Obligatory Howard Stern reference goes here.

Why would I need a 41 megapixel camera on my phone?

It's not like I'll need to print up a billboard sized print or Kim Jong Ill sized mural.

What am I missing here?

pixel density != picture quality. Stop being stupid.

It's so much smaller than the other Symbians.

Honest Bender: pixel density != picture quality. Stop being stupid.

Wait, you mean the optic elements the light has to shine through to land on the sensor play a roll in photo quality, and plastic lenses found in phones aren't high quality?

Look, the only way we're going to be able to have "Blade Runner" zooming is if we have a massive increase in pixel density.

You wouldn't even be able to print a billboard. Chances are the quality is so awful that the pictures would be unusable. To print a billboard you need a massive image sensor size. And yet people continue to fall for the idea that higher mexapixels equal better quality pictures. The article fails to mention important factors in image quality such as sensor size, ISO settings, and aperture size.

Yup. I noticed that lack of info as well.

You might be able to create a smart phone with optics equivalent to mid-grade consumer camera, but it is going to be thick and will have unique battery placement constraints. Many people are not going to want to lug something that large around (pfft, wimps never had to use an '80s or '90s cell phone) unless it comes with a fantastic hands-free system. Even then, many people dislike hands-free.

It's not about taking a 41MP pic. It's about being able to crop an 8MP image out of a snapshot without losing pixel density. It also gives 4x lossless digital zoom while recording 1080p video, and 6x lossless zoom for 720p video.

A lens that side, unless comprised entirely of transparent unobtanium, cannot POSSIBLY resolve such an image.

This will waste memory and sell phones to rubes. Nothing more.

/in the optical instrument business
//If it could resolve it, that would be AWESOME

In other news, Symbian still exists.

1) Why is this necessary?
2) Why Symbian and not WP7?

2012-02-27 05:24:38 PM
At that point, you're actually making the image quality far worse by trying to extract data that is not there.

The specs of the phone are also very laughable.

The Bestest: 1) Why is this necessary?
2) Why Symbian and not WP7?

Nokia needs gimmicks to stay in the game. They're trying to retain Symbian fans/devs while not confirming that it will be kept alive.

Before even that, you need a decent lens to expose that sensor to light, and the little microscopic lens on phone cameras is not going to cut it.

If you don't think that is outstanding for a cell phone, you are smokin crack. Nokia has been the king of camera phones for a long time now, and will continue with that title for years to come.

I'll be picking it up, and maybe it's WP7 counterpart a year or so later. Have to expect Microsoft is writing the code to get this camera to work in Nokias WP7 phones.

N8 was easily the best phone I owned because the camera was awesome. Everything else aside, the camera kicked ass and really is the only extra feature I wanted in a phone. Although the HDMI out and FM transmitter actually were much more useful than I ever expected. If only the web browsing experience was better it would have been a perfect product.

Wow. Symbian. How...quaint. I'm holding out for an OS/2 phone. Or maybe CP/M. Something with a slash.

"...But this combination isn't about shooting pictures the size of billboards! Instead, it's about creating amazing pictures at normal, manageable sizes. There's a combination of benefits.

The technology means that taking typically sized shots (say, 5 megapixels) the camera can use oversampling to combine up to seven pixels into one "pure" pixel, eliminating the visual noise found on other mobile phone cameras. On top of that, you can zoom in up to 3X without losing any of the details in your shot - and there's no artificially created pixels in your picture, either."

It's packing an f/2.4 glass lens made by Carl Zeiss . While it may not be up to the quality of a Canon IS lens, it is a hell of a lot better than the optics on your typical cell phone.

While cool, I'd say the announcement of the Lumia 610 was the real meat of what happened for Nokia today. I mean, if they would convince Virgin or Boost to put that on their networks, the feature phone would be dead. Up until now, all of the phones in that bracket have been crappy cheap Android devices.

I want a huge unweildy camera with a proper lens and one of those 100M pixel sensors they used in Hubble with a motorised heavy mount with motion tracking so I can take pictures of anything from F1 cars and jets to nebulae n stuff. Might even take a picture of my dog. Also it must do video.

Nice to see some Symbian innovation. While the top brass at Nokia have become caught up in the MS WP7 bullshiat, it's nice to see the engineers and product guys still realise how important Symbian still is.

/Battery life measured in weeks and speed considerably better than the competition
