If you would have told me in the 80's that in the year 2012, a black man would be the POTUS, gay military members would actively show their affection in front of cameras and that some states had legalized gay marriage, I would have commended us on social evolution.

To a lot of people who live in areas where this is rare or unheard of, ist still „gross" and something which is remarkable enough to have a value judgement attached to it, like "I don't like this".

To people like that who aren't used to seeing it, seeing anything that "Teh Gheys" do automatically makes people think of all those hot sticky nasty santorumy things that make them uncomfortable.
