Mija: When even God calls you an abomination you cannot partake in the body and blood of the Savior

Funny Jesus never turned any sinners away. Also if you want to go the Leviticus route, we'll be here a long while listing all the stuff that's said to be equally bad to a man laying with a man, which by the way comes with it's own context the narrows exactly what it means.

Like I give a shiat about opinions on sexuality from a virgin. I'm amazed anyone gives a damn what a priest thinks about sex. They've missed out on the primary motivation of our society. What marriage/family advice could they possibly give?

You are correct that the priest followed the letter of the law. The spirit, maybe not so much.

I have to admit, she put it very very well.

How so? They're both saying that their version of God is going to be torturing the other one in Hell.
That... is probably not a good argument to have when someone just had a funeral.

But hey, in another 100 years who knows what crazy new "context" we'll see in these old religious books?
"If you look closely at Obscure 1:23, you'll see that Jesus turned away the man because he was genetically engineered to have 3 eyes. Jesus had no problem with the genetically engineered themselves, only the third eye which is approaching God's territory".

sounds like he acted inappropriately in terms of the funeral arrangements. Refusing communion isn't something new though and some Catholic churches, southern ones especially, do give the admonishment at times. My wife was insulted when they did it at our friend's wedding in Memphis because she thought it was done and phrased in a way to seem intentionally exclusionary. Catholic clergy ain't nothing if it isn't heavy handed

And he didn't exactly like religious institutions very much or think much of organized religion. Given what the church in Rome did to Gnostics, Cathars, Jan Huss and others, mentioning that is not really well received by the church.

Rapmaster2000: Like I give a shiat about opinions on sexuality from a virgin.

Jesus never said a word about sexuality. Also, I wouldn't bet on him being a virgin. As for what Paul wrote, he did mention sex, but not sexuality. It wouldn't have occurred to him since 2,000 years ago sexuality as we understand wasn't an existing concept.

Religions are not buffets where you get to pick and choose which parts you want and which you don't. Your choices are obedience, schism, or heresy. Heretics don't get the magic cookies.

I know reading is hard for some people, but if you want to tell other people about what the old Book really means, you can learn more about it by reading a few more paragraphs. It's what we call context. The sin in Romans 1 isn't homosexuality; the sin is denying one's love for God. The book says (see below) that the mostly unspecified "shameful acts" are a result of that sin, not the sin itself. Arguably the "shameful" part of it has nothing to do with sexual orientation, but with raw lust, materialism, and denial of love.

Not that I buy into any of it, it's just an old book of myths as far as I'm concerned. But I have actually read it, unlike most of the people who haven't read anything more than the cherry-picked quotes that their Sunday school teacher made them read.

Romans 1:21 through 1:31

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator-who is forever praised. Amen.

26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy.

But most Christians aren't interested in reading a whole four paragraphs, it's hard, and anyway:

Livingroom: WhyteRaven74: Livingroom: whether it's gay men or gay women, the point the bible is making: homosexuality is strictly forbidde

It doesn't forbid homosexuality, because it couldn't. In the Greek of Paul's day there was no word to encompass all homosexuals. Hell in Paul's day they didn't even have our view of homosexuality. And if you pay attention In Romans Paul is talking about pagan religious practices, and as it turns out, part of religious practices for some Romans as ritualistic gay sex.

oh my god the denial. it's plain as day: no men + men and no women + women sex. it's forbidden. dont do it or you'll spend eternity in a hell and the lake of fire. WHY DO YOU PEOPLE NOT JUST ACCEPT IT?

AS the resident anti-anti-Religionist let me just say:

That priest done farked up. Wrong, wrong, wrong wrong:

I"n my years as a priest, I have encountered many pastoral situations and know that kindness to those experiencing personal loss is a necessary part of the Church's call to charity," said the letter, signed by Rev. Barry Knestout of the archdiocese. "The fact that you did not experience this is a cause of great concern and personal regret to me. It is understandable that you and your family would expect the funeral of your mother to be a time of fond remembrance of her life and comfort from the Church in the midst of family grief."

The letter apologized for the "lack of pastoral sensitivity."

Guarnizo's behavior was against the Archdiocese of Washington's policy, according to a statement issued by officials.

"When questions arise about whether or not an individual should present themselves for communion, it is not the policy of the Archdiocese of Washington to publicly reprimand the person," the statement said. "Any issues regarding the suitability of an individual to receive communion should be addressed by the priest with that person in a private, pastoral setting."

I'm going to suspend my normal skepticism at the one sided local press and suggest that the priest needs a kick in the farking nads.

Well God damnit, is this some new, shocking thing that the Roman Catholic church doesn't like homosexuals? What the fark? I'm more shocked/surprised that people are shocked/surprised that the denied communion.

"hey guys, the sky is blue"
"ok, the sky is blue"
...10 years later
"GUYS THE SKY IS BLUE HOLY shiat THIS IS SO NEW TO ME"

Call the church a pack of dicks, assholes, or what have you, but damn- their beliefs on this particular subject are not new, and shouldn't surprise anyone except a select group of crybabies.

I was talking about the priest. It doesn't really matter what Jesus says since we're all hacking together our own personal interpretation of what he really wanted based on our subculture, pop culture, and societal mores. In 200 years I wouldn't be surprised if Jesus is depicted as having a blonde flat-top like Johnny Unitas.

I don't think it is so much the communion, but rather the other bullshiat he pulled. He treated them like shiat from the get go, didn't allow the daughter's eulogy, then when he caves he walks out on it, then leaves the church in the middle of the funeral and refuses to go to the grave site...

Worst part about that sort of thing is that the Jews wouldn't have done it that way anyways.

It took a full court of judges in the Temple itself to pass a death sentence. And any court that did that more than once every 70 years was considered bloody.

If a priest was to follow the letter of the law as laid out in Leviticus, anyone who ate pork, shellfish, wore clothes of mix fibers, any man who slept in the same bed as his wife while she was on her period and a whole host of others, wouldn't be eligible for communion. It's in Leviticus that a man laying with a man, as he lays with a woman, is abomination. And priests don't really ever care about the law in Leviticus.

True. Not liking the religion has become a serious problem for the Catholic Church. They dialed it back with Vatican II and they still couldn't keep people in the seats.

They need to amp up the excitement to appeal to today's youth. That's why I've got my own church with snake handling, lasers, and blackjack. The kids love it.
