but.... watching dragnet on an ipad sounds fun.

2012-02-29 11:54:45 AM
What does that even mean?

2012-02-29 12:03:09 PM
"The questions I want to ask most of my colleagues are: Can you even do the whole song from beginning to end? Can you do it onstage like you did it in the studio? Do you float like a butterfly or sting like a pre-recorded bee?"

i didn't realize that the the "float like a butterfly and sting like a bee" thing was an either/or, and that stinging like a bee is a negative? also, bands have been using the studio as an instrument since f*cking pet sounds and that hasn't stopped those bands from putting on great shows and even playing entire songs.

Come on Dave, gimme a break.

2012-02-29 12:24:30 PM
Asked what sets VAN HALEN apart from other bands, Dave says "We throw a sick party, and if you get invited, you gotta go. For starters, on this tour KOOL & THE GANG are opening our shows, and that's full circle for us because we used to play 'Hollywood Swinging' in five-sets-a-night-beer-bars. And the first three songs on our new record are thunder-funk. What we're giving is the best of the old and the new - think of it like watching 'Dragnet' on your iPad."

Subby is retarded.

You were relevent in the early 80's. No one cares what you think. Sammy Hagar was better anyway.

I used to think Van Halen was cool. Then I turned 14. Christ that shiat does NOT hold up. The only influence that band had was convincing a generation of guitar players that mindless wanking=great guitar playing. Hair metal was/is truly a mind-bendingly horrible genre.

Example 10,342 why Roth is a douche.

Go away. The new record sucks. The old records suck. They suck.

All you haters better STFU and chill. I
You'd think Roth would learn to keep his pie hole shut to keep his job since Eddie can be a hair trigger at times, but VH is making Hard Rock good again. That is notable even if you haters think that Killers, Strokes, Silverside Pickups or whatever passes for music these days are the cutting edge Hard Rock.

/Off to go buy my Maiden tickets. Seriously.

The part that got eaten after the "I"...

think that Truth completes the VH1/VH2/FW/WCF sequence better than Diver Down or 1984. Yes Van Hagar was interesting and enjoyable. VH3 never happened (We all agreed!!) but Truth is a good old fashion hard rock album. It fits like an old sweater that has been sitting in a drawer for 20 years making bad music. To hear them rock heavy again just makes me happy.

/Don't make little hearts with three and less than thingys. It will eat your other wise awesome rants ;)

The notion that you think that Hard Rock can also be "cutting edge" at this point in time is everything we really need to know.

It's AOR. It's dead and done. They bought it, sold it, and bought it again, for a profit. It's what Sting was eleven years ago with "Fields Of Gold" and Hootie circa 1995.

Get ready for the deluge of posters telling you that their favorite obscure band you've never heard of is "cutting edge" and "doing it for the art, not for the money".

The new record is balls-out excellent. Everyone knows that today's music generally sucks. The recording industry makes it that way, favoring the flavor of the week.

Roth makes a lot of sense. He also makes a lot of nonsense.

But he is the voice of Van Halen. Sammy Hagar sucks balls. He has always sucked balls. Chickenfoot is farking terrible. And Sammy is a bitter, bitter old man.

Anyway, Dave on stage is a joke now, but the new record kicks serious hard rock ass.

One of these days, I'm going to break out "On Every Street", skip past the first track, and it'll be like having a whole new album of fresh Dire Straits material.

But every time I pick it up, I see the first song, laugh out loud, and put it back on the shelf, and grab Neck and Neck instead.

Nothing wrong with "Calling Elvis." Nothing great, either, but not horrible the way "Tattoo" is.

"Mean Street," "Dirty Movies," "Sinners Swing," "Hear About It Later," and "Unchained," are the five best songs Van Halen ever made, and they're all on the same album. Combine them with "On Fire," "Eruption," "And the Cradle Will Rock," "Somebody Get Me A Doctor," and "Ain't Talkin 'Bout Love," and you get one - ONE - great Van Halen album. The rest I could take or leave.

The songs from the current album are from over 30 years ago. Eddie didn't even bother trying to write new songs for an old Dave. He rewrote demos he'd had sitting around since he was 21 and made the album with it. So actually, it is like an old sweater that's been sitting in a drawer for 20 years.

Not technically, but I play guitar so I might notice things a non-musician won't hear. He does have a very distinct sound though. Guitarists blow thousands on gear trying to replicate it, which is hilarious considering his most famous guitar was made from spare parts.

He also abuses the same six chord shapes in every song......highly overrated guitar player.

"The questions I want to ask most of my colleagues are: Can you even do the whole song from beginning to end? Can you do it onstage like you did it in the studio? Do you float like a butterfly or sting like a pre-recorded bee?"

And will the DAT machine play back that bee at 44.1kHz or 48kHz? Do you know?

Will your teenaged nepotist bass player know how to adjust fretting and intonation to compensate, or will you become a viral internet laughingstock?
