And of course, had she been raped and murdered on her walk home, having missed her train, the NYPD would NOT be complicit in causing her death.

I agree, not ALL cops SUCK...and the NYPD has always been good to me, but, they shouldn't be robots. Why is there no "subjectivity" in law enforcement?

Yes. I would hit it.

No. Didn't submit it.

We're supposed to make exceptions to rules for cute white girls.

So it's like this: keep your feet off of the furniture, if you please. If you don't please, then pay the city $50.

GAT_00: There's no way there isn't more to this story.

Maybe, maybe not. It's a $50 summons for a routine violation. Could just be that the cops didn't feel like being lenient, or they had a quota or something. Or, if you want to be more conspiratorial, ticketing a few white woman gives more defense if they're ticketing black or Latino people more often.

Cops have quotas, and we are the ones that fill them.

"I asked them if they had bigger fish to fry," she recalled. "The police officer said, 'Yeah, but we're frying this one now.' "

Love em or hate em, that is the perfect comeback.

What's so hard about not putting your shoes on the same things that you sit on? Also subby, 'cute' is pushing it with this one.

I thought it was common knowledge that NYC cops are hardasses about stuff like this.

In the criminal justice system, seat obstruction based offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious crimes are members of a elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit. These are their stories.

"Seat obstruction" could be a very interesting euphemism for anal rape

I prefer the most reasonable explanation. Cops tend to be power hungry jackasses and get off on pissing people off by writing tickets for trivial crap.

Cute chick on the subway? I can beat that. I saw a hot chick in a PT cruiser the outher day?!?

Are there any euphemisms for anal rape that aren't interesting?

Another example of the 99% of a-hole cops giving the 1% of good cops a bad name.

Break the rules and and or law, get caught.
Whine about how you are special or think the rule doesn't apply to you because of some BS excuse.
Vow to fight against this outrage, wasting far more time and effort than it is worth.
That is genius!

Normally I hate the jackasses who do that (or put their shopping bags on empty seats) but an injury should be an exception.

/And if she's cute, she can sit on me.

2012-03-03 09:52:58 PM
So, that photo is a recreation of the crime, which was in itself a crime?

2012-03-03 09:53:10 PM
Cute if you're into an unshaven, smelly, liberal with square glasses trying to give false features to a dough face

2012-03-03 09:53:36 PM

Why are these transit cops never on the full trains or buses when people have their bags taking up seats people could be sitting in?

Although I can understand where they're coming from. She shouldn't be putting her dirty shoes on the seat and if her leg was feeling that bad she could have caught a cab.

God, New York is so metro! I wish my local newspaper carried hard-hitting journalism like this!

$50 for "resisting arrest" eh?

BULLshiat. She got a ticket for occupying more than one seat. Resisting arrest is not going away for $50.

Kinda hipsterish with that hair and glasses

GAT_00: There's no way there isn't more to this story.

Here's more: the rest of us don't want to sit on the crud off your jogging shoes, princess.

I'm on the side of the lady resting her shopping bags on a seat and the fat guy who allows his butt to migrate a bit on an empty car but shoes? The rest of us got in trouble for that in first grade and learned from it. $50 is cheap to learn the lesson so late in life. Be glad you didn't get the adult version of detention and move on.

Ok, yup, she's a cute chick.

JerseyTim: We're supposed to make exceptions to rules for cute white girls.

I think it's coz she's a brunette. Or, hell, maybe she's a biatch and, like her very recent ex-boyfriend, the cops got sick of her shiat.

"There were empty seats all around the whole car,"

Uh, I though that rule was universally about keeping the seats clean so that people can sit on them without farking their clothes up, rather than about how many seats you take up.

2012-03-03 10:01:12 PM
The car was sprinkled with about five straphangers, she said, when three cops told her to step off the train at the 36th St. station, just one stop from her home.

Straph-angers?
Stra-phangers?

This word makes me SO phangry.

Obstructing seating? Really New York? What about a businessman putting his briefcase on the empty seat next to him? Is that obstructing seating? Don't you have bigger crimes going on? Like people dancing in bars without a cabaret license? GASP!

If this woman went missing and appeared on the news, we'd be all, fark-meme("missing white girl"), but since that instantiation failed, we cut back to fark-meme("white knight the cute ones") and fark-meme("pigs pigs pigs").

If this was either EBM or his 50 yo opponent, would the Daily News/SF Gate/East Bay Express have even written about it?

Every day - and I mean every day - the ability for any American citizen to see most police officers as little more than laughably ineffectual Keystone cops and bullies far more concerned with revenue generation (as here) than they are with actually solving or preventing real crimes gets harder and harder.

Couple that with their simultaneous uptick in brutality, harassment and employment of military tactics and we're really only a few years from when truck-bombing of police stations (as happens in much of the rest of the world) becomes a semi regular occurrence..

10 years ago this would have been an outrage.

Today, I really don't think the average citizen is going to be too upset about it, especially when more and more people are suffering the indignity of police interaction, and those interactions - with pitifully rare exception - are overwhelmingly bad.

Cops have been sowing a lot of ill will in the last 10 years or so, I'd hate to be them when the time comes to reap it.

White people problems, such an injustice.

here is a much better article, albeit in her own words (new window)

and to the moronmitter, the photo of the female in running clothes sitting on the subway seat is of a Daily News reporter, it is not a photo of the actual incident, nor of the person in question.

That's right! She should have known better! She should have sat on the floor with her injured leg extended, so that she wouldn't have gotten her shoes on the furniture! I mean, come on! I put my butt on those seats!

The rule of thumb is: You can reason with one cop, but as soon as the second one shows up, take your ticket 'cause they're gonna try to out-hardass each other. You're only gonna add a beat-down from then on.

Odds are one of them said "Get your feet down ma'am" and she mouthed off at them. Seen that type of crap a lot. Doesn't matter if the cop is making a goofy / dumb request. Doesn't matter if you're right; if you screw with an asshole's authoritah, he'll use it.
