Hospital officials said they were "very sorry for any pain and distress".

Ha. Typical British reaction.
"Sorry we set you on fire old chap. Pip pip! It all worked out in the end though. Shall we go for tea?"

In the U.S. the article would have read "Hospital officials have not returned calls to CBS News and have instead directed us to speak to their lawyers".

Exactly.

And before anybody starts ranting about socialized medicine, this happens in the U.S. too.

Happened to a woman in Florida this past December (new window).

There are a lot of other examples of this happening, but I'm not going to list them all.

Huh, when I read the headline I thought, "anesthesia accident."

But nope, alcohol swab.

Go figure.

Having just had surgery this morning, I am glad that I am unaware of any issues with personal smoldering.

this usually happens when the drapes become saturated with oxygen, and ignite due to a laser being used during surgery.

Flammable means the material (or liquid) will burn, inflammable means the off-gases will. ie, Gas doesn't burn, the fumes floating off of it does.

At worst I could be wrong, at best I grossly simplified the explanation, although I'm sure some farker will correct me.

this usually happens when the leeches aren't enough to draw out the evil spirits or the gnome won't leave the pit of the stomach despite vigorous chanting of the appropriate rites and the drapes become saturated with miasma and Satan's dark will ignites the phlogiston

If it happened in the U.S., the patient would also be billed for the "spontaneous cauterizing service" they received.

This is because we, in Britain, are polite and accept responsibility* for our errors and failings rather than try to displace them.

In other words, after they put out the fire somebody said, "What the fark just happened?"

Oh right, this happened in the UK. "Pardon me, chaps, but you have any idea what the bollocks caused this poor gentleman to combust?"

Does anybody know why this is such a common thing? I mean, what the hell? Those rooms are freezing cold, so I know they aren't roasting marshmallows over a fireplace or something.

I just had surgery (achilles tendon repair) in November.

Kind of wish they had torched me up a bit. Probably could have gotten them to pick up my deductable.

Is is possible that, by inhaling other people's farts all day long, my own farts will smell more?

No, inhaled farts would go into the lungs rather than into the digestive system, and would simply be exhaled again, although it might be possible that some of the fart components might be absorbed into the blood. If you wanted to benefit from other people's farts in the way you describe, you would have to swallow them somehow.

my dear dear estonian granpa went in for bowel surgery before he passed away.

apparently the doctor accidentally nailed a pocket of gas while working with the cauterizing tool.

they also accidentally sewed his ass shut, but that's a story for another day.

zaier: Does anybody know why this is such a common thing? I mean, what the hell? Those rooms are freezing cold, so I know they aren't roasting marshmallows over a fireplace or something.

It happens most often when electrosurgical devices, such as a cauterizing tool, are being used. In the link I provided earlier, the woman was getting some cysts removed from her head. She was wearing an oxygen mask and the surgeon was using a cauterization tool to stop bleeding. Not only did he get too close to the oxygen source, but apparently there were pockets of trapped oxygen near the woman's face as well due to the surgical drapes not being properly applied.

P.S. I'm actually not creepy in real life. Mostly. However, when people play games with social knowledge in the face of their friends they play with fire. Honesty works. Read that thrice.

P.P.S. I respect honesty and straight-shooting, and that's how I roll. Societal-norms aside, truth works and lies assuage. Mind knows the diff, no?

So based on your experience, is it ok to fart while being feltched or not?
