Lionel Mandrake: I never get tired of listening to non-Californians talk about how lefty the state is.

Study some history. It's not that left and it's only recently (in political terms) reliably Democratic in national elections.

Mostly because the Republicans in the state went apeshiat.

Thank you for clarifying this. I live in Orange County and the people here are farking high off their ass on the FOX brand koolade. All you need to do to find your right wing enclaves is drive 30 minutes south of LA or head up the 5 into the San Joaquin valley. And lets not forget that CA deposed Gray Davis for pretty much nothing. The ratio of conservatives to liberals in this state are very close to 50/50 but the R's (read: yokels) don't show up for national elections.

So, what are food trucks?

2012-03-05 03:29:49 AM
Farking moron. If you want to fight childhood obesity then require the food trucks to be moving at all time and require the kids to chase after them to get their food.

2012-03-05 03:31:15 AM
Let them sell outside of schools. Just mandate that the trucks can't stop moving.

The dumb-ass shiat people in this state--my state--come up with is stunning sometimes.

I am not trolling. Food trucks have long been a vector for criminal organizations to distribute drugs and weapons, take illegal bets, buy/sell stolen merchandise, loan shark, etc.... Ask anyone who has worked in industrial areas about these dudes. Sure there are well meaning entrepreneurs but this just invites all sorts of criminal behavior. And really I have no problem with food trucks and whatever nefarious shenanigans they may or may not be up to as long as it is between consenting adults. These are kids.

Let me put it another way. Gangs are desperate to get drugs and weapons into schools. Having dudes hanging out outside of schoolyards does not work anymore. Solution. Have a mobile front to supply the bad ass kiddies with the wares of the criminal trade. Sh*t goes down? Well those trucks are long gone and the evidence disappears.

I don't like the way cafeterias are run either but at least if there is a problem they aren't going anywhere and can be locked down for an investigation. There is also some accountability. With random food trucks skulking around you never know what the f*ck is going on.

This law probably has nothing to do with what I'm talking about but to me I see many pitfalls of having these vehicles hanging out around schoolyards.

Don't call me a f*cking troll (at least not for this). This is common bloody sense.

pxlboy: lohphat: WhyteRaven74: The restaurant owners whine about unfair competition, even if their restaurant is next door to another, it's the food trucks that are bad competition.

But the place next door has similar cost overhead, the vans don't.

And are often tastier. We have a taco truck down the street that serves a burrito the size of a newborn child.

/om nom nom nom

That WAS a newborn child, you nitwit. The taco is over there on the counter.

And I see the kid's mother coming, you'd better start running.

We've got so many authoritarian progressives in this state who get their way with so little effort that they have to work JUST THIS hard to keep coming up with more asinine laws.

Next step is to ban all convenience stores or restaurants within 1500 feet that might compete with school lunch sales. Them's lost revenue!

A fully equipped food truck can sell for somewhere in the neighborhood of $75k. More if you get a well designed high quality graphic wrap. It's a mobile kitchen so there are regulations about food safety and health dept. inspections. In many places, the truck has to be parked overnight in an approved, inspected lot. Parking at a commissary can run around $3k a month. Then there's insurance, business licenses, etc. The overhead ain't cheap.

However, I will say that back in the 70's/80's quite a few Ice Cream trucks also had an unadvertised adult menu.

Yeah, that's actually the very first time I've ever heard about any of that. And it seems pretty... paranoid. Granted, I'm not putting it past the realm of possibility, but I'm not going to instantly believe every food truck in the world is really a front for the Crypts and the Bloods or something.

And please knock it off with the throwing political accusations around, just because someone doesn't agree with you or think the same way you do doesn't mean they're "the enemy". "If you're not with us, then you're against us" is a really stupid ideal to live by.

2012-03-05 04:27:27 AM
I'm not against them being forced to stay away from schools. But too far away is definitely a issue.

I don't know where the pot dispensaries issue even enters the formula. There's no specific reason why they should be any limit to where they are located. They do not sell to children, even if they happened to have a card. You need id and they only sell to people above the age of 18 in fact.

[i20.photobucket.com image 640x380]

Not what I would have imagined.

Well, they're well-established here, and many have permanent spots to vend. In many cases, it's a van that rolls around to wherever it can, opening the canopy to sell to whoever might want a meal, like at construction sites, concerts and such. In my experience, though, each cart or truck has a specific location they're licensed to set up. It's different from city to city. At the specific location in the photo I posted, there are about twenty of them, each offering something different: burgers, pizza, Thai, Czech, Vietnamese, Polish, etc. The food is generally pretty freaking good.

Lawmaker: Food Trucks Should be Farther From Schools Than Marijuana Dispensaries

I really hate to say this, but if the whole idea is the "ZOMG SCHOOL KIDS ON POT BUT NO FRIES AND GRAVY!" angle, then go pound some farking sand. If he'd said "pharmacies", would that have helped? 'Cause kids are just as likely to get prescription narcotics as they are to get prescription marijuana. As in, not without armed robbery.

Oh no wait. I just checked the article (shock, I know) and it turns out he seems to not be quoted saying anything of the sort. What he actually said was that food trucks should be 1500 feet from schools. The article then goes on to independently note that "pot stores" must be 600 feet from schools. This, by the way, is posted in "Home > News > Stories". Not "Home > Op-Eds > Whiny biatches Who Don't Understand Why Sometimes One Thing Gets Proposed But Not Something Else Because Sometimes They're Dealt With Separately And Sometimes Access Is Already Restricted By Law Making It Irrelevant", if you were curious.

The paper then goes on to make the totally logical proposition that unless he simultaneously proposes that pot dispensaries be moved an equal or greater distance away, he is saying one should be farther than the other.

That way, they can make the scary-sounding claim that if a lawmaker wants to move food trucks, he'd somehow rather have kids "on pot" or have weed be "nearer" kids (even if it's in a dispensary where they can't get at it unless they have a legit prescription, in which case, so what?)

See, journalism, this is why you like to think of yourself as the safeguard of democracy. It's why you're actually a load of stupid shiat. Retarded scare tactics and absolute nonsense like this. Can't you just carp about why you disagree with the food truck proposal in an op-ed instead of using official journalism columns with scare headlines like a bunch of babyish biatches? You know, like you're supposed to do, but don't -- and given that your most prestigious award is named for the raging asshole of yellow journalism, likely never have?

Actually, food trucks are a serious business to a lot of people. They ain't the "roach coach" of yore.

2012-03-05 04:45:37 AM

lohphat: There is something to be said for fairness.

Established businesses have to pay facilities costs and property taxes and deal with health code inspections. These trucks do not since they may travel between counties.

I'm all for competition and a free market but that also requires a level playing field.

Let's count how many things are wrong with this. I'l start with questioning what is a level playing field and who gets to decide.

2012-03-05 04:45:37 AM
Why don't they just make a rule that the students can't leave campus during school hours? How hard it that? Seemed to work well the whole time I was in school.

I didnt say "equal" I said "level".

For the same reasons we don't allow 12 year olds to play and compete tackle football against 18 year olds, or why there are weight classifications in boxing: reasonably fair competition is realized when certain qualifications are required by the partcipants to compete. Regardless of the quality or popularity of the product, food carts and trucks have a lower overhead than stationary establishments.

For the same reason allowing tshirt vendors to occupy otherwise public property to set up shop next to a clothes outlet would unfairly compete with it, the solution is established areas for such low-evel commerce. We call them flea markets or swap meets so that similar cost structures can compete.

In San Francisco 1500 feet from schools would pretty much be an outright ban on all food trucks in the city. Nobody here cares about pot dispensaries being near schools you need a prescription ID and have to be over 18 to get in. The Bill is stupid kids aren't lining up to buy Martabak for $6 after school if they have a couple of bucks they're going to a market and buying chips & soda.

So next time i need drugs or weapons I just need to find the nearest food cart. Good to know.

Can they score me hookers too? I typically consult the taxi drivers for that but seeing as they are increasingly ultra religious I need a new broker.

Phoenix_M: Tarkus: Makes sense to me, pot dispensaries won't sell to kids.

They will if they have a card.

Now, that would be up to the kids doctor, now wouldn't it?

i had never heard of this food truck crime epidemic either. i think it's a paranoid fantasy or troll etc. anyway isn't the banning being proposed primarily for nutritional reasons?

a bit of searching on google turned up one article about a truck that got busted with drugs in nyc in 2007, and another yelp review where someone anecdotally mentioned a truck that did this 'back in the day in alabama where they grew up'..

i'm sure it happens from time to time but probably with not substantially different frequency than any other 'fronty' business like liquor stores, bodegas and the like.

in SF the trucks mostly just seem to be trying to see who can be the most organic and locally sourced.

the only danger i've ever seen was when i casually ordered the 'hot' version of the chicken tiki masala burrito from 'curry up now'. i generally eat a lot of very spicy food and have higher-than-usual tolerance for such things but that melted my face off!!!!!. tasty tho.

lohphat: But the place next door has similar cost overhead, the vans don't.

So? Also, the vans tend to sell less, so their revenues are smaller.
