It's a retelling of Space Seed. But unlike TOS where Kirk was born and breed officer who was raised proper and Spock embraced his Vulcan heritage over his humanity, we have an already battle worn Kirk who was raised in adversity and Spock who is far more emotional.

They find the Botany Bay only this time it ends a lot more bloody the first go around.

No, Spock is merely dealing with one of Uhura's Evil Exs. The Orion Room-mate is next up.

I've read that there will be no Khan in this one.

That's Star Wars.... Only one movie was about revenge.

See Star Trek II Was about Revenge.
Then Star Trek III was about Klingons getting even for genisis Genisis.
Then Star Trek IV was about Whales getting revenge on humanity. (They sent a message back to bring the fleet to destroy earth)
Star Trek V Was Shatners Revenge against Nimoy and fandom
Star Trek VI Was Kirks revenge against the Kilingons/Federation cold war. Who were getting revenge for dead ambasador.

Okay, you may have something there.

Picard was all revengy against the Borg in First Contact. He even quoted Moby Dick yet again. And the guy in Nemesis wanted revenge against Picard. The last movie, the Romulan wanted revenge against Spock and the Federation in general. And Insurrection, I don't know, they were pissed about something.

Unless you mean brilliant as a pun, or are just trolling, you've got to be insane. I enjoyed the movie, despite its plot flaws, but the lens flare was just unnecessary and freakin' annoying. It serves no purpose other than to let Abrams say, "Ooooo, isn't that neat??"

I have to agree there. Maybe the lens flare biatching is played out but it really was annoying n the film.

Insurection had the former inhabitants of "Forever Young" planet trying to get revenge on the other colonist.

And Of course Generations Maclcom Mcdowel getting revenge sparky string of space.

I noticed a lot of things about the movie. The fact that Chris Pine was great as Kirk, that Eric Bana is a ham sandwich, and that even as Spock Zachary Quinto still exudes menace.

The thing I never noticed in the theater was an overabundance of lens flare. It quite frankly never occurred that I SHOULD find it a problem until I saw people on the internet biatching about it. Since then, I've gone back and re-watched it numerous times, and I STILL have yet to see what all the goddamn fuss was about. So no, not trolling, and no, not a pun, just my blunt but honest opinion.

I was too busy complaining about the lack of shirtless Kirk to notice the lens flare.

And the lack of pantsless Spock.

Nor did I see any sign of Chekov "pulling a Klingon train", Jason, you lying biatch.

FTA: "Vulcan death grip". Really, sentence the writer to watching all of TOS.
Unfortunately, by bringing in the Romulans in the first movie, they probably blew off remaking TOS "Balance of Terror", a pretty good adaptation of "The Enemy Below" (1957).

Is this a flashback to 1981? Star Trek II came out in 1982 and is still the best Trek movie made. I am not that interested in this new one. What is the actual number again? (not 2)

The only flaw with the last movie is that the new Kirk is a douche.

in insurrection a race split in two when a group of upstarts got exiled. they came back with a vengeance for the regenerative pixie dust.

I thoroughly enjoyed the remake, I really and truly did, but for anyone who says the lens flare wasn't an issue, I have a drinking game for you. Get some low alcohol content beer and take a sip for every scene with a lens flare.

Don't drink anything over 4.3% and drink for scenes not individual flares, otherwise you will be dead.

Looks like this is #12. They probably consulted Microsoft's marketing department on how to best keep their version numbering consistent.

Yeah, they were squatting on a planet that was a fountain of youth and they wouldn't share it but they were the good guys for some reason.

And yeah, the lens flares were obnoxious. The new bridge was a great design but you could't see it.

I speculate that Uhura with a phaser is going to be my new desktop wallpaper.

2012-02-24 08:34:51 PM
I like the first one... right up until the point I started thinking about it. I don't know why. I've never tried to analyze any Star Trek movie or show I've seen. But, for some reason, I started thinking about this one and the enormous gaping plot holes completely ruined everything else for me.

She died. It's funny how everyone overlooks that part. Nearly all the cadets and officers you saw at the academy died. I would hope that plays an important part in the next story. It would be poor story telling if the next story does not go over any of the ramifications of an entire planet being destroyed, a species almost wiped out, and a good chunk of Starfleets new cadets dying.

Splinshints: / if you can go back in time, why the fark wouldn't you just take care of the problem you failed to resolve in the first place you farking asshole!?

That was the problem in Generations. And the one with the Borg...time travel pretty much is always stupid in Star Trek. Except the episode where they had to kill Joan Collins.

2012-02-24 08:44:11 PM
The weirdest thing I see in all of this Star Trek speculation is how much effort people put into dragging old Trek into the mix. It's like, if Abrams came up with a plot entirely unrelated to the original material, Trekkies' heads would explode.

I've seen so many articles about Kahn and the Space Seed episode (as relates to this second movie), but I don't get why people want that. What if the new Trek never addresses Kahn at all?

Constantly trying to shoehorn old Trek into the speculation is the kind of thinking that makes Hollywood keep pumping out sh*tty non-stop remakes in the first place. They think all people want is for them to regurgitate Space Seed/Wrath of Kahn all over again.

Well we are talking about a creative team that took one of the largest science fiction universes committed to film and decided to go back to the Kirk/Spock well. We're not dealing with the most creative people in the world, so you can't blame people for assuming that they're going to shoot for the Khan thing again.
