Radar doesn't look too promising, at least for an early afternoon start.

I'm just glad the NBA stuff is over. What a nightmare. If Central Florida has aspirations for the Olympics, it's gonna need alot of work.

BTW, that image above is auto-updating. Not looking quite as bad as when I posted it.

Will Cena embrace the hate?
How many more times they'll mention Danica?
What will DW say?
How many Daytona USA jokes can we make?
Will the Florida weather go full Derpy?

No way they race today.

It looks like even if they don't start at 12:00, they are going to get it going at some point, even if it goes into the night. Time is ticking until they have to start heading for Phoenix.

Tentatively 7:02PM, just announced.

Daytona prez Chitwood: "We think 7 p.m. is realistic" and says there is "some buffer" if it's still wet then.

Engines scheduled to fire @ 7:02PM.

Cena will not give the command.

What happens if it has to be delayed further? Do they delay the Phoenix race at some point?

2012-02-27 10:26:39 AM
If this thing gets rain delayed for 6-8 hours, does Daytona have power lighting?

Can they run under the lights? That would be epic

Further updates:

"Tuesday is an option before we'd have to reconsider packing up and leaving."

Yes they will run under the lights if it goes off tonight.

I'm assuming it will look like the Coke 400 that they run every year at Daytona on the first weekend in July.

2012-02-27 10:33:23 AM
Yep, 7 eastern is now offical as per nascar.com. Tuesday is an option if that doesnt happen.

Please, it's NASCAR, I'd rather pick up extra hours

Yes, until recently the Daytona 500 has always ended under the lights. They used to start at 4pm or so eastern. Moved it to noon only recently.

Sorry, I meant to qualify that. Yes, I got into NASCAR in 2005... and yes, it used to be a day race. I meant in a span of 5-ish recent years it ran under the lights.

2012-02-27 10:40:34 AM
Crap... now I don't have an excuse to make this a 3-day weekend and start drinking at 11am Central.

Yeah, I know, but I wouldn't stay home sick for big football bowl games.

/or March Madness

Saturday April 7 most likely make-up date if they can't get it off this week. Apparently they would rather not run on Easter.

I feel bad for the people with tickets that had to miss out and catch their flights back home. That's some $$$$$$.

Yep. Happened to me at the Coke 600 in Charlotte a few years ago. Totally sucked, since I can only afford *maybe* one race per year.

At 150 mph, it only takes about 14 hours to drive from Daytona to Phoenix; what's the problem?

2012-02-27 12:06:30 PM
Ordinarily at this time I would be at work anyhow listening to the race. So you're telling me that I didn't need to take off today?

/sarcasm, already on vacation

The problem is they top out at over 200, so it'd take far less than 14 hours to get from Daytona to Phoenix.

Well, I assumed they'd stop at Waffle House at some point, plus setting up a string of pit crews along I-10 would slow things down a bit.

Looking at the radar, it looks like the heaviest stuff has passed already. Just some scattered stuff inbound now.

Hopefully the jet dryers can do their thing in time.

Possibly not. Latest from the press box 2 minutes ago:

Has Fox given word if they're playing it later, or on another channel? My wife is into Alcatraz and she's pissed enough that she's gotta sit through the 500.
