We've already had two SSwarns here, and dozens of cells lining up.

This is one of the nastiest situations I have seen in years.

You're right; from the FAQ:

What platform do you run all this on?

The software is all homebrew stuff, written in-house in mod_perl and back-ended by MySQL, all running on about a dozen FreeBSD boxes. It was cobbled together as a quick hack, which then evolved over the years into an even bigger hack. There are other systems out there with more/better stuff, but, hey, we like being unique. :)

The hardware is co-located at Blueone.net here in Lexington, Kentucky. (We have a webcam on it, but the lights are usually off...) Offsite backup is co-located at Bluegrass.net in Louisville, Kentucky. They're both very cool ISP's.

I did see that from the radar. Somewhere between Huntsville and Ardmore. Harvest and New Market might have just disappeared.

They rarely hit the mark with sending the on-air talent to 'dangerous' places. Lexington is probably the safe spot; radar doesn't show anything coming at it right now.

Accuweather is comparing this to the 1974 Super Outbreak, lots of coverage there. I remember that one too. Me and the other kids in the hood, throwing golf-ball-sized hail at each other ;0

I seem to recall that Alabama had a TOR:CON of 9 during the tornado outbreak that included that massive Joplin Tornado. Going merely by memory (which is admittedly unreliable), today's forecast might actually be generally worse. It seems like there are a lot more places over a wide area with very high numbers.

Commentary from last night seemed to suggest that much of the bad weather in the central KY area would likely end up popping out of nowhere. And we're not due for bad weather for a few more hours now.

Two different outbreaks. Joplin was in May and more isolated in nature. The massive Alabama & SE outbreak was in late April and Forbes did go with a TOR:CON of 10 because it was set up to rival the great outbreaks. And it did. Not sure if this one will be quite in that league.

Oh c'mon, that's gotta be hyperbole. A couple dozen would be bad enough.

Is it really looking that bad already?

I'm hearing schools here are actually letting out early on the weather predictions, something I usually only see happen when there's the threat of snow (seemingly ANY snow, to the amusement of someone who moved here from the North-East...). Going to be an interesting afternoon... If anything hits, I'll have a good view from my office building here downtown...

Not trying to be casual about it. Was just going on what I'm looking at now: http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/full_loop.php Agreed, this stuff can and probably will pop up on the back side.

re: 1974, that event changed a lot of people's attitudes about tornadoes; I insist on having a place with a basement now, and even my old crusty dad will run downstairs when the sirens go off. The Xenia tornado was not that many miles up the road from our place; just the luck of the draw if it doesn't hit ya.

Lol I live in Laurel county,Ky and from the storm I saw the other day I'm not that farking worried. This apartment has yet to lose electricity during a bad storm,it only flickered once and that was during hail. Watch me post this and the city of London get demolished knowing my luck though.

GAT_00: Nrn Alabama tornado hit at least one school and a jail, as well as numerous houses. Reports of cars flipped with people inside them as well.

Watching coverage from Huntsville TV right now. School's fine, took out part of the roof and some other stuff. All the kids ok.

The 'Jail' is actually Limestone correctional facility, a huge state prison with about 2500 inmates. Apparently it got smacked pretty good. They're reporting injuries, but it sounds like the main areas got missed with most of the destruction being secondary structures.

No reported deaths yet, but it is awful early in the day.
