Okey get the artifical dyes, perservatives and High Frutose Corn Syrup. Artificial Sweetners and all the JUNK out of the processed foods and then we will talk. Blaming kids for being fat and then making all the foods that they eat pure GARBAGE is laughable. You think im kidding? Let s look at soda... HFCS and water... it doesnt satisfy the sweet tooth thats why you can drink 64oz. Do the same with a Mexican coke and some people cant finish more then one of them. It is now how MUCH you eat it is WHAT you eat. If it fills a bodies need you will no longer be hungry.

Empty food= Empty calories= Fat storage

Get it right people

The exercise component... STOP trapping your kids inside playing HELLocopter parent. Let your kids roam the neighborhood. Stop stressing your kids out after afterschool this and that. Turn off the TV and do something with your kids.

Im making changes and they made the WORLD of difference.

I'm cool with them closing this, if only because it did kind of vilify and denigrate fat kids. Anyone with half a brain knows for very obvious reasons why that's not going to solve the problem. For many of those kids, it simply isn't their fault by virtue of the parents giving them too much bad food and not encouraging active lifestyles and hobbies.

However, in much the same way that we terrify kids about the dangers of smoking, we need to terrify them about the dangers of morbid obesity, sedentary lifestyles, and poor eating habits. You need to get them young, before they feel as though it's too late to change, of which many fat adults have convinced themselves.

CapnPlaty:
Very true. I live in Ohio, and the number of fat people riding in Rascals at WalMart is astounding. What's scary is the number of available riding carts can go from 6 to zero depending on the time of your visit, not including those who bring their own ride.[...]

As I read this, it suddenly occurred to me that WalMart and similar places ought to have a variation of those carts for people like me to use. Instead of a battery-operated motor, though, it'd have pedals with a low gear ratio so you have to pedal hard to get around the store, and maybe a little battery-charger circuit so I can charge my cellphone while I pedal around and a flywheel to keep the charger going during short stops. They could even include a larger battery that gets used to recharge the motorized handicapped-and/or-lazy scooters when I'm done.

Sigh. Seriously?

If shaming/teasing/bullying was an effective weight loss tool, there wouldn't be any fat people.

How about instead of focusing on weight and size, we shift the focus to health? Becoming healthier is worth pursuing for everyone regardless of their size. Most people would feel better with less processed foods and more physical activity in their lives, so let's promote that instead.

/Currently fat and healthy. Excellent blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose levels, etc. Exercises regularly and can run 2+ miles comfortably. Eats healthy; but has a big appetite.
/Used to be not fat and healthy. That was fine too, except I was hungry all the time.

I thought that too and then I lived in Asia for a few years. Maybe the shaming only works when everyone else is thin and it is your own parents calling you fat and telling you to eat less.

All it did was tell kids that they should eat right. What's wrong with that? It's the same mentality that when Michelle Obama suggested that kids should be taught better health habits, people had this reflexive reaction that she was telling their kids they were fat. Well maybe they should be told that.

This is such a difficult thing to tackle. On the one hand, yeah, we are facing an epidemic and many, many, MANY kids are out of shape up to morbidly obese due to sh*tty diet, exercise and habits. On the other hand, I know a lot of people with kids who just are fat by nature. Somewhere in the middle is my friend's kid. This kid was a chubby little bastard at 8 months old. I could just tell "Yup, he's gonna be a fatty". My friend is a pretty tall and skinny guy. His son is bordering on "look at fatty over there". Thing is, this kid is WICKED athletic (does 2 sports as opposed to my kid hating doing anything outside), eats a ton of vegetables ... but he's still pretty damn fat. Now, his mom is kind of a chunky chick (not fat, but she's battled weight a lot over her life), so this kid is predisposed to being fat, I just can tell. Now, I won't state emphatically that the kid has a great diet because he doesn't, but he doesn't eat any more junk and/or fast food ass what I consider an average kid his age, and he really does get tons of exercise and like I said, loves vegetables boarding on the insane. My kid eats the same stuff but doesn't get much exercise at all no matter how much we push him,and he's underweight! In fact, we're trying to fatten him up, since he's so tall. So in a lot of cases, I admit, I tend to lean a bit too forgiving, knowing that some kids tend to start down that fat path due to the hand dealt them in the womb. Of course, when the road is paved with Twikies and soda, the kid is f*cked and he's gonna be a tub of sh*t by the time he's 12.

You see any fat people in that shiny future? No. Sure, some people say it's thanks to open laws and government heroine. But I think we all realize the real reason. Exercise, or any kind of physical activity, has decreased over the years, and our perception of what a normal portion of food is has increased tremendously. That's the deadly one-two punch causing obesity.

Eating grilled chicken is good.

Eating an entire grilled chicken... not so much.

I am a fat man.
It has taken me half my life to understand my body and understand how to lose weight.
I have lost 60lbs and hope to lose another 60 this year.
Having said that, FAT IS NOT HEALTHY. IT IS NOT NORMAL.
I cant even tell you how much better I feel since I started exercising and lost the weight.
I move better.
I can go up stairs with out huffing.
I can buy normal sized clothes.
I sleep better. My apnea is all but gone.
Every aspect of my life is improved, including my sex life.
If you are unable to move around under your own power that is not normal. Its not healthy.
You should be embarrassed and ashamed.
This group should be ashamed that they are trying to make Fat normal.

Track what you eat every day. Be honest with your self. You will be surprised how many calories you really eating.
Ho-ho's are not calorie free.
You need to exercise. Start slow. 15 minutes on the elliptical can change your life.
This guy was my example.

My wife and I bought a Wii Fit a few years ago. It hurt to get on and have it say "That's Obese!"
But we knew it to be true. I could only imagine how some people felt having an anthropomorphic game device calling them "obese!"

I've sucked it up and and shed 75 lbs, and will be running my first marathon in a couple of months.

My wife is working on it. Has lost 40 lbs so far.

I've been to EPCOT. Disney in general has some of the most grotesque, morbidly obese specimens I've seen in my life. And they're not all American. In fact when I do hear them speak to order another $20 waffle cone, they're mostly European. Shame on EPCOT for caving into those fat farks.

Diogenes: OK. Let's drop the stereotyping and show them the real deal. Kids giving themselves insulin shots. Kids having to get a gastric bypass. Kids needing heart surgery at 16.

I think it wasn't negative enough.

Ugh, the insulin shot remark really irks me. The kids giving themselves shots are the ones with Type 1 Diabetes, not the fatty-induced type 2 that results from diet.

My healthy-weight daughter is type 1 and has to do daily shots, it has nothing to do with weight or diet, it's autoimmune. Kids like her have enough to deal with, without people being led to believe they, or their parents, caused the disease.

The other type 1 kid at her school is skinny as a rail, and does the daily injections too. They really should have named the fatty version of the disease something completely different instead of just branding it as "Type 2." For those who have type 1, its frustrating having to deal with people who think it was caused by too much soda or eating at McDonald's, and my daughter doesn't deserve to be lumped in with the lazy, unhealthy people who typically end up with type 2.

Anyways, the fatties on scooters irk the hell out of me at Disney as well. On trip boards, its common to hear about people being injured or having very close calls due to fatties using the scooters as motorized ramming-rods. They act like the crowds should magically part for them to get through, and the drivers seem to be the most self-centered jerks around. Personally, I've had to push my kids out of the path of motorized psychopaths three times in our two trips down there.
