My mom is one of the weird ones (Bx), but I have no idea what I am.

2012-02-24 03:47:11 PM
My blood is the type that drips on my shoes in a red color after I stick my hand in a wood chipper.

I think. Just a minute, I'll go find out. BRB.

Beerguy: Mine is O+, I know this because it says so on my dog tags.

I can't give blood because I was stationed in Germany in the 80's. No one has ever been able to give me a good answer as to why.

I was in Germany in the 80s too. It was because there is a very, very slight chance of catching mad cow since there were a few cases back then.

I think it's ridiculous that 30 years later MOOOOOO! the ban is still in effect when there hasn't been FARKING MOOO! any cases.

O- , but also banned for life due to being stationed in Germany in the late 80s.

Walker: I don't know my blood type....and no one will tell me. I give blood a lot at the doctor's office for tests (NO I DON'T HAVE THE AIDS!) and I always ask "Can you tell me my blood type" and they say no.

I've also had a good deal of testing done and donated blood several times, and the response I got from the lady at the red cross was "common." I only found out I was A+ from the little band on my wrist when I was in the hospital with the numbers of two bags that were in reserve for me if needed.

2012-02-24 03:50:21 PM
Also O+, and NN, IIRC, but that was like 12 years ago and I might remember wrong. All I know was my lab class was all screwed up. Something like 75% of the population is supposed to be MN and in my class it was 30%.

Just a request for all you thinking about donating: DO IT!!!!!!
You would be amazed at the number of blood products used in trauma situations.
Every bit helps.

That's strange. That should be easily obtainable information. Donate if you're able, you'll find out then.

Rev. Skarekroe: I'm O-, which means the freaking Red Cross calls me daily begging for a donation.

Same. Canadian Blood Services comes up as 'Dracula' on my call display.

I'm also negative for exposure to some virus (whose name eludes me) that people commonly contract in childhood and is potentially dangerous to infants. So they really, really like to see me donate. I love to do it, potentially saving the life of a baby really makes you feel like you've done something with your day.

O+ and also negative for that same virus. I am in a 6 month deferral for having honestly answered one of their questions (I am now on a beta blocker for intermittent tachycardia). I think I am close to my 5th gallon.

Hemolymph or ichor?

So my question is why don't they pay for blood. They pay for plasma. I'm o-, you would think my blood would be worth something (hey, I live in a hyper capitalistic society, sue me)

Cytomegalovirus- CMV. I'm CMV neg too; which makes my mundane A Pos blood more useful, I guess- I have collapsing veins, and about half the time I donate, it goes awry, but they will keep calling. And I'll keep trying, and bruising.

Fark. I inverted the - and + signs. "As far as I know, a Duffy- person can receive Duffy+ blood and not have any life-threatening (or even detectable) immune response from the Duffy+ proteins" is what I meant to say. (Medical Farkers who do this stuff for a living, feel free to whip me, beat me, and make me feel cheap....)

2012-02-24 03:53:21 PM
Type O- here also

I'm not allowed to give blood though, I popped positive for Hep B when they initially screened my blood. On further testing they concluded that I don't actually have it. When you are a child and you get those Hep B vaccinations apparently it has a chance to stick with you for life and make you show as positive on screening tests

Cytomegalovirus. It's a relative of Herpes that most people have, but it doesn't affect people with a healthy immune system other than an occasional cold sore. Unfortunately it will go nuts in anyone with a compromised immune system such as infants, AIDS patients and people undergoing chemo. So yeah, Red Cross loves you.

O+ CMV- 10+ gallons, can't give until April because I went through New Dehli last year.

O-, 2 gallon donor as of a couple months ago. I look like I might have been an IV drug user at some point, I have so many divots in my inner arms/elbow pits.

A couple years back, the DoD marrow registry called me to say I was a near perfect match for someone (I'd forgotten I'd even signed up for it years ago when donating on base). They sent me an extensive package about the marrow donation process (which I started to read but it scared me so I stopped reading for fear it would make me not want to donate), and scheduled me to go to the nearest military hospital, where they drew 12 tubes of blood and Fed Exed them to Walter Reed. A couple weeks went by and I didn't hear anything so I called. They said that I was a perfect match but the recipient had to be in good enough shape to undergo the procedure. I was asked to stand by and they'd contact me when the time was right. I never heard from them again. It saddened me.

I'm O+ and have my two gallon pin, well on my way to three gallons. In the past couple years though, I have hardly donated at all because I have to get a babysitter or go when my husband is around to watch our son.

If there was a donation center with even a rudimentary child care area where someone would look after my toddler for an hour while I donated and drank my bottle of water, I'd go back to the every six weeks schedule.

lewismarktwo: YOU do not HAVE AIDS!

LOL. People who run those things seem to be clueless about those things.

I recall when my girlfriend joined the Peace Corps, I took her to the hospital to get the required AIDS test (it was the recommended local place to go). This was 1990. I thought it was a funny deal, boyfriend bringing his girl to get an AIDS test, but they kind of freaked out and made her sign these forms and asked her a bunch of questions. It was really an uncomfortable scene, like they were seriously trying to discourage her from getting the test. So I got mad. farkers should have been encouraging people to get tested, and not treating a woman getting one as a job requirement like she was a hooker or heroin addict or something.

The doctor probably isn't routinely doing blood-type tests, just sending your blood off for whatever testing is you need. If you want a free blood typing, go donate blood. They'll tell you your type, give you a free suite of STD tests, and throw in a cholesterol test.

Tax Boy: Blue.

Of course we all know that the people who invented the idea of "blue blood" did not really believe that aristocracy had blood that was blue in color. It referred to the fact that people with fairer complexion had more visible veins, so that supposedly showed that their heritage was lily-white, with none of that moorish shenanigans mixed in.

Could be worse. I have blood type AB+ which is relatively rare (about 3% of the population), but I'm barred from giving blood in my home province because since 1980 I have spent too much time in the UK and Europe in general.

I give double red donations when I can. The machine takes the blood, separates the plasma and pumps it back into you. It's room temp when it goes back, so it feels cold entering your system. I can feel the cold blood working its way down my arm and into my chest. Really feels strange when it spreads up the neck and into my mouth and around my eyes.

Someone up thread mentioned drinking after donating. Tried it once and made me sick as a dog. Never again.

maybe you should read the article before spouting an statement debunked in the article.

While the homosexual population may have a higher rate of HIV infection, they are also much more likely to know about their infection status and likely choose to or not to donate blood according.

Also, there are lots more black people than gay people. Assuming only a fraction of black people donate blood, they comprise a much larger segment of the population and therefore constitute a higher risk of donating "tainted" blood.

/blood donation eligibility should be based on individual factors, not on exclusion based on "group" status

This cracks me up! Mine comes up as Vampires. Oneg as well. Also I am supposedly immune to small pox.

I would donate more but it really drags me down. I'm out for at least 2 days after.

You don't have to donate whole blood all of the time. I give every two weeks and they strip out the platelets (I can give double doses) and every two months they still take the red cells. It takes a hell of a lot longer to give this way but they get more usable parts from apheresis than regular donation.
