Eh?

They're analysts roundtables are often like that, especially when Milbury is involved. Add in a dick like Roenick and it's going to happen. It would have been better if they added Nick Kypreos.

2012-03-01 10:11:04 AM
Milbury versus JR?

Gotta take JR on that one and what would be extra fantastic is to see Milbury on Satellite Hotstove on CBC the following Saturday with a huge shiner.

FTA: But, then, with NBC Sports ratings in a nosedive, maybe some animosity is what the network needs-if only to get people talking about it.

Wait, you mean people didn't tune in to that BC-UVM blowout a couple of weeks ago on a Friday night??

\if for nothing else, just to hear Milbury refer to a lame penalty turned into a 5 minute major "the wussification of hockey"
\\was housesitting, nothing else good on, what do you want?

Heard this this morning on T&R.

Hilarious.

Roenick acting tough? Was Chelios off camera?

That Shirley Temple blast was quite funny as well.

That was a surprisingly good game and it was interesting to hear everyone disagree about rather that was a suspendable play or not. I personally agree with the two minute penalty but don't think anything further should come from it. Of course the NHL has the final word and I've been pretty impressed with the explanation Shanahan has been giving in the Player Safety (new window) videos on NHL.com. A clear, concise explanation (even if you don't agree with it) is better than a one sentence press release that doesn't explain anything.

Jeez, Milbury vs Roenick. I'm cheering for meteor.

// if Milbury knew anything about hockey he'd still be a coach
// Roenick's right; he'd knew something about hits to the head, ne?

One of those guys on his own is too much. Together, they are unwatchable. Then again, I never watch intermissions or pre-game shows or the like. Pointless babble. And sometimes, as in the case of these two clowns, blatant ploys for attention and ratings.

And now I feel like a tool for caring enough to weigh in.

2012-03-01 10:59:13 AM
One great coach, one great player: but two total idiots when they get in front of a microphone.

Seriously, for our non-hockey readers, this is kinda like Craig James fighting Matt Millen.

RsquaredW: Jeez, Milbury vs Roenick. I'm cheering for meteor.

Agreed, it's impossible to pick a side here because they're equally loathsome and stupid.

2012-03-01 11:04:49 AM
Why the fark are Deadspin videos never able to be played at work?!?! Just a still picture, no option to play.

On a side note, I was expecting JR to start crying as he did when the Hawks won the cup because he's never hoisted one.

Quite possibly the two biggest assholes in North America. Put those two and Don Cherry in a rocket and fire it into the sun.

I don't think he got the head, but I'd still give a game suspension. If you have to go soft when you see a player turned towards the boards is in a vulnerable position, you have to go soft when you see a player is in a vulnerable position because he's reaching.

Meh, fighting will be gone from hockey within the next generation. USA Hockey and Hockey Canada are banning it, so it will eventually be weeded out of the younger players coming up.

Were they talking about the Perron hit? I can't view the video either, plus I watched the Blues game on local broadcast and didn't care about the NBC game.

I was really suprised Perron came back: his neck looked wonky from the second he was hit (assuming this is the hit in question).

/nice to see them on top in the Central
//NBC should be televising tonight's Blues/Canucks game

I was at the game and didn't think it was even worthy of a 2min minor. Letang extended to get the puck, Nystrom connected with Letang's chest and shoulder, NOT his head.

FriarReb98: FTA: But, then, with NBC Sports ratings in a nosedive, maybe some animosity is what the network needs-if only to get people talking about it.

And, nothing against hockey as a sport, but, you can't buy a network whose main assets are hockey, cycling, and outdoors shows, and then complain you aren't getting boffo ratings. And then, your most high profile addition over the next few months will be soccer.

Whether people want to admit it or not... all NBC Sports Network has right now is programming that, at most, 1-2% of the total population really wants to watch at any one time. That doesn't mean it is "bad"... it just isn't widely popular.... whether it be NHL games, MLS games, non-top tier college basketball/football games, random non-top tier MMA fights, etc.

Although, if you follow the link to the article talking about that topic.... they have basically pulled the shows some people expected on the network (mostly the outdoors shows, and some other pre-taped shows) and replaced them with "high quality" programming like documentaries and Bob Costas interview shows... and the ratings are down from last year (January 12 vs 11).

You know I've gone from being annoyed at Shanaban for being so harsh to being annoyed when he misses one, especially when it is a shot to the head. I'm a Blues fan and the number of concussions and "concussion like symptoms" experienced this year is ridiculous.

I do have to ask if there has just been an unusual number of them this year or in previous years they just continued to play on anyway.

One is an idiot and the other is stuck in an infinite loop.

Blatant embellishment anyway, his chin might have been grazed by the elbow pad at most...shouldn't be leaning in like that in a high collision area. Don't be a pussy and try to feather the puck ahead in the corner when you know a fore-check is coming. Cover up, protect yourself and the puck, strong play to move it out.

"Could" have been charging...not worthy at all of a suspension though. 2 minutes at most, but even I would say that was a stretch.

Slaves2Darkness: I do have to ask if there has just been an unusual number of them this year or in previous years they just continued to play on anyway.

When you severely loosen the parameters of what constitutes a concussion, you will see a rise in cases. Just another case of the NHL putting kids mittens on all the watered-down talent that feels the need to skate everywhere with their head down, or in Letang's case, willing put themselves in jeopardy instead of protecting themselves.

--------

It used to be, "Hey, you see Nystrom bearing down on you, forget the puck a sec and brace for the hit."

Now it's, "Hey, you see Nystrom bearing down on you, he needs to slow up and stop and let you make whatever play you want unmolested."

And I'm sorry, all these newjack, Mighty Duck movie loving post lockout Crosby & Ovechkin pink hat fans who disagree can suck my shiat. That's how the game was played for almost a hundred years. If you don't like it, go watch women's hockey. If you play pro, you might get concussed. You might get farked up. To try to eliminate these from the game is useless. It comes with the territory. You can reduce the retarded, premeditated James Wisniewski dumbshiat. But these plays? Stop trying to make the NHL a squirt league. These are big boys who should have brains and talent enough to protect themselves. The Letang hit is a classic example this year of a player making a stupid choice/risky play and willfully putting himself in a compromising position. But that's Nystrom's fault, "he's headhunting". GTFO pink hats.

I'd like to see Ray Ferraro roughed up by a former GM.

I'd pay good money to see Ray Ferraro fight Bob Clarke.

We all win no matter who gets the sh*t beat out of them.

James Duthie at TSN said once that when Milbury worked at TSN they used to get him to shut-up by listing off his most infamous trades. Duthie said Mike would go off and pout giving the rest of the hockey panel 30 minutes of peace.

Didn't look like a penalty at all. Shoulder to forearm and chest. Boards were irrelevant, no one ever made contact.

Fighting is on its way out of hockey in the next decade. The junior leagues will be banning it this coming summer. The NHL should also expand the size of the ice to reduce the number of severe concussion causing hits.

The NHL will be better off when its best and most bankable athletes aren't being erased by concussions.

Would be great. Players are much bigger/faster than they were back in the 30's and 40's when the ice size was set.

Somebody didn't read the study that found the majority of concussions are caused by legal hits to the body Link (new window)

Should head hunting be outlawed? Of course, nobody here ever objected to that, but when over 40% of concussions are caused by clean, legal hits to the body I don't see how you are going to eliminate them. Hockey is a collision sport, injuries are going to happen. Oh, expanding the rinks may, MAY, reduce hit related injuries, but it'll ruin the game. Sportsnet broadcast Swedish Elite League games during the lockout, it was unwatchable garbage.

germ78: Fighting is on its way out of hockey in the next decade.

Start with making fighting an automatic 10 and game misconduct...make players really think before goading a fight just because they're sore about a previous hit in the game, or "want to lift their team's spirit" (one of the dumbest reasons to risk your face getting pounded in, ever).

I don't mind fighting at all, but at least 70% of the fights I see, and the "rationale" behind them that I can interpret, are petty or downright asinine.

2012-03-01 01:04:49 PM
Expanding the rink could also give a chance to get more speed going into your hit. Keep your head up, son!

germ78: The NHL should also expand the size of the ice to reduce the number of severe concussion causing hits.

Isn't the size of a regulation NHL rink basically how many arena's set up their floor space though and seating (since the hockey rink dimensions were about the largest thing they'd have on the floor... vs basketball, and then indoor football/lax/soccer/etc all basically use the same size floor as regulation hockey)... Ie.... even if the NHL wanted to extend the ice 10-15 feet in each direction.... 75% of the arena's might not be able to accommodate that easily, without taking out a whole row or two of (possibly) permanent seats.
