Actually, this is an old Irish tradition called "Last Call." You steal the body from the funeral home or you just take him from the wake, you take him down and park it in what was his regular pub, put a drink in front of him, and everyone gets drunk.
The tradition is referenced in the Blake Edwards movie S.O.B. and in the HBO series The Wire.
My dad did it to a mate of his when sometime in the early 1950s or so in a pub in the Irish part of Chicago where it was not an uncommon practice.
Of course you always returned the body from where you got it.
