No kidding, I mean, its all you got... I mean, you didn't even keep your WNBA team, and the UFL probably won't come back.

With them getting a new arena, I'd guess that they'd try to bring back an Arena Football team to help with off-season dates.

So- how much tax payer money is being paid to a sport that does nothing for the local economy?

Darth_Lukecash: So- how much tax payer money is being paid to a sport that does nothing for the local economy?

Really, nobody goes to Kings games and goes out before/afterwords. Or out of town fans/team staff?

Maybe you want to claim it isn't very much relatively... but, to say that if they lost of Kings they wouldn't lose "anything" is silly. And the "multiplier" effect isn't a made up thing.... if there isn't Kings games employing surrounding staff, that is also income not being spent in the community.

From what I understand, the money arenas don't bring in taxes anything close to what they've cost. Why cant all sport team owners buy their own property?

Although, I am curious about how many stadiums are also being built with eyes aimed convention/concert venue?

This is a bit of a different situation. The ESC is going to be the center piece of a brand new development. The plan is to revitalize a part of the city that has been a wasteland due to railway pollution. The best way for the city to make money is to get people to come out of the suburbs. Without a downtown arena, and a easy way to get there on public transportation there are very few reasons for people to commute. This hopefully will change that.

Not to mention that this will not cost the city anything out of the general fund, and they will be getting 2-5% of all ticket revenue from the arena. The city will also own the arena, though they will be leasing the operating proceeds to AEG.

Apparently George is pissed, but Joe and Gavin are happy. The Maloofs get to refinance their loan with the city, and they get a cut of parking revenue for Kings games.

Either Stern scared them straight, or they plan on selling right before the new arena opens.

Speaking as a Seattlite who would really like a NHL team here, I say "congratulations, Sact'o."

Seattle will just have to wait.

/Even though we were the first US city to win the Stanley Cup... harumph.

That cocksucker David Stern keeps giving other cities more chances to keep their teams, but not Seattle.

No doubt he has lemon parties with his butt buddy Clay Bennett.

Why do you insist on taking a team its community wants? I'll give Seattle $2.37 if they take the Bobcats.

hey, if Los Angeles can party down as extortion bait for the NFL for years, Seattle can screw over a few other cities for the NBA for awhile (we can be the Fredo to their Michael!). Better give us millions or.... Seattle! Muahaha!!!

I wouldn't mind a hockey team - it'd be nice, if only to get the Bruins here once in a great while. The NBA can suck it, however.

I don't like basketball, and I like the Kings even less because here in Sac, they preempt Sharks hockey on CSN when the games coincide.

That said, I'm glad the Kings are staying here in Sacramento. It makes us less of a cow town.

(Though, we go the River Cats, which is awesome if you like Triple-A baseball)

And, regarding the SuperSonics, I think it was the outrage at how the team was moved seemingly at a whim that caused the NBA to be more reluctant to teams moving.

Blackhawks. So, I already love rooting against Luongo and the Sedin sisters! But I haven't lived in Chicago in years (plus the Hawks lost me for a long time there during the Bill Wirtz' blackout years, so I'm kind of a reborn fan). I'd totally support a Seattle team.

/But I only have one NFL allegiance.

Over half of Sacrementans are Lakers fans. The River Cats outdraw the Kings on any given night where they overlap, and have done for years. shiatty owners, sure, but there's no intrinsic reason why Sacramento deserves good ones.

As a Portlander, if the Sabres played Seattle every year I'd be more likely to go to that than a Chargers vs Seahawks game. First of all, hockey's just better, and second of all, the Seahawks charge too damn much.

Why does the NBA keep going after cities that actually like their teams? At least the NFL stopped doing that after the Colts, Oilers, and Browns (but God damn, the Texans should be called the Oilers, the Ravens should be called the Colts, and Indy should have made up its own damn name!).

Beer? The only one I was actually hurt by was the Oilers moving to bumfark Nashville (while that Bud Adams assclown took the name and history and then changed the name to the Titans!). Houston should be the Oilers not the Texans! So yeah, I would like some beer with that cheese.

Also, I know Sac-town people and they love their Kings despite them sucking constantly. The Maloofs and Stern are just a bunch of douches, that's almost an objective scientific fact.

2012-02-28 02:45:34 AM
Not a done deal yet. There just isn't the need for state of the art corporate boxes in Sac, the downtown location is a logistic nightmare and most music arena tours skip Sac for reasons completely unrelated to Arco. It just makes far more sense for a big act to book an extra night in the Bay that's guaranteed to sell out, then to break down, drive an hour and set up again to play for a 3/4 full house. All my life we've driven to SF/Oakland for shows and nobody thinks twice about it. And as for smaller shows, a band that will sell out Slim's or the Great American will pull 20 people at Harlow's on a Tuesday. The only venue that ever pulled in Sac was The Cattle Club and even then their capacity was only 250 or so and Jerry Perry was miles ahead of the curve as far as booking went. Most bands don't play San Jose and SF either. It's one or the other. And the idea alot of basketball attendees will either get a hotel room in Sac or stay downtown and drink is a pipe dream, anyone that has to drive will leave right after the game to go back to their locals instead of staying and running the DUI gauntlet. And who goes out to dinner before a 7:30 tip off? And the hipsters that drive the midtown bar scene in Sac could give a rat's ass about basketball and certainly aren't going to welcome a bunch of jock sniffers into their hangouts after the games. This arena just isn't needed.

2012-02-28 03:06:32 AM
Yeah well there is something to be said about a city having a pro franchise and believe me, no other league (that matters aka NFL, MLB, NHL) is coming to that town. I guess Sacramento doesn't mind going back to full cow town status.

Except for the midtown scene which is actually decent, cheap rent and a ton of bars and eateries within easy walking distance, the only thing Sac has is location. An hour to the bay area, an hour and a half to Tahoe, an hour ish to Napa etc. Although the rivers and delta are pretty sweet if you have a boat.

2012-02-28 11:09:09 AM
Good for you guys, Sacramento. I'm really curious to see what happens with Chris Hansen and Seattle now. (Not the "have a seat over there" Chris Hansen. The "random millionaire who bought a bunch of land to make an arena in the SODO district" Chris Hansen). It's my understanding that the NBA isn't going to be expanding any time soon, so the only way to get a team is to get one from another city.

zez: El Brujo: Screw the NBA. We want NHL here in Seattle. At least, speaking for the people that I know.

Add me to the "Meh" on the NBA but "yay" on the NHL camp.

The local sports radio talk has been about the Phoenix Coyotes, but a quick bit of googling deems that unlikely.

They should bring the Islanders out here. Wouldn't even have to change the team name.

I can't get too upset about this. I didn't want the Maloofs hanging around here, but it's hard to get pissed at them actually getting a project approved, even if it wasn't financed the way it should have been (aside: "I'll have to pay for it HURRR" only applies if you park at the arena or buy tickets, which you can easily avoid). The railyards are a useless dump at the moment; having an arena there will be an improvement, plus I'll have something to look at from my office window.

The thing that burns my ass is that this means Kevin Johnson is sure to be reelected.
