It's bad enough that kids can't spell normal words, but they can't even spell "gonna" correctly?

2012-02-29 05:21:59 PM
That's what you get for trying to change the already ridiculous work "gonna" to an even more ridiculous version.

It's unfortunate that this MOTTSAPPLESAUCE led to disruption in school. Sorry, I meant mistake.

It's kinda sad when this is what set me off about the article.

To be fair, gonna is just a misspelling/contraction of "going to", so it can't really be misspelled.

But can someone please explain how pretty much all other western countries manage without the concept of 'school lockdown' existing at all?

While this event caused a great deal of anxiety among students, staff and parents, be assured that we will always err on the side of caution when it comes to the safety of our boys and girls.

The only possible explanation is that they must actually have *more* guns than us, so they can look after themselves instead of relying on the govt to issue a namby-pampy lockdown.

So, my 10 year old started with origami and then progressed into making all kinds of all other fun stuff with paper. Part of his exhibit was a very carefully re-created Colt 1911 handgun out of paper. It even has a functioning slide and a clip that comes out. Creative, right?

Negative. That's a concerned call from school principal, informing us of serious consequences if he brings such creations to "show and tell" next time around.

My girlfriend's 11-year-old was suspended for using his sweater to swat at a girl during a game of 'Tag', because the zipper caught her cheek. The school considered it a weapon. I told her to watch out for further signs of criminal behavior...like Dodgeball.

/your story still wins the ignoramus award, it just reminded me of this.

I don't have kids, but I might someday. In a BS school "lockdown" situation like this one, what's to stop the parents from just showing up at the school and marching out their children? I'm sorry, but school administrator's aren't wardens running a prison. They don't get to issue "lockdowns." If it's so dangerous that the kids need to be locked in a room then it's too dangerous for them to be there and I'd pick my kid up.

My opinion is further colored by the fact that the wife used to teach. She subsequently left the profession after 4 years due to the idiocy of administration. After hearing her stories, plus ones like this, school administrators are the absolute last group of people I would want taking charge of my hypothetical children in a crisis situation.

SaintAnky: I'm sorry, but school administrator's aren't wardens running a prison.

I beg to differ. It is precisely what their job is. Inculcating children to acquiesce to ANYbody who demonstrates a posture of authority.

You can leave school illiterate, mathematically inept and with an interest in absolutely nothing but PS3 games, WWE and who said what on Real Housewives, last night, but if you piss off the man, we're gonna knock your dick in the dirt, son.

Name one job left in this country that public education prepares you for. Hell, it barely prepares you for college which, lately, prepares you for nothing but debt and the same paper towel dispenser degree as the other 3,000 mooks who managed to con their parents into mortgaging their home that year.

The system, you see, is broken. And nobody can figure out a way to make a buck off of fixing the system, especially when the people with all the money are trying to break what's left of it as fast as they can. School is PRECISELY incarceration prep. That dark tint on the collective glasses of the body politic isn't roses. It's what they grow in.

Who the hell spells it "gunna"?

It's "gonna", you dill-hole. If you're going to use lazy English, at least spell it correctly.

2012-02-29 06:16:45 PM
Normally I like to poke fun at over-reaction, but in this case, I might have to agree with what happened.

If I received a text from an unknown source saying "gunman be at west hall today", what would I do? Probably go with the "better safe than sorry" logic and report it to 911.

What is 911 going to do? They pretty much have to take it seriously, so the first thing you do is notify the school

What is the school going to do? Safest thing is probably to lock all the doors and keep everyone inside until you know what is going on.

While the outcome seems outlandish, I think every step that leads to it is at least somewhat logical.

I approve of the trend of overreacting to every perceived threat, no matter how nebulous, unlikely or ridiculous.

It will teach our children the valuable skill of shiatting a giant brick over everything they don't understand and to never, ever use judgment or common sense when reacting to the world around them. They'll need that if they ever want to run for public office.

I would've threatened the principal with an even bigger gun, a lawyer.

My son was arrested at school a few days after Columbine, because a teacher heard someone at his lunch table make a joke about it occurring on Hitler's b-day. I just happened to arrive right after that to pick him up for a dentist appt.

Massive hilarity ensued.
