Isn't reporting this kind of like telling police that someone stole your heroin supply?

ArkAngel: Isn't reporting this kind of like telling police that someone stole your heroin supply?

Indeed. It reminds of that episode of COPs where the crackhead called the police to complain that she had been sold a chunk of plaster instead of the drugs she had paid for.

Having said that, I'd like to commend the submitter on the proper and appropriate use of the img1.fark.net tag. That's such a rarity on fark.

One of my happiest days was when an envelope containing a single $50 showed up at my 'special mailbox' from Nigeria. Through weeks of working up to my bible sales counter-scam I'd hoped for any kind of payoff, but a payoff that got me beer that weekend? Priceless.

It doesent actually say THEY reported it. Perhaps the people whos money it REALLY was reported the account and the explanation came out of that.

Not really. The victims of the scam were the ones who contacted police.

Keeping and spending that money herself feels about as much like stealing from the victims as it feels like stealing from the scammers because the scammers never had that money in their possession.

Or to quote TFA:
The car buyers who were ripped off reported the matter to police
..and not the Nigerian scammers.

This.

Nowhere in TFA other than the headline, does it say that she scammed the Nigerians. Had they delivered the cars, that would be one thing. But since they didn't, the ones who put up the money got scammed.

Indeed. I was going to ask about the Hero tag but she just jumped the queue. Funny that low-life characters hire low-life characters but not the sting we wanted.

What the Hell is aggravated fraud? Is that basically someone saying "I'm gonna' farking fraud you you farking farker!!" while punching them in the face?

Got this last night:

Dear Respondent,

I am currently attempting to acquaint myself with your family history in order to find a suitable heir whose right to inheritance the estate of our client (now deceased) is indefeasible by law provided you are a descendant from the same ancestor. Hence, we are currently handling a high valued financial portfolio in Malaysia of our late client who clearly shares your last name and it was recommended that I contact you.

In looking for a suitable heir apparent to our late client, I am specifically interested in the following information:

1. Your full names (no initials pls.)
2. Your Contact address.
3. Your Telephone and Fax number.
4. Your Date of Birth
5. Your Current Occupation.
[...]

I responded that since the first paragraph indicated they already knew my last name, they should respond with my name as a sort of "code phrase" to show they were trustworthy enough for me to consider their offer. I'm not holding my breath.

The lady didn't steal a damn thing from the Nigarians. She stole money from the people who thought they were buying cars.
Thats like if someone sells you the Brooklyn bridge, and you give me the money to give to the guy who fradulantly sold you said bridge, and I just keep it.
Bullshiat she didn't know those guys where scammers.

And if she truely didn't, then she would be an even worse person for stealing money from both the customers AND what she thought was an honest businessman.

Beats me (ha), but if it's anything like aggravated battery, it's committing fraud with the intent of doing serious harm to the victim. *shrug*.

I have a Nigerian pen pal, so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies. Actually she just sent me some Nigerian currency and coin. It amounts to 22 cents US but it's really neat since my daughter and I collect coins. So I'm going to send some U.S. and Canuck currency and coin in return. I'm going to actually send money to a Nigerian, I shall feel quite ironic myself.

As to TFA, sounds like she actually ripped off the people the scammers were attempting to rip off. If you steal money from a bank robber, you still stole it from the bank.

Lone Stranger: www.boners.com

Those are funny, but I'd like to know who thought those up. You must have one hell of an imagination if you come up with "I'd like to believe you are serious, if only I had a photo of two of you holding another with bras on and cucumbers in everyone's mouth, fresh buns on the man you're holding and a large brick of butter on your heads, maybe then I'd know you were for real."

It seems like there was a golden age of 419 ounterscamming, like five years or so ago, when those two Nigerians reenacted the parrot sketch, and the "Unknown stuntman" videos were extracted from two other guys.

Has anything that amazing been created recently?

If it was between her and the scammers, the courts would make them work it out themselves. One of these scams starts with an "African" man who has money from overpayment on a contract. He needs a foreign contact to move the money. An American who fell for that one tried to sue the scammer. The court said you can't sue because you lost money trying to commit fraud. Australian law comes from English common law and ought to work the same way.

CSB: My father got a very official looking email from somebody claiming to be from the FBI and stated they had reason to believe his bank account was used in a criminal activity and needed his account information to 'investage'.

My father then called the actual FBI and told them an imposter was posting emails claiming to be an FBI agent and was fishing for bank account information, and they pretty much told him they didn't care.

Someone at the local WalMart has been buying stuff and charging it to my parents bank account by bogus checks, one for $1900 and one for $1300. When parents asked "don't you ask for a picture ID when someone buys something this expensive?" WalMart said they don't care, they have insurance ! Good grief......
