Yeah, it's funny that Obama doesn't need that much money to win against a group of re-re.

And yet, none of the GOP contenders have a hope in hell of defeating Obama.

An unfunny comedian has that kind of money? Wow. How many families could have been fed with that?

I never understood anything but token $ for any politician.

submittard - are you seriously proud that your party requires massive donations by the country's elite billionaires while the democrats do it from actual working people giving less than $250 a pop?

His online special last night was brilliant. Funny, and completely spot-on.

"Ooo...look at the GOP shaking in their boots...with laughter "

You're going to look pretty silly when the final fundraising numbers are announced later this year. Obama is a fundarising machine. Especially with the prospect of someone like Santorum becoming president.

2012-02-24 09:55:15 AM
Technically speaking, he's not running against anyone yet.

2012-02-24 09:58:38 AM
That's his SuperPAC, what's his campaign have?

2012-02-24 10:05:40 AM
He has a quarter of a billion raised so far in the official campaign contributions. Which actually depresses me now that I think about it. A quarter of a billion to hold a political office.

A sad state of affairs, now compounded by Citizens United.

FTFA: a report filed this week to the Federal Election Committee show that the group only raised $58,815 in January

First: That's the pro-Obama super PAC, not the Obama campaign itself.
Second: I'm pretty sure that's saying that the group raised $58k in January, not in total.

Finally, the idea that the Republicans are laughing in superior bravado and feeling very confident in their chances is absurd on its face. I'm not saying Obama has it all locked down by any means, but I don't think anyone can seriously say that the GOP is feelin' strong right now.

People who can afford to donate $1 million to a Super Pac have too much money, and their priorities are farked up.

Really? You can't think of any better way to spend $1 million?

It really all boils down to one simple fact... Greed is considered a virtue by many people in this country and those people have an interest in making sure their needs are taken care of before the needs of the general public.

If gas goes up to $4.50 a gallon, I'm not going to blame Obama because that would be 100% stupid. Unless we socialize the gas companies the President has no control over what they charge for oil.

Yes, because the American public is just not smart enough to see that gas prices are affected by MANY market forces. Most of which the President has no control over. And I'm sure they will be just fine with oil companies making breaking new records in profit because of rising prices.

The GOP's new motto should be, "Vote for us, because we know you are just too stupid to do otherwise."

Somehow I suspect there is some serious money laundering going on that makes such a donation a smart investment independent of Newt's success.

YUP. And bringing up Keystone XL won't help either---that wouldn't have made a lick of difference to gasoline prices at the pump for anyone. At this point we all know to blame the oil companies and commodity traders/speculators for this sort of shiat.

Besides, at this point, most Americans can read the writing on the wall. "Drill baby drill" was only going to take us so far. At this point our realistic options are to go for broke with drilling and feed our addiction for an extra 5-10 years, OR we can start working on alternative solutions now. I don't get upset when efforts at finding alternative energy sources fail----at least this administration is TRYING to do the right thing on energy policy, which is more than can be said of really any predecessor (to include Dems).

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Maher hasn't been funny since Politically Incorrect. He's drifted into old, angry George Carlin territory.

I've said for months that anyone who tallied all of the money spent on the election cycle, they could use that number as the single driving force to push for serious campaign finance reform. "Our nation, huge debt, no jobs... spent humpty-bajillion dollars on getting elected. Let's knock that shiat off, kay, America?"

I think Obama should continue collecting campaign funds, and then once he has a huge amount of cash on hand, instead of campaigning with it, he should call a press conference, and tell the world "Hey, I have a few hundred million dollars here that I am now going to invest in infrastructure, feeding the poor, helping struggling businesses, and the like. Let the GOP waste their campaign funds on commercials and bus tours, I'm putting this money where it will do some actual good." If he timed it right, he'd win by the largest margin in the history of our country.

And since I'm already wishing for the impossible, I want a pony.
