Sad way to start the day. Goodnight mister first to fire Sammy Hagar.

He'd been battling it for years and towards the end he refused to let the cancer define his life anymore.

Godspeed on your bad mooterscooter Ronnie.

That's how I took it as well.

Very sad.

That was my take too. The whole "he chose his own exit the way he chose his own life."

If he chose to go on his own terms, I respect his decision. Seeing my brother and a friend's mother battle cancer was pretty horrible.

Or he could have decided he just didn't want to be poked, prodded, or take treatment anymore as it would have been a gesture of futility.

Either way...RIP Mr. Montrose, thanks for all the great music you leave behind.

Holy crap, I knew him back in the 80s.
He gave me some FX, and a tuning amp that I still have.
Nice guy.

This is sad.

With all that we've accomplished, scientifically, and with all the money that has been poured into this, I remain amazed we can't cure this farkin' disease. Lost my uncle to this way before his time should have been up.

Fark you, cancer. I hope you get yourself and die.

I have had TF off and on over the years I have been on the site. One thing that never ceases to amaze me is the quickness with which Farkers create hilarious headlines within minutes of the news breaking. I figure now, if I have read it and it's not one minute old, a Farker already has a headline in the queue about it.

The mortality rate of cancer is about exactly what it was 50 years ago.

Aggressive prostate cancer account for more cancer deaths than all other cancers but lung cancer.

/Research released in May 2007, found that US war veterans who had been exposed to Agent Orange had a 48% increased risk of prostate cancer recurrence following surgery.

Perhaps he can form a new band with Dio now.

That's my frustration with this-we seem to have made strides with some forms of cancer but not prostate cancer.

Man, this totally bums me out. My favorite late jam with the band back in the day was a rousing rendition of "I've Got The Fire". And I always loved Hagar's work with him - it just fit perfectly.

Also loved his work with Edgar Winter's White Trash.

/Keep playin' that rock n' roll, guitar man. RIP.

Ronnie was one hell of a nice guy by all accounts. I'm sorry to say that I never got to see him perform in any of his incarnations, but one thing that really impressed me about him is he set out to never make the same album twice, which you really can't say about a lot of performers.

2012-03-04 09:49:05 PM
That Montrose album was a touchstone of my teens. I remember burning my fingers on a hash pipe while listening to it... didn't want to spill my Jack Daniels on the upholstery of my El Camino. Kids, you may think old people suck, but the '70s were farkin' great!

Sad news. "Rock Candy" was given due reverential treatment in the stoner comedy "The Stoned Age". The Montrose album was so full of rockin' win.

2012-03-05 12:21:25 AM
Best track Montrose ever recorded, IMO, was on the Guitar Speak compilation -- Blood Alley 152.

That also had a Leslie West track on it, as well as Eric Johnson's Western Flyer.

/rock on, Ronnie.

He was a very nice man. I lived in Marin County for most of my life and when he would play at New Georges he always let some of us come back stage to meet him and sign our tickets. Then when I moved to the Midwest, I contacted him on Ronnieland (Before it closed down) and he actually answered me and helped me with the guitar lead on Voyager. Without realizing it ,you can hear his guitar work all the time. It is amazing how many songs he played on. He will be missed.
