"It all just doesn't add up, you know?" contestant Dan Hill said in an e-mail. "Who would hack their system to show people they were winners, what is in it for them?"

I believe that would be a Playstation Vita

Vitas are too expensive for Taco Bell. You'd be lucky to get a Game Boy Color from them.

That's BS! They know full well that in the future they are the only restaurant left. They can afford to fork over a little bit now!

The article does not say how many they were planning on giving away, but I imagine that the combination of bad press and overtime by the powers that be at TB (yeah, I know they are salaried, but personal time and aggravation is a factor) has to outweigh just handing out a few more game consoles.

I highly doubt that the misunderstanding about a gaming device is "one of the biggest slaps in the face that someone could ask for."

I know I would be mad as hell if this happened to me. I can't believe that some of you are criticizing people for being upset about this. I would be willing to bet more than half the people only bought that $5 box of diarrhea inducing hell, just hoping they would win.

2012-02-23 08:11:34 AM
The "I already posted it to Facebook" quote also included "you should enter too," which sounds suspiciously like someone's idea of consideration in contract law. People have sued, and won, in these cases before, falsely being notified of a win, as long as they could show some kind of consideration. My guess is someone's laying the groundwork in hopes of getting more out of this.

So not only did they not get a new gaming thingy, but they had to eat Taco Bell? Man, talk about a double whammy.

1. Told you have a terminal illness.
2. Your spouse has been unfaithful
3. You believe you have won a Playstation Vita, only to be told it's not true.

The misled contestants, who were told they won PlayStation Vitas on or around January 30, will all enter a "separate drawing" to win the system in late March.

Uhhhhhh no, that's not gonna cut it. If you told people they won something, then told them they didn't win something but you will put their name in a drawing to win something, that's fraud and you will be prosecuted and/or sued.

It's not fraud. Fraud implies that the entrants were deliberately mislead. It's only the entitlement crowd that are claiming it's fraud.

Plenty of people. McDonald's has been doing that Monopoly promotion for around 10 years now. Crap like this always moves products.

I would agree with this, but it sounds like some people tried to break into the system to get the A WINNAR IS YOU message, and some other people happened to see the same message. If Taco Bell never intended - or attempted to - send those messages to anyone, I would have a hard time seeing it as fraud. It would be like if your neighbor wrote me a letter from your name/address telling me to come take your television; without you actually providing that consent, it's not fraud on your part.

I can see why the people who were misinformed are angry - but, no, that doesn't make it fraud - and the company is doing about the best they can to fix it. On the other hand, whoever screwed this up needs a serious trip to the woodshed.

Also, their food is awful. I am one of those who can eat it without consequences, but it's still nasty.

Well there is nothing like a good colon cleansing...

I'm still not entirely clear on exactly what happened. Did someone hack the site and replace the normal entry url with one that leads to the "you are a winner!" page? If so, sounds like like TB just learned a good lesson in network security.

/should probably also sanitize their database inputs

Why do people say you get diarrhea from taco bell? I eat there about once a week and have never had this. I think all those people have IBR and just don't know it. If you eat only "healthy" food then decide to go and eat any fast food you most likely will get the runs. It's not because of the bell it's because of your own system.

I overheard a commercial one afternoon saying a PS Vita will be won every 15 minutes. For a split second I considered eating Taco Bell. Decided to wait until Vita's price comes down. $150 might be my price point for this but even that sounds high.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I actually like it now and then. The only problem I have is the price. I can get the two "steak" chalupas meal for $9, or I can go across the street to Chipotle and for the same price get a gigantic burrito that is often enough to last me through two meals.

1 every 15 minutes for however long the promotion runs. Yea, unless it's thousands of people I would think just giving them one might be better in the long run. Yes, it's not technically TB's fault this happened but it's in their lap at this point.

If the promotion didn't boost sales they wouldn't be doing it. So apparently LOTS of people buy it on the off chance they will win a $300 video game.

"Won't give you diarrhea" isn't something to be proud of. How about making something edible that is more than a big glop of corn, "meat", cheese and beans?

People that would not otherwise have dined at Taco Bell. It's called a promotion, and it's really not a very complicated concept.

If you feel the need to sue over this, you should probably seek psychiatric therapy first. You'd have to be a complete douchebag to pay a lawyer thousands of dollars to claim a video game system worth a couple of hundred bucks.

I went to Taco Bell to try this contest out (and eat some 'food') and when I ordered the $5 Box, the Taco Bell employees gave me all the contents of the box on a tray, minus the box.

You know... the box that had the contest entry code on it? THAT box?

I mentioned it, and they acted surprised and dug for the box, saying "We don't normally bother with the box for dine-in customers."

Riiiight.

I got my box. Didn't win. Whatever. I really don't have much interest in the Vita anyway. It's just another one of Sony's arrogant attempts to control media, and they've doomed the system with their pricing, proprietary B.S., and poor launch line-up.

...It's just a video game console. Not a "Attempt to control media" or whatever tinfoil nonsense that was. Launch line up has Uncharted, Wipeout, and about 5 other worth of purchase games. $250 is fine for what's essentially a portable ps3 with the features in it. What console isn't proprietary?

All the things in the world to complain about and you're getting indignant about a glorified Game Boy.

Warlordtrooper: I'm getting sick of arguing this point on the Mass effect forums. Expecting a company to live up to what it advertised is NOT having a sense of entitlement.

They are: they promised 1 every 15 minutes, not one to everyone who went to the site during some amount of time because some asshat felt like messing with the contest and making everyone look like winners. They sound like they're doing exactly what they should be doing: re-enter everyone who entered during that time for the handful of real ones that should have been handed out during that time.

Expecting the company to still honor the false winners outside the 1 every 15 minutes, given that they were apparently hacked (or at least has technical difficulties), IS a sense of entitlement. Yeah, it stinks to think you've won something, only to find out it was technical difficulties or something voiding the win, but don't be mad at Taco Bell--be mad at the person/people trying to hack the site.
