snuggling with kittens is a fundamental right.

So?

Lampooning terrorists AND bucking the sacred American Normal Rockwell art style.

Now that's some funny farking shiat.

Enchanting, the subtle symbolism of 21st century blind idealism oh-so-cleverly interwoven with paint & canvas.

I wish I had a kitten.

Having a grandfather who was a famous painter means instead of displaying your crap art at the swap meet, you get it featured on CNN.

Then I thought it must be porn.

Wow, everything about these paintings is horrible. It's a good thing grandpa is dead or he'd be sooo disappoint.

Seriously.

Norman Rockwell was an amazing artist. I visited a Norman Rockwell museum once and the detail and realism in his paintings is nothing short of amazing. I appreciate the sentiment, and there's nothing wrong with not wanting to ape your grandpa's style, but skill-wise the paintings featured in TFA.... meh. I've seen better stuff by lame high school kids.

"We are supposed to think that those who wish America ill are motivated by evil and to not think any further than that," says Rockwell. "(But America) has spent quite a bit of time meddling in the affairs of other countries. Whether we like it or not, there are plenty of reasons out there for people to wish us ill as a country."

Grandad would approve.

2012-03-05 10:26:04 PM
These are poorly composed paintings with pretentious narratives.

In the modern art/museum/fine art mode of art you always find the most naive, un-nuanced liberal political narratives. Maybe because people who actually have something creative & interesting to say politically do it in mediums where people actually pay attention.

2012-03-05 10:27:29 PM
OK, right, next, we'll, uh, we'll... paint terrorists, but with cute little kittahs!
Then, uh, OK, uh, I know, we'll paint trees, but make them look like they're made of stone and metal!
Allright, next, next, we'll... we'll paint movie and TV stars and fashion models, but make them hideously ugly!
OK, after that, lessee... oh, I know! Kids on a playground, but make them all look really old!

I suppose this "ironic combination" stuff is just too deep for me to truly comprehend.

I'm just not seeing anything really noteworthy in her work. *shrug*

Just not my thing I guess. I don't dislike it, but it feels contrived and doesn't evoke much of anything else.

Why would you need to know anything about art? I don't know anything about rock or country except that I like rock a lot more. If I knew everything in the world there is to know about country, I still wouldn't like listening to it. Isn't that kind of the point? I'm not a bit ashamed that I don't know anything about abstract art, but i'm sure i'm not near as great as you are either.

You know, Rockwell wasn't always considered nostalgic Americana. In his time, he could get very edgy.

I do believe dear chap if you look back into the past history of the revolt in the thirteen colonies you'll find quite a few terrorists there-in who are now celebrated in popular art, ie:

So she didn't even make up the idea for the painting, conceptualize something and then create it....... she just painted a picture - of an already existing picture. That's even shiattier than I thought.

In other news George Washington traveled to England and blew up British buildings and ox carts in order to instill terror in the minds of the citizenry.

I can't respect this:

Pollock 8 (new window)

or this

leelouzworld.files.wordpress.com

within the same order of magnitude as:

Birth of Venus (new window)

or

wiki.arcetri.astro.it

or even

www.guy-sports.com

You can pour your heart and soul into abstractions, but they convey little and less. Good art should evoke a response that cuts through barriers of language and culture and even time itself. Abstract art has trouble mustering support from people who know the guy who did it.

It's always funny when a child or grandchild attempts to profit via the talent and notoriety of their parent/grandparent. GW, Arlo Guthrie, and now Rockwell's granddaughter. Look at you! Your grandparents was talented and notable! And he happened to fark some woman, whose kid happened to fark some woman, and now you're here, so that means you're talented and noteworthy too! Or something

No, no, you've got it backwards. It's the terrorists smuggling the kittens so they can use them as suicide bombers.
