was going to be energy. The insurgency in Iraq can't have helped though.
