Bummer. I'm almost banking on it being rained out again tomorrow, since I'll be able to follow it Tuesday. We'll have to see, I guess.

donnielove: Stretch_8: Obscene_CNN: WhyteRaven74: Obscene_CNN: Damn shame NASCAR can't man up and run in the rain. Formula 1 does it.

NASCAR will run in the rain on a road course. Formula 1 never races on ovals.

like a banked oval makes it harder to race in the rain? A banked track doesn't have water pool into puddles.

Biggest key is F1 has so much more downforce to keep them on the road.

And didn't F1 try to finish out a race on a wet oval last year, despite the drivers screaming that it wasn't possible? And didn't that end with a multi-car crash under caution?

Just like baseball games, only delay it after you get a decent amount of food and beverage sales (plus advertising money) out of a massive delay.

Obscene_CNN: puffy999: Obscene_CNN: Goodyear already makes more tires than they use each year. Do you think they save them for the next year? Nope they make a new batch each year. They could do the same for rain tires.

For what purpose?

It's a waste of money for something that you, and only a very few others, seem to want. NOBODY WANTS RACES IN THE RAIN.

It would cast far less than 4 hours of rain delay on network TV. And if they did race we would be talking about the race instead of this.

Did you watch the Canadian Grand Prix last year?

Is that new? I was in American Samoa for almost all of the 2009 and 2010 seasons, and I would try to find streams of MRN/PRN online to hear the race. A solid 3/4 of the affiliate websites wouldn't be carrying it; they'd have a loop of commercials or music instead. Maybe they have/had to pay extra to stream it.

WhyteRaven74: Obscene_CNN: Formula one runs on rain tires on a flat track where the forces to push you into the wall are much greater.

At Daytona the cars are doing about 182 in the turns. A lot of F1 turns has the cars under 100 mph, when the track is wet the number of turns seeing 100 mph is even smaller. And even in those turns seeing triple digit speeds in the rain, the speeds are a good few miles an hour slower than in the dry. Keep in mind F1 cars don't depend on the mechanical grip of the tires in turns anywhere near as much as NASCAR car s do. Whole thing with an F1 car on a wet turn is to be very gentle on the gas, make sure you're pointed forward down the track before you push down on the gas pedal some more. The aerodynamics will keep you going through the turn as long as you don't come into the turn too fast and have to hit the brakes too hard too late or crank the steering wheel too hard. Oh yeah, owing to the smaller contact patch due to the treads, you have to brake a bit earlier than you would using slicks on a dry track

I agree with most of what you said.

The only thing I'd like to add is this: Flying though Eau Rouge flat-out in the dry in mind-bending. Doing it nearly flat-out in the wet is insane. (new window)

Seeing NASCAR live is a much different experience than on TV. Those folks racing on the oval track are really on the edge for traction most of the time. The cars literally are sliding in those turns. Televison does not convey this well.

As its been stated time and time again, these cars just can't handle ovals in the rain. Road courses in the rain, however:
