Obviously. The driver isn't even employing the foolproof hold-it-up-with-one-hand-out-the-window technique.

If it was secure, what's the problem?

If it didn't fall off, I would say it is indeed how to move a sofa.

Meh. You drive down 26th Street thru Little Village in Chicago and you will see this every day.

abhorrent1: If it was secure, what's the problem?

It shifts the center of gravity of the whole car/couch combination up quite a bit for one thing, which makes the vehicle more likely to roll, or at least steer differently than the driver is used to.
Seriously, you can rent a small U-haul for $20 at least here in the states you can. Probably overall a better idea for a short trip.

FTA: with the passenger apparently using his left hand to cling on to them.

FTFA: "They were on very busy 70mph roads and they would have caused a potentially lethal crash if those sofas had slipped off the roof into the carriageways."

Well, there's your problem.. you have carriages that can apparently go faster than cars. Wait... is that a problem?

Let's hope it doesn't get stuck in the stairwell due to a door that's no longer there.

My first job (wal-mart in SC), I helped take a item out for a customer. It was one of those pieces of furniture that you assemble at home. The box was 6' by 30" by 4" thick and weighed 209lbs. As we got into the parking lot they said something insulting. When we got to the car and I see it is a Chevette and they have a total of five people with them. They asked how will we be able to load it. I said I didn't know and walked away. I hope I taught them a lesson in insulting people. If not, atleast I didn't get in trouble for wrecking a customer's car.

I worked in a lumber yard and couldn't believe what people loaded and drove out with. I once helped a guy tie rebar underneath his truck.

I'm more concerned with "this pair of bungling furniture removal men."

Removal - The act of taking something away. (The dishes are removed from the table after eating. Sekrit Keenyan Mooslims should be removed from office.)

Move - To change location. These guys are movers, not removers. A remover would be a trash company.

When I buy a house, I hire movers to take my furniture from my old house to my new house. After that's done, I'll hire a remover to remove the junk.

English - Spoken around the world, except in England.

"The pair had two large sofas perched precariously on the roof of their small car - with the passenger apparently using his left hand to cling on to them."

Close...it was the passenger though, who is only slightly less useless.

Local guy got killed by these shenanigans last year...unsecured chair blew out of a pickup bed, he swerved to avoid it and plowed into the pickup which had pulled to the side of the road while they tried to collect the furniture.

What sucks is the most they could do (far as I know from updates on the local news) to the driver of the pickup was cite them for an unsecured load and a few of traffic citations. Now, the CIVIL suit would likely be a tad more serious.

That's nothing. My stepdad and I strapped our dining table to the hood of our station wagon and a 6 drawer dresser to the roof and took them for a 5 mile trip.

It was a big wagon though. We probably cold have added a few matresses.

Uncool Story Bro:
Riding my bike down the interstate. Two car lengths ahead someone has a couch in the back of a pickup with no tailgate. I need to get around this jackass before something happens, so I look right to see if I can pass.

I look back straight and there is now a couch on the highway. Across both lanes. Now there are a lot of places a couch does not belong. On the highway is probably in the top three. Let me tell you guys something. When you are hurtling toward a couch at 75mph on a bike, your butt puckers something fierce.I did manage to swerve it, but hitting sandy shoulder isn't much fun either. I was a bit pissed off.

There is an art form to moving large pieces of furniture with small vehicles. This was not a demonstration of that art. It's pretty good but leaves room for improvement.

Pretty sure I know the exact intersection that second pic is from - was that taken in Western NY?
