Unrelated Discussion Question: Is ATLiens the most important scifi hip hop concept album of all time?

i think that any scifi hip hop concept album that forces an artist to respond to questions about whether he is in a cult, on drugs or gay is probably a pretty sweet scifi hip hop concept album.

In the 70s, we called this "Mothership Connection"

I must respectfully disagree with the relative ranking of Deltron 3030. That said, that album makes it very clear that Del is on drugs.

i'm not going to speak ill of deltron 3030, but ATLiens kicked open the door for what could be accepted in mainstream hip hop at a time when it was a really narrow spectrum.

I think i'm more amazed that i actually have the Outkast, Dr. Octagon, and PWEI albums...probably the only time I will see this combo mentioned in the same breath again...

I've got hand it to Damon Albarn and crew. They have found a way to make money making music and creatively sell out at the same time.

That being said, I want a pair of these now:

apparently big boi wanted him to collaborate on his most recent solo album, but outkast still owes its label an album and they're not allowed to record together unless it's for that album.

In related news, this is the weirdest news I've seen on the sci-fi hip-hop concept album front in a while.

Dogfish head is brewing a beer called "Positive Contact", along with "Deltron 3030-inspired recipes" from Mario Batali and others. The beer comes with remixes on vinyl. I don't even

"The beer will be released in a dynamic box set of six 750-ml champagne bottles, with a 10-inch vinyl EP of four new Deltron 3030 remixes created exclusively for this project, and a list of Deltron 3030-inspired recipes from a small group of renowned chefs (see below). Invite some friends over, rock the album, drink the beer and whip up a multi-course meal. It's a house party in a box."

this... is good.

Deltron 3030 is my far my most-listened-to hip-hop album. Love it. Can't wait for deltron event two. Wish they'd bring Del back to Gorillaz

Song sounds like a late 90s Beck reject... until Andre comes in and just farking kills it.

I normally don't like Gorillaz stuff, but that wasn't bad. Glad to see someone making videos and doing it well too.

I forgave him after the "Neurosurgeon..." verse, but if there's a remix of that track that skips the full minute lecture on how to spell "D-E-L", I'd be all over that.

Plus, any song that gives Dan the Automator some credit is a good thing. He pays Del back during the Intergalactic Rap Battle later, though.

Yeah, I could agree with that. I just love how original Del is. All of it is good. Del, Heiro, Souls of Mischief, Deltron, Dr. Octogaon (that dude is wierd) but its all real true hip hop. not commercialized auto tuned MTV garbage.

Hieroglyphics Ft. Goaple on Make your move....man, take a bong hit. Throw that track on and mellow out.

I wouldn't call the folks behind Gorillaz "sellouts", necessarily. Yeah, a "sellout" is someone who makes money from their creative work, but more specifically, they're someone who does that by putting it out there indiscriminately, with no real concern for what their fans are interested in or the sort of light it casts their work in. Gorillaz isn't letting, say, Bank of America make commercials with their songs, or developing McDonalds' tie-ins with their brand; they're sticking to clothing tie-ins, posters, DVDs, and other stuff that their fans are likely to want to purchase.

With music prices fallen from the abnormal high of the 90s, and with the old Studio system pretty much in shambles, musicians can't really rely on a steady retainer fee or the astronomical album stipends that we all came to consider standard sometime in the late 70s. As a result, they find themselves facing a similar question lots of web-heavy artists (like web-comic folks, machinima groups, and youtube performers) have had to answer; how do I monetize this really popular thing I've made? Trinkets and clothing are a good way to do that without sacrificing the credibility of your product, and I'd say that's just the direction music as an industry is heading into right now -internet self-promotion, concerts, and swag instead of actual music sales- particularly for concept acts like Gorillaz with an interesting back-story/universe to mine. Hell, their last album was basically an anime storyline; they could probably make a bundle trying to get it laid out and animated as something like an OVA.

/And does it really need to pointed out that self-promotion to a friendly niche-audience is exactly what Albarn is doing here by letting the video play for free on a popular site covering sci-fi?

2012-02-29 05:23:20 PM
How in the world are Gorillaz creative sellouts? They continually put out some of the most inventive pop music of the past decade. Are these Blur fans who are still convinced hip-hop isn't "real" music?

I loved Demon Days above all else at the time and couldn't wait for Plastic Beach. Pre-ordered it and on the day was soundly disapoint! My son for some reason fell head over heels and played it to no end all the time. Still his favorite. It took a lot of listenings to begin to enjoy PB that wouldn't have happened if not for my kid. I still wouldn't rate it close to DD but I've upped my approval of it highly though. I guess what I'm saying is PB becomes much more palatable after 80-90 listens.

Disney music for grown-ups. I swear, I'll never understand how anyone out of high school can give any of this crap a second listen.
