Oh Danica. Damn it Jr had a real good chance.

2012-02-23 03:17:35 PM
did she get bumped?

yeah. Almerola got into her

2012-02-23 03:18:29 PM
Danica is lucky as shiat that car turned and didn't go into the barrier nose first. I don't care how safe the barriers are, that could have been fatal.

2012-02-23 03:18:46 PM
That one aint on Danica. Just one of those things

2012-02-23 03:19:03 PM
Smoke didn't want to win this way.

2012-02-23 03:19:07 PM
Thank goodness for those Safer barriers and the head and neck restraints. Years ago a crash like that could easily have been - and sometimes WAS - fatal.

mikaloyd: Mikey has no friends

He is being interviewed on the radio now. He sounds very sad.

2012-02-23 03:19:16 PM
9beers: OK who is Danica going to stomp her feet and point her finger at?

I dunno, maybe Aric Alimrola, who came down and knock her clear off the track? Possibly?

Geez. Guy wrecks: "Oh, too bad. Some other jackass driver caused it." Danica wrecks: "SO, who's she going to BLAME this time?"

Seriously.

2012-02-23 03:19:30 PM
Was that on purpose so her boss could win?

2012-02-23 03:19:37 PM
I'm really looking forward to watching this race tonight. Mrs crotchgrabber got me a new TV.

2012-02-23 03:20:30 PM
That slow mo replay with her car going into the SAFER just looks like it hurt.

2012-02-23 03:20:41 PM
Nice move with taking her hands off the wheel before impact. First time I think I've seen that in NASCAR.

Standard open wheel move. Not taking your hands off the wheel in open wheel racing usually leads to broken thumbs in a crash.

2012-02-23 03:22:54 PM
That was an amazingly hard crash. Don't like the hype she carries, but never want to see a driver hurt.

Actually, blame McMurray, who set off a chain reaction by making a move without thinking about it. Nice going, dopey.

Robby Gordon's in the 500 - the crashing fun has been doubled!

2012-02-23 03:24:02 PM
ROBBY MADE IT!!!

2012-02-23 03:24:16 PM
Robby made the race??? Guess we can chalk up another 5 car wreck for the 500. Unless he blows up on lap 3...again

2012-02-23 03:25:12 PM
Damn, that rash looks harder every time they show it. Amazing how well the barriers work. I still question what would have happened if she would have went straight into it going that fast.

2012-02-23 03:25:17 PM
I cant believe Robby Gordom made the show!

I thought his week was done right at the start of this race.

Tony dissing Gatorage on MRN: "It should be Coke victory lane."
I wonder if he will still cash the check for winning the race?

I can't believe Robby Gordon made it into the 500. Figured he was going home.

Lots of pointing fingers going on in this Danica Patrick interview. *rolls eyes*

According to MRN and twitter, it really wasn't her fault this time.

Welcome to NASCAR at Daytona, Danica...

I think Jamie Mac dropped down onto Almirola too. It was kinda just racing.

I know, I was watching on TV. My point was people were expecting her to come out pointing fingers and blaming people, when in fact it was not her fault. And not only did she not do that, she gave a calm, collected interview.

MRN says 20 minutes after completion of first. But then they had cleanup, so I'm gonna go with...

SOON.

Good for her. I misunderstood you, sorry.

Stupid work (which I love!) getting in the way of seeing it on TV.

As someone said above, it's something carried over from open wheel racing. If you don't let go of the wheel in open wheel racing, you risk breaking your thumbs.

And to that point, even other NASCAR people are praising her for that move(Kevin Hamlin, Jeff Hammond), so take a hike, asshole.

In open wheel racing in particular, but even in stock cars, if your hands are still on the wheel when you go plowing into a wall at 150+ MPH, it's incredibly easy to break your wrists/arms. Hence, most open wheel drivers - especially in the current era - are taught to remove their hands from the wheel when it becomes clear they're going to impact and the car is uncorrectable.

But where do your put your hands? In open wheel cars, there really are only three places your hands/arms can even go: On the wheel, which is right out. To the sides - which in a hard impact can cause them to get hit by debris, smashed into a wall, or ripped from the socket. Only other place is flat against the head and upper torso, which gets them out of the impact zone, reduces debris exposure, and acts as a tertiary restraint and protection for the head.

On camera, especially in a stock car, it *looks* like an "OH NO I'M CRASHING!!!111 (panic)" type reaction. But in reality, especially for someone who came in through modern era open wheel, it's more of an "I don't particularly want any maiming or shattered broken bones" reaction"

At 180 miles per hour, turning the wheel isn't doing much after losing control like that.
