This article reads like satire. And the fact that the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance is actually a real organization is satire bordering on tragedy.

2012-03-01 08:18:53 AM
Let me get this straight.

If you don't eat right, and don't exercise you'll get fat. But making a display that shows people not eating right and not exercising as fat is a stigma?

That's like saying it's discrimination to show a smoker getting cancer. "Here's to Disney's reinforcing society's most hateful negative smoking stereotyping."

If you don't like the stigma of being an obese cow, don't be an obese cow! Where the hell has personal responsibility gone?

2012-03-01 09:09:02 AM
Seriously, it's probably the best thing they could possibly do. Show these kids that being a fat fark WILL get you stigmatized. Show them that they shouldn't hit the Disney grand resorts buffet three times a day and have ice cream between visits or you'll be the object of scorn and ridicule.

I have three kids and we don't talk about not being fat but DO talk about how important the food and drink choices they make are. I say we start a Fark theme park where fat kids and sharp knees are called out for what they are - a BLIGHT!

2012-03-01 09:22:35 AM
OK. Let's drop the stereotyping and show them the real deal. Kids giving themselves insulin shots. Kids having to get a gastric bypass. Kids needing heart surgery at 16.

I think it wasn't negative enough.

2012-03-01 09:25:14 AM
For some reason I pictured this thing as a child sized habitrail what wasn't quite big enough, which would have been a little unfortunate. It turns out it's an area that encourages children to engage in a healthy lifestyle.

Why does Disney hate America?

There are actual medical conditions that can result in being over-weight. And we should be sympathetic to these people.
A six pack of boston creams and a 72 oz soda is not a medical condition. And we...

We were just down there a couple of weeks ago, and I didn't think it was bad. I think it was in one of the Innovention areas? I was too busy jumping up and down on the door slammer to get over several hundred thousand.

This from a company whose brand icon is a potbellied mouse.

"Housed inside Innoventions, the park's futuristic showcase of ideas, Habit Heroes features animated fitness buffs Will Power and Callie Stenics, who take groups of up to 12 guests through interactive rooms, where they fight bad habits such as too much television and junk food."

Maybe they closed it for being an incredibly stupid idea. Seriously, does that sound like fun to anyone?

"We're appalled to learn that Disney, a traditional hallmark of childhood happiness and joy, has fallen under the shadow of negativity and discrimination," came a heated response from the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance.

I accept your fat, and reserve the right to point out it's terribly unhealthy.

I'm still struggling with the existence of a "National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance" - are we really so polarized that even the terminally chubby need their own organization? And why are we "accepting" fat anyway?? Hasn't medical science shown conclusively enough that fat is generally bad?
I guess they had a fat blockage to the brain and couldn't think of that.

/have children
//none are as chubby as me, thank goodness
///and i take responsibility for my own fat--i don't need your organization to do it for me.

I tend to think I'm just being cynical when I think that doctors, either consciously or deep down, want people to be unhealthy. Then a post like this comes along, and I realize I'm also being logical.

For the love of Christ.

I've been to EPCOT. Disney in general has some of the most grotesque, morbidly obese specimens I've seen in my life. And they're not all American. In fact when I do hear them speak to order another $20 waffle cone, they're mostly European. Shame on EPCOT for caving into those fat farks.

Jesus. I am a fattie... Land whale I am sure you would all say... But I still support anything that will help kids realize that this way of life sucks. I go up and down in size, struggling to lose weight. I know ultimately it is all on me to fix it. Just giving up and demanding acceptance seems insane to me. There is no need to be cruel to fat people, but just saying it is aok is just wrong.

Technically, yes, it is. Unfortunately we as a culture have for some reason latched onto this meme that social pressure is inherently problematic: that a society which expects things of people is fundamentally broken. This is one of the consequences of that.

Denial denial denial.

How can people take a positive and characterize it as ridicule or discrimination? Someone close to me was OFFENDED when the doctor told her she was obese. Don't get offended, get going.

I don't get it.

I'm fat. I know it. It's my fault.

This was true 2 months ago: I spend 4+ hours a day watching TV, and I work in an office. I have a dog that I don't walk (a lob nonetheless, so he's INSANE). I eat huge portions of food just because I can afford to, and I drink 4 to 6 dark beers a day (stouts or porters mostly).

I have lost over 50 lbs in the last 2 months. How? I stopped drinking. Started walking the dog. Got a standing desk at work. Quit watching TV so much and went back to my old hobbies: hiking, playing music, gardening, and lifting weights. I changed my eating habits, and only include meat in dinner now. I have a smoothie for breakfast that's mostly vegetables like spinach, carrots, and celery, with just a tiny amount of fruit for flavor (typically 3 blackberries or 8 blueberries). I have carrots, celery, and cucumber for lunch. I eat whatever the hell I please for dinner (to avoid LOSING MY MIND eating all the health food LOL).

I have lost six inches off my waist and dropped two t-shirt sizes.

I'm still fat, but getting better. And, it's all my fault. I gained the weight due to a shiatty lifestyle, and now I'm losing it due to a decent lifestyle. I'm actually happier too.

Then ASSHATS like this "obesity club" (or whatever they're calling themselves) that are too fat, lazy, and stupid to get off the couch and DO something about their lifestyle spend so much time and energy crying and screaming about how fat people have "bad genetics" or "poor metabolisms" etc etc etc. There is a teeny, tiny, smidgen of the population that is fat because of genetic predisposition. The VAST majority of fat people, ESPECIALLY fat children, are fat because they are lazy and have irresponsible lifestyles.

/OK I'm done being serious.

[progresscityusa.com image 490x193]

Futuristic shiny city on a hill? Nah, we're going with "don't get fat" now.

The future is Wall-e. It was sent back though time to show us that we don't need to do anything, ever, and it will all work out fine. After it was released, Epcot had to change it's focus a little to what could be, not what will.
