DeWayne Mann: I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet.

I think pitchers are the only position players that can get away with not running out a ground ball.

james3000gore: You can't walk the #8 hitter in the third with two outs. Even if the pitcher is working a no-hitter, the #8 hitter would be going up to bat with only one out.

What?

How about you think about the situation a bit more. Perhaps the score is something other than 0-0?

Them or crazy left fielders.

Who was the player who after hitting a ball to left field, was thrown out at first base?

Sean Casey I think.

Sean Casey, but that was sort of a weird situation. He thought that the 3rd baseman had caught it (and, in fact, it went down as 5-7-3) and so walked back to the dugout.

There have been at least 6 9-3 putouts, though.

Just because I'm bored, I have found a game involving an intentional walk to the 8 hitter in the third with 2 outs.

Marcus Giles: Clearly a witch.

(Also, he did the same thing in the first, fifth & eighth innings. Boy, he must've been really FEARED, Jim Rice style)

Actually, in that game Giles had a IBB in the 1st and 3rd. In the 5th, he walked on 6 pitches, so Penny was not pitching around him. He also walked in the 8th on 5 pitches, but a PH came up after him so I doubt he was pitched around in that instance either.

Also, after the IBB in the 3rd, the pitcher hit an RBI single and advanced to 2nd on the throw. Obviously an easy out.

What definition of pitching around are you using?

You don't really intentionally walk people when you're already down by 8 runs. Seems pretty likely that they started out pitching around him, hoping he'll make light contact, but then put him on semi-intentionally.

DaJesus: Also, after the IBB in the 3rd, the pitcher hit an RBI single and advanced to 2nd on the throw. Obviously an easy out.

During my somewhat random search (I looked for the most walks by a number 8 hitter) I found a guy who walked with ONE out in the 3rd (and his team already up by 4 runs or so)...and then the pitcher hit a grand slam.

Some of you calling NL Pitchers more complete players should know these guys didn't even pick up a bat in the minor leagues. And the idea for the DH cam in 1906 from Connie Mack,, at least publicly, there were other before him that suggested it. So for over 100 years, people have wanted to see pitchers swing like girls.

Actually, it was his first EVER...but who's counting?

fark THE DH! THE FACT THAT SOME FATASS (althOugh do understand that many teams use it as a tool to give players a day off of fielding) IS ALLOWED TO PLAY BECAUSE HE CAN WAVE A STICK AROUND BUT CAN'T RUN FOR HIS LIFE IS RIDICULOUS!

There's no way the union would give up the DH. Or rather, it would take such a large concession that I can't even imagine what it would be. $80million salary floor, no ceiling (with some sort of yearly increase)? Free agency after 4 years?

You're talking the loss of full time jobs (and the salaries that go with) for 15 players.

On the other hand, adding the DH to the NL...well, I think you see where I'm going with this.

So, one way or another isn't quite accurate. The NL will go to the DH, it's just a question of when.

LOL yeah, sure you are. I bet you're also looking forward to a season without Pujols, right?

Looking forward to this season without Pujols? I'll miss his bat this year, certainly, probably the next 3 for that matter.

Looking forward to the next decade without him? You bet your farking ass I am. Anaheim is more than welcome to our sloppy seconds for the length and cost they are paying for him. Granted they can afford to piss all that money away with their new TV contract, but St. Louis sure as hell couldn't have.

For the record, I'll miss LaRussa this year more than I'll miss Pujols. And I think the Cards will still probably win the Central, though Braun's suspension being upheld would have helped make that more likely. And no, I don't think the Reds can win due to the Dusty Baker EffectTM.

Also gay: aluminum bats, domes, turf, $200m payrolls, $20m payrolls, infield fly rule, 300' fences, the wildcard, the All-Star game 'counting' and the 'fake to 3rd throw to first' pick off move.

One of the D-Backs pitchers totally pulled that off last year, the dude nearly halfway to second, but because it never works he didn't throw it and the guy got back to the bag.

Ohhhh... is it that obvious? Sorry 'bout that. Yes... I understand. I was making a little joke at my expense about how I'm a grumpy old SOB about "new" baseball rules. I'll try harder next time.

That said... I DO have a way to completely resurrect baseball and bring it to the forefront of American sports. One simple rule change will increase attendance and viewer ship exponentially. It's quite simple:

The defense can throw the ball at a runner to "tag" him out.

I'd buy season tickets again for SURE.

I'd add the "in the vicinity" at 2nd base when turning a double play where the defender doesn't actually have to touch the bag. And the changing strike zone on 3 - 0 or 0 -2 counts. And instant replay. And the All-Star Game determining home field advantage.

Here's the thing: the other 8 players don't have to be able to hit to make up for that, because pitchers bat for both teams. Therefore, each team has a (most-likely) weak-hitting pitcher in the lineup and scores fewer runs than it might otherwise. If winning the game required scoring, say, a minimum of 5 runs, your point would be valid. But since winning only requires scoring more than the other team, and each team has the same disadvantage/weakness, saying the other 8 batters have to be "stronger" than the top 8 batters in an AL lineup isn't really true.

If you wanna hit, you play the field.

Works for little league, works for the pros.

I don't care that a DH hits better than a pitcher. I don't care that a typical AL 9-hole hitter hits better than a pitcher.

I have less disdain for pitchers who don't hit (NL teams carry at least six of those, AL teams carry 11-12) and more for lazy old bags who fiddle-fart at the plate then head to the clubhouse for a 25-minute binge session before they're asked to do their job again.

/Reds win the Central

larrycot: He wouldn't have the balls to bean anyone if he had to stand in a batter's box.

If he throws at your best hitter you would retaliate by throwing at him (the pitcher, the number 9 hitter, generally the easiest out in the lineup)? Getting 27 outs is all that matters.

2012-02-26 12:23:16 AM
desertgeek: Here's the thing:

NL players have to be more complete players because of the pitcher hitting. AL teams can just hide a offensively weak/defensively strong player in their lineup and surround him with a DH and a bunch of other players. But in the NL, you know who the weak hitter is most of the time: the pitcher. So the other 8 players have to be able to hit to make up for that.

Also, if the NL pitcher beans someone in the 1st inning; he can't hide out on the bench like the AL pitcher can. He has to step into that batters box and face the music himself, if the other team wants to wait for that.

Anyway, why do you think Pujols and Fielder went to the AL? So that they could extend their careers as lazy DHs like Ortiz and Edgar Martinez did.

Sorry, I like my baseball players to not be lazy and to have some guts.

Fielder definitely has guts.

Oh come on. Uecker was a 200 hitter. He was better than many pitchers.
Of course, the only reason he was in the Majors for 6 years was because
he was the only catcher who could "try" to catch Phil Niekro's crazy pitches.

From his book, "Catcher in the wry" he admitted he couldn't catch 'em.
He just didn't let them go by him.

Funny book, funny man. Good baseball lore from a time gone by
(compared to today)

Him as Harry Doyle in Major league (look close during the movie: you will see the
scoreboard with WTMJ on it. Milwaukee tv station. Old County Stadium in Milwaukee (where it was filmed)

And, he was the old gray haired dad on Mr. Belvidere. And hosted the tonight show.

AND, he's STILL the Brewers broadcaster. Best radio voice around. Growing up in WI,
whatever you were doing, if the Brewers were on, there's Uke. Camping. Family events.
Tailgating in old County Stadium. Driving. On a radio ANYWHERE, he was there.

Best. Announcer. Evar.

And funny as hell. Funnier than Max McGee doing Packer games. Look up the comments he made
about being in the hotel in Philly/Pittsburg (cant remember which) during the "furry" convention.
Classic Uke.

Hope he comes to the A's spring training this year. I'm working there for Aramark.
Should be FUN!!

Last year here in L.A., Kershaw and Billingsley had a bet going on who could get more hits after growing tired of the NL wuss-out mentality. Personally, I think the DH rule is a joke. If you can't swing a bat, you shouldn't be playing baseball...
