Sure, whatever. I think he's a dick.

Pretty farked up of the Academy. He proposed to them that he would dress like his character on the red carpet only and then change to a tux for the event, and they couldn't just say no. They took his tickets.

Unless he asked them to do it. Good publicity generation for his film.

Deja vu?

"Unless they're assured that nothing entertaining is going to happen on the Red Carpet, the Academy is not admitting Sacha Baron Cohen to the show,"

If one thing is anathema to the Academy Awards, it's entertainment.

I guess they just don't want to get bombed. Maybe they should put Frank Drebin on security detail.

Allow him to at least show up as a normal person first- if they see him in the coming out of the car as his character then escort him away. Otherwise if its just him dressed in a normal clothing attire and his wife Fisher then just let them in.

problem solved.

Didn't need another reason to not watch it, but OK... whatever

Does Hollywood actively try to make the Oscars boring and unwatchable? Because as it is, it's just a bunch of Hollywood insiders kissing each others asses, and unfortunately not in the literal sense (as that might be at least somewhat entertaining.)

Borat was amusing;Bruno OTOH was as awful as advertised. Hopefully,The Dictator delivers the goods.

But the Oscars WILL have roughly one hour of Cirque du Soleil?

Yeah. That's fair.

Regardless whether i like him or think he's funny, the Oscars should not be used to push an agenda, whether that be political (Brando, Redgrave, Gere), or promotional (Sasha Baren Cohen). Its about recognizing the nominees, and to abuse that exposure for any other purpose is to imply that you are bigger than the Academy, in which case, don't come if you think that.

No, it's incidental.

I suspect that part of the Academy's problem is that he wants to use his red carpet time as a pure movie promotion. If he were successful, then the marketing idiots would require all the stars to dress in costume to promote their movies, too. The red carpet part of the evening is currently a profit making fashion show for then networks, but that would quickly become a long series of commercials which people would ignore. I think it's a pretty smart decision on their part.

TheSignPost: Sure, whatever. I think he's a dick.

This too.

Exactly. Hire a better publicist and STFU.

I actually disagree with you when it comes to the award winners. They took the prize, they get their 45 seconds to say what they want to say to the whole country. If they want to thank their producers, push their political agenda, pimp their website or glare into the camera and drool, then that's their privilege.

Now Cohen hasn't won shiat, and isn't going to. He can fark himself.

So, when he turns up in the audience at the red carpet dressed as the dictator....... which is safe to assume he will now definately be doing...

That's better.

Actually, the Academy does take great care to be clear what sort of attire is acceptable. Parker and Stone have said that the reason they chose to wear evening gowns was to make sure they followed the "letter of the law" so they couldn't be refused admittance at the last minute.

Does anyone else think The Dictator looks like an Adam Sandler movie?

Now if they could ban that dumbass from ever making another movie I would be a happy man.

stevetherobot: Does anyone else think The Dictator looks like an Adam Sandler movie?

But Adam Sandler has made some movies that were actually funny. OK, so he's only made two actually funny movies, but that's still more than Cohen.

I wonder if they'll show the end where he's being dragged out of a hole and given a shotgun mouthwash.

Cohen might be an insufferable hack, but he's not that insufferable. Not by a long shot.

Benjamin Franklin, Ambrose Bierce and Mark Twain would like a word.

Also why are people assuming the costume would have anything to do with pushing a future movie? Or any past movie? And why is the Academy so freaking uptight?

They at least contributed to society in some way shape or form. All Cohen has given us is shiatty movies that depend upon taking advantage of idiots for it's humor. Get back to me when Cohen contributes to shaping a government, or a piece of classical literature.

Bierce did neither. And Twain wasn't trying to write great literature. And he had a blast ripping on those who did try.

Because it's a costume of the character he plays in his upcoming movie?
