They got records for both employees and customers. Maybe they conspired to sneak out a few different pieces at a time, under the pretense of it being a mis-pack, RMA, or defective item.

Then the dastardly criminal ring would then repackage their FrankenTromsö and sell it on the black market.

Brilliant.

I'm now imagining the "Swedish background check" to be something that makes a dutch rudder look like a sunday school activity.

Ha. I once went to the complaint counter in an Ikea store because a corner on some goofy bookshelf I bought was chipped. The clerk wanted to see my ID. I was perplexed and wanted to know why, but she insisted. I told her, in a graphic way, to perform various sex acts on members of her family and went on my way.

I have since thought of taking a dump in an (unconnected) toilet in one of their sample bathrooms, but nobody I know is willing to help me pull it off.

It wasn't people complaining about a few missing screws they were checking out. It was people suing them and employees they probably suspected of theft or embezzlement. I'm hardly surprised.

If it comes out that this was a form of union-busting or something, I'll be very disappointed. I rather like Ikea :/

Ikea sells crap. We just got one of these soul-sucking stores in Denver and the GF loves the place. What a bunch of junk. The 30 Rock episode about the place was funny cause it was true.

It's not fancy or anything but if were junk how could it survive a half-dozen moves like some of the stuff I own?

Maybe you just aren't good at putting things together.

I am perfectly fine with all of this. In the US it's a common practice to check out our employees and people who are suing us.

Really amazed they are so surprised this happens.

Not everyone lives in a dorm or moves every six months. Real furniture doesn't require assembly.

These jerks should go to prison! They should have to build the prison out of IKEA desks and bunk-beds first.

What's the big deal?

If the information they're looking at is a matter of public record and they just hired a firm to collect and organize it for them, which is what appears happened FTFA, it's certainly not illegal here and I'm having a hard time seeing why it would be in France.

Given the number of dossiers and the number of customers and staff they must have in France, this is not something they're doing to customers who have an issue with a chip in a piece of furniture.

Yes it does. Its just that "real furniture" get assembled by someone making minimum wage (or less, depending on the sweatshop they work in), and IKEA furniture gets assembled by whoever buys it.

Yep. IKEA is on the list (bottom of page) of those the Florida Family Association claims it intimidated into pulling sponsorship from All American Muslim on the Learning Channel. I guess they forced IKEA into closing all its middle eastern stores, too.

That kind of political defaming on the part of right-wing bigots alone is enough to hire lots of PIs and lawyers to combat intentional attacks and extortion on their business.

According to the IKEA website, (new window) they have stores in Kuwait, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

I think a simple libel suit would work just fine.

Ha Ha. I design and build my own furniture. I use real wood and fits exactly what I need it to do. It only cost me $120 to build a queen size bed. 6" thick post, the side post 12" tall and hide the box spring so we don't need a dust ruffle. The top of the mattress is at the right height so the wife can lay back and receive while I stand. It is great for when my back is hurting. I will use two pieces of a bifold door and boards to make a book shelf before buying Ikea.

And how much did your table saw cost? And how much is the rent on a place big enough to keep it?

Real furniture is put together by a dedicated craftsman with a passion for his craft.

Real furniture is anything you use as furniture. Cover a wire spool with a table cloth, call it a coffee table. Can i put shiat on it? Serves its purpose. Now if your going to get into "my 3000$ coffee table looks better than your wirespool coffee table" arguement, thats a hole different story.

Sounds like having a void argument about where to set one's cup of Java.
