(LA Times)   TSA once again captures a dangerous terrorist. Just kidding. They left a metal detector unmanned and had to shut down a terminal   (latimesblogs.latimes.com) divider line 46

if that happened in the private sector, the only retraining you'd get is how to apply for unemployment

hooray. tax dollars at work (but not really working)

They tracked down the 5 people who got through.. but what about the 10oz package of toothpaste they might have planted somewhere in the meantime ZOMG!

I want a TSA job. Unless you steal from passengers it doesn't matter how much you fark up - you'll just be temporarily reassigned and given additional training.

The only downside is your popularity with the public.

2012-02-26 08:08:34 PM
it's not like anyone from sacramento really needs to get anywhere

2012-02-26 08:09:07 PM
As a result of the incident, officials said, two TSA officers have been removed from screening duties and are to undergo additional training.

TSA likes to portray itself as a life-or-death matter. If someone had done this in a TRULY life-or-death position, like say, the pilots, you can be damn sure "additional training" is not what they would be facing.

I think at any given time about half of TSA is in "additional training".

2012-02-26 08:12:26 PM
How did five people get through in the minute it was unattended? They would have to have been right up there in line when both agents went on walk-about. At which point in time, how do they get so far into the terminal that it takes cops and everybody else to hunt them down?

Seems pretty fisht to me.

Almadot is right, what was abandoned on the other side of the checkpoint by the passengers?

NOTHING will happen to them??

It's like the police; if a coupla boys in blue accidentally shoot a few unarmed kids because one of them pulls out a suspicious cellphone, they are temporarily reassigned to desk duty. Wow. I'm sure a lot of them would like the opportunity to get off the streets for a bit.

2012-02-26 08:26:43 PM
Why don't they just leave them on 24-7 and no way to get past them, only going thru them?

/problem solved(?)

This is what our government money goes to another bureaucratic incompetent government agency. I'm sooooooooooooo happy to pay thousands in federal taxes a year.

They took my unopened Monster drink yesterday. It's my own fault though, I forgot it was packed in my carry-on. I asked if I could chug it and she said yes, but I'll have to get to the back of the line....in Orlando....after waiting 20 minutes to have my monster drink taken.

/she was very nice about it. Yay TSA.

I used to think that the TSA and their shenanigans were universally reviled. Then one day my brother, whom I consider to be an intelligent person, showed me his slides from a presentation he had done on the technology of the backscatter machines. When I asked him how many terrorists the TSA had caught he admitted to not knowing if they had ever caught one. His entire argument in favor of these 6-figure-per-unit money pits was that "THERE ARE TERRORISTS AND THEY'RE TRYING TO KILL US!" Apparently that somehow justifies cutting a $70,000,000 check to the bungling morons that plague our airports.

/He wouldn't even consider my suggestion that we could get 50+ bomb-sniffing dogs for the price of one backscatter machine
//At least you would get some quality lulz out of posting a 50 dog army at every airport checkpoint
///Plus people might finally grasp how enormous the waste of resources on the TSA is when confronted with battalions of dogs patrolling every airport

I think the only thing the TSA has caught so far is flack from the public. Although there are some very happy people out there pigging out on their fat budget.

Not to mention all the 9 year old ass they can grope and a shopping cart in every checked bag. These people are thieves and terrorists and if we don't make the government dismantle this clusterf*ck, you can kiss driving 50 miles without "ze proper papers" and soon. Feel free to cut and paste and date this so you can prove me wrong later.

Now now. They've stopped literally billions of terrorists who never got on the plane! All those terrorists who saw those TSA agents and their gates and changed their minds at the last minute! All those carefully planned and masterminded plots that were foiled at the last second because some dipshiat was standing there looking for nail scissors and shampoo.

If anyone comes posting here and tries to tell me that they've stopped ANYBODY by their presence...I will track them down and cockpunch them at once.

tsx11: if that happened in the private sector, the only retraining you'd get is how to apply for unemployment

Nonsense. In my years at a Fortune 500 company I have seen people repeatedly screw up with nothing more than a slap on the wrist. The difference is that it isn't splashed all over the news like when the TSA makes a mistake.

If we accepted the same percentage of death in air travel that we do on the roads, we'd lose at least a couple full jumbo jets every year. Psychology is funny.

I do not understand all this hatred towards the TSA? How many terrorists have made it past the TSA to hijack planes? ZERO! They are doing their job, and doing it extremely well!

You can just tell people who ask that you're a child molester. Much more popular than TSA and technically, you're not lying.

Last time I went through an airport, I got in a line without the body scanner.
By the time I got up in line, they began using the body scanner. Crap.

"I'd like to opt out." I said calmly to the TSA dude. He said 'We Got an Opt Out',
and I turned to see another TSA agent frown at me. Cute. Anyhow at that point,
they sent me AROUND THE METAL DETECTOR, and patted me down.

No metal detection when you opt out.
Seems RETARDED to me, as I had no problem with using the metal detector.

I was going to ask the guy who patted me down what was up with that,
but questioning security procedures seems a curious thing, so I guessed they would hold me for awhile at security and find out why I am so curious- while I miss my flight.

I smell sarcasm here.

Because if you're serious, you're deluded far beyond redemption. TSA is as horrible as agency as we've got.

It's not really about safety. It's about enforcing rules. That's why they had to track down five people to process them. It's not like they can claim they believe one of them was terrorist that had been waiting in the screening area for the chance to be one of five people who didn't get screened that month.

The locking cabin doors and letting the airlines/customer choose if they want the security of having all passengers pat-down at the gates would be my recommendation. See how long before airlines with pat downs are not selling tickets.

2012-02-27 01:44:21 AM
just more psyops. so now they can shut down a terminal to round up 5 people. 5 normal american citizens. to the detriment of how many more? funny that the TSA has NOT CAUGHT A SINGLE TERRORIST since they were created after 9/11. but americans just continue to take it.

I used to fly fairly often. I stopped in 2002, and I really thought it would have a bigger impact on my life than it has turned out to have. 10 years later and I've still never had a TSA agent grope me. Not sure how I've survived.

I was going to ask if there was even one person in the country who respected the TSA, including the agents themselves, but I see my question answered already. Sadly.

Everyone screws up, it's a fact of life. The constant derp of "in the private sector, this would never happen" from Randians and Paultards gets pretty tiring, when there's a billion documents available to anyone willing to look proving how much the human race likes to screw up (and pretend it didn't happen or was someone else's fault).
