The Southern Dandy: Doesn't get what all the fuss is about.

Well, the fuss certainly isn't about dead, self-loathing-Jew, marginal authors who thought that preaching the gospel of "everybody should be a complete dick" was Über edgy.

9beers: I think it was about 10 years ago when something like this happened to me. I was at Kmart to pick up a few things and was walking down the isle to get to where the personal hygiene stuff was. I turned down an isle just in time to see an old lady fall and hit the ground hard. I guess some people would have ran to help, I turned around and went to the electronics department. Yeah, it's a true story. I guess most people will call me a dick but I did what felt right to me and I'd do the same thing again.

Cast my vote for "yep, yer a dick", then and now.

Now you did it. Here comes the "It's all our fault" folks.
We didn't give them the opportunity to..........
We didn't give them the skillset for...........
We didn't provide enough..............
We didn't help them acquire.............

Many of the problems stem not from what we didn't "do for them", but what we did and continue to do.

Do-gooder programs have effectively worked to destroy "black culture" by encouraging the destruction of the nuclear family.

What? Avoiding a potential threat vector in the form of an unknown male well past breeding age? From a biological standpoint, it makes too much sense.

Actually, a man is good until the day he dies. Ask any female nurse or nurses assistant who worked in a nursing home.

Hopefully, they'll catch the bugger who jacked this guy and maybe he'll 'resist arrest' on the way in when the camera's are off.

As for those who walked by the old guy, I hold nothing but contempt for them. Judge Mathis always brags about Detroit, but the city basically needs to be wiped off the map.

I've been in a few situations where I had the choice to act or walk away, and I acted. I would hope that if anything happens to me, someone will come to my aid.

That's true in ethics.

But "as a species" implies some kind of biological root in the reasoning. To cut it short, the end game of biology is successful reproduction. Once reproduction is no longer possible, that DNA is just cooling it's heels until the end.

In many herds, when the very young or very old can't keep up, they're driven out or killed. You see it in nature all the time. Hell, you see it in human history even. Many cases of the old taking a day's worth of water and some food and taking a long walk in the dead of winter with no coat or something similar.

So if you're going to invoke the cruel laws of nature, you should at least KNOW those laws and how they operate.

kimmygibblershomework: The local TV news said that this was the second time this has happened to him in a month. His car was stolen earlier. Detroit sucks. There should be no shame for the good folks to leave that shiathole. It is truly the USA's most sprawling ghetto. Re-gentrification is pointless, as it only gives the locals new shiny things to steal/steal from. They will even make fun of you while they do it, knowing the cops have a stack of 50+ murders already THIS YEAR to try and solve and babbys being shot once a week. All this and Bob Ficano's entire staff is going down and for some reason the "pillars of the monosyllabic community" don't want government emergency management, even though the buses don't run, power/water/gas have been shut down to entire portions of the city, cops are under investigation for all manner of shenanigans, and the EMS personnel get robbed and murdered. Leave it to the ghetto to have a city full of sick people and shoot the doctor for his cufflinks. Just move out and let it implode. With its sprawling size, a Dresden scenario would work nicely, but smell bad for a while...

It's because white people are stealing everything from prosperous Detroit. Detroit is being stolen by the northern suburbs in Oakland County. I mean, it's the white people fault.

Okay, I think I'm a viable candidate for Detroit City Council now.

fritton: So I was walking my dogs in Chicago a few months back and there was a car accident in front of me where one of the cars just drove off afterwards. The remaining car was wedged on a little retaining wall and the back tires were spinning at top speed. I was worried that the person in the car was hurt and that's why he still had the accelerator floored.

I started jogging over to check and see if I could help and a woman yelled at me not to go near the car and leave it alone and she walked away. I honestly thought that she was just being callous and uncaring, but then I realized that she was actually trying to be helpful...to me.

I realized later that we were in a really bad neighborhood in Chicago and it might be best to let strange, borderline violent situations alone until the cops get there. Sometimes in bad areas people become afraid to help others. I can't image who would be afraid to at least call the cops and an ambulance for a bleeding 86 year old..but maybe there was something more than the article is saying

/The guy in the car that had crashed was just freaked out and didn't even realize he was on the accelerator. He thought it was the brake. We called the cops and they took it from there.

Number 1 rule of surviving in the ghettos, under no circumstance let anyone near within 2-3 feet of yourself. Keep that buffer zone and if anyone even looks to violate that, prepare to fight or flee.

If I saw someone crawling, my first assumption would be that it's a variation of the soft talking bait. Basically, someone talks really softly so you have to move closer to hear what they are saying. Once you are close to someone else, they can punch you, stab you, mug you and people will not even notice. It looks like you're buddies goofing around to everyone else.

I once fell for that scam. Someone in a car called out and asked something. I couldn't quite make out what he was saying so I got a little closer and ended up staring at a gun. I bolted because I knew the area and the guy was in a car but that could have ended really nasty.

The suburbs is a completely different thing. I would at once help someone crawling in the suburbs. But, in Detroit, 99 out of 100, trying to help would at worst get you killed and at best ruin your day. I wouldn't even call 911 in Detroit because the last time I did that, I got insulted by the operator and hung up on. In the suburbs, I would call 911 and stay with the victim until the police arrived.

These are the same kinda folks in the same town who get in shooting matches over arguments over seating at a baby shower - a BABY SHOWER! - and end up killing babies.

Do they even know what "irony" is?

Hey, welcome to life kid . . . . HOLY SHIAT, DUCK!!!

T'was ever thus, expecting anything different is folly.

Rather than arresting and convicting these folks, all of Detroit (and other similar neighborhoods in other cities) should simply be walled in and they should be given unlimited weapons, etc, and let them take care of themselves.

Hell, since their "stop snitching" mentality paints all law enforcement as the enemy, why should law enforcement risk their lives trying to defend them, or waste their time trying to get justice for them when they kill each other.

I'm gonna go with neither.

The money started pulling out around '79, folks and the money IS the government.

They wrote off making stuff here, anymore, and moved the machine to China. Wake up. Schools? They suck. Public schools do, anyhoo, because when they stopped investing making things, they stopped investing in free education for the people who would get just enough education to use a micrometer, gauge blocks and turret lathes.

They decided that any jobs here would have either very white collars or very gold shields and everybody else could fend for themselves, cause you can make more money when your plant staff works for shiny beads and gruel and can't speak English.

There is no more urban renewal, there is not more investment, there is just poverty and decay and the infrastructure in place - that made them enough money to set up shop elsewhere to begin with - is no more of any use to them than a burned out 79 Monte Carlo in a field of bricks sand weeds. The collapsed economy, Wall St. stripping the paint of the wall, partisan hackery on an eight grade schoolyard level an OWS are just different hues of the same sh*t brown aftermath of the tail end of a very large and very old business plan.

If you're not an attorney, a broker, a politician, IT R&D, a good cook or a hooker, start packing up the plantation. Cause the money already did.

The rust belt is f*cked because there's no reason for it not to be. American cars and appliances were hot sh*t for a while. Now, they're just waiting for it to work up a nice rot to the point where Monsanto will buy it for 10.00 and some IOUs and farm it again. For Freedom™.

There's a billion plus strong market that can't wait to immerse themselves in commerce culture and buy all the crap we already have three of. We're not the cool kid on the block anymore.

Smell the coffee, folks. You can put quarters in this motherf*cker until you get callouses, but the game isn't just over, it's unplugged.

When I was back in DC for a conference last year, I had just started up the escalator at Dupont Circle when some poor sap pitched face-first down the down side. The guy behind him immediately went after him to try to help, and I ran back down my side to get to him (most awkward run in my life).

His face was so messed up, like broken eye socket kind of messed up with these gouges from the escalator step edges. Some frat boys were all "Yo, let the paramedics know his tooth is stuck in this step." I went and pried it out myself and wrapped it in tissue because I didn't want people stepping on it.

Besides me and the guy who helped him off the escalator (who then had to run to catch his train), only one other guy stopped to help. He called 911 while I sat with the man that fell and tried to keep him from wandering off by talking to him about anything I could think of and keep pressure on the worst gouges.

Anyway, my whole point of this story is that it was this utterly bizarre, surreal thing to watch droves of people stream by without a second thought to it while the poor sap bled all over. One older man stopped with this pained look on his face, like he wanted to help, but his wife pulled him away, telling him it was being handled. But otherwise, it was like nobody even saw him.

Just so surreal.

If somebody looks like they need help and you might be able to give it, please, please don't ignore them like the article. You don't ever want to be in his shoes like that.

/The guy who called 911 and I both waited for the paramedics to come, and when they finally showed up (somebody else had fallen at the top of the escalator, too, at the same time, even though it wasn't even running), we said thank you to each other before finally leaving.
//I never got the last name of the guy that fell. I still wonder what happened to him. I hope he's okay, wherever he is.

Nobody cares that more civilians are dying for the US in Iraq and Afghanistan then military. They don't know and they don't care.

More people are realizing the fact that they aren't dying for "the US", they are dying for politicians egos and 50 years of misguided foreign policy that works against the interests of the average US citizen.

Too bad it's not the leaders who bear the brunt of their bad decisions.

They're also dying voluntarily for up to three times the pay of a normal soldier. Tell me again why I should care?
