AJ can't possibly be the good kid. The good kid wouldn't do that in the obit.

The siblings agreed their older brother, Peter Anello, cut himself off from the family 25 years ago.

i guess he was the smart one.

reminds me of a Chevy Chase movie where the lady that owned the house before him buried her husband and donkey in the backyard to get the last word. For in that town the last word meant everything.

"Your husband didn't die, lady! He's hiding!"

First thing that came to mind when reading TFA. Peter's the lucky one.

"A.J." better hope he doesn't die before his other siblings if he cares at all about a decent remembrance. Otherwise I can imagine no obit (is that allowed?) and probably the worst funeral. I'd laugh if the sister bothered to pay to have him cremated so she could do something like flush the ashes or just spread them in a dumpster.

I'm willing to bet that AJ is a mama's boy, while Ninfa and Peter wisely cut off relations at the first oppertunity.

If subby had used the Florida tag I wouldn't have had to check to see if it was my father-in-law, A.J. Sounds just like him. And there's a restaurant near him called Ninfa's.

Seems like it's probably true.
Hypothesis: The care-giver handled everything at the end, and the other sibs ignored their dying mother. So the care giver took care of the obit too. If they had been there helping out, this would not have happened.

Seems likely. My Oxycontin addicted brother refused to come 20 miles to see Dad when Dad was dying.

If I had to place a bet, I'd say Peter is the only sane one in that family. No bickering over misappropriated social security money, no aggrieved quotes for the paper, no whining alternative obituaries, just walked off twenty-five years ago and can't even be reached for comment. That's the way to treat toxic families.

I once made an advice thread in TFD about what to do with my toxic family - You know what the common theme of the thread is?
1) Man up, sissy boy
and
2) Family is everything, you never know their worth

Asking for advice from TFD is like asking for advice from a drunk, insane drill instructor posing as a therapist - that pees you in the end since he thinks you're not considering his ill-thought advice.

Having seen what my in-laws' families of origin did (and are still doing) to them, I can safely say that those are two things I'll never say. I wish to God they had emulated "son Peter" and just cut those people off thirty years ago.

/in-laws are in their mid-sixties
//yes, their parents are all still alive. And still giving them shiat about everything.

Come the night, come the night
All the men want to fuss and fight
But not me, not me
`Cause that's not what I want to be
Cause I'm Mama's little boy

Mom tells me everything she sees
Well it may scare you, but it don't scare me
Cause I'm Mama's little boy
I like what I want to see

All day long she watches her dancing sons
Come the night she picks the tallest one
But I'm Mama's little boy
I've nothing to hide

All the Gods, the Gods of the sun
They're just bastards sons
Daddy, Daddy, come and see
The onslaught of insanity
Cause I'm Mama's little boy
And I'm mad

There's a place where I want to be
And it's dark there, there's nothing to see
And you're alone, there's nothing you can do
Something's coming, something's coming to you
You are- you don't know where you are
You are- you don't know who you are
You are- you don't know what you are
You are helpless, you are helpless
That's where I want to be, there's where I want to be
Cause I'm Mama's little boy
I feel, I can feel
Joy

Thanks to Nomeansno for that little bit of Oedipal Complex. As for the article, I know that kids can be bastards, but I also know that parents can be bastards. Maybe the kids stole from her, maybe the mom felt her kids were stealing from her, but there's no reason to put this in an obituary. These issues should be taken care of within the family, not splayed out in front of the entire internet world. Kid sounds like a mama's boy. Wouldn't be surprised if we see a story in the next few years with an Ed Gein, or Norman Bates swing to it regarding this guy.

You can call him A, or you can call him J, or you can call him Asswipe, or you can call him Jagoff, but you doesn't have to call him Johnson.

CSB: in my youth I briefly worked as an obit taker in the classified ad dept of the Chicago Sun Times. I can assure you that anyone taking an obit like that would have been fired if it actually published. Also I met Roger Ebert and Ann Landers.

2012-02-24 09:44:56 AM
Why would a paper, especially one as professional as the TBT, publish an obituary which insults people and is arguably defamatory?

On the other hand, bravo for this guy for inviting questions of undue influence over the will.
