Detroit is way cool.

Subby sucks.

I just wish I could figure out how to make money there. There must be a million acres of empty building spaces, and grossly underutilized freeways, fiber optics, other utilities, etc.

I've seen some of the urban farming experiments that look cool.

It appears there are openings in the armed robbery field.

The fail part is that they aren't down 100%. In most places armed robberies in public schools are 0.

Maybe recycling old building material. Had a buddy who would get permission (sometimes) to go into places that were about to be demolished and get old plubimg fixtures, electrical fixtures, fireplaces, marble tile etc. And clean it up and sell it to people remodling their homes. His biggest coup was this house in PA where he got a marble fireplace and a whole freaking staircase, stair bannister and all.

Might be tough as you will have higher fixed costs than normal for the armored column to provide security for you. Sad part is some neighborhoods in Detroit have contracted out to private security firms.

I would just like to point out that we have the military policing lawless regions in foreign countries. Over here, we have Detroit, a lawless region within our own borders. Something is very wrong with that.

That was my first thought. You have to actually show up to school to hold up other students and assault them.

Just blow the whole city up, with everyone in it, and start over.

Sounds like neo-feudalism. The wealthy landowners provide security for neighborhoods. The only thing missing is a tithe to the liege.

Here's why it's not happening in the schools anymore. This was today:

14-year-old killed Detroit mom with shotgun, relatives say (new window)

This was the third murder in the City of Detroit in 24 hours. Another may die, a 6-year old shot in a carjacking. Can we send in the peacekeepers yet?

When are we going to wall off Detroit and make it like Escape From LA? Or more aptly, Arkham City?

Oh dude, those aren't fixed costs, they're variable costs. You only need a company size element to protect you downtown but as you venture out into the hood you may need to beef it up to battalion strength.

If you had five billion dollars, you could redevelop the first ring of Detroit and make forty billion.

There are so many ways to look at this, and every one of them is a fail.

Fail 1. They actually keep crime stats on Detroit public schools.
Fail 2. They are promoting them the same way that cities promote their own crime stats.
Fail 3. They are worse than many cities' stats.
Fail 4. A school system should know how to properly use percentiles, as mentioned by lockheed1039
Fail 5. They didn't take into account the decreased enrollment, they just took the improved numbers and ran with them.

As much as those of you who live there may like Detroit, it is an irreversibly failing city. If that statement were not true you would not have had all the ability to appreciate Detroit-based humor sucked out of you. It isn't funny to you that people make fun of Detroit because you know in your hearts that Detroit is terminal. It will not recover because no one is willing to give it what it needs. That is not funny, I agree. And that is perhaps the biggest fail of all. But FFS lighten up. Detroit is a comedy meme, even if it is one you don't care for. We all know there are still great things to be experienced in Detroit. But we all know equally well that eventually Detroit will become the largest ghost town in history. Detroit is like LiLo. If you just look closely at individual parts, there are some pretty nice things going on in some places. But back up and take a look at the total package, and you can see tragedy in the wings and vultures circling overhead. It is only a matter of time.

Just out of curiosity, what does Detroit "need"? That is, other than being burned to the ground?

No, probably not. The issue is that Detroit's metropolitan area is actually growing. Eventually, the vacuum that is Detroit will draw urban pioneers back in -- if only because the geography is too useful. Detroit real estate controls the River Rouge, access to the Detroit River islands, the bulk of the transportation corridors, and the international crossings. Even the downtown and university areas are still potentially lucrative. Detroit, despite it's almost systematic political failure, is too well positioned geographically to fail entirely. It doesn't have a more successful, larger near-neighbor to shadow it's survival, like a Camden or a Newark or a Directional City does. (Or even a Flint) Simply divesting the majority of the outlying low-density areas would massively help the remainder of Detroit. Detroit actually can support an area of about half its current size.

That sounds good on paper until you realize how dangerous it is due to crime. That's the reason people don't want to be there.

How about uprooting all the businesses that were sent to the South and give them a deal they can't refuse or attempt to scuttle?

If trying to kill Detroit through non-investment was something you couldn't do, perhaps the city would grow. Think Delta City, except no income-based divide.

Since the popuylartion has been dwindling, it is hardly surprising there are fewer people to commit the crimes.

Crime chases money out. It thereby creates more of the poverty that the criminals use as an excuse. Ta da. Pretty soon you got four crack dealers, a B&E artist and two car thieves all staring one sandwich.
