Gay men in Kent County are being targeted and entrapped by Kent County Sheriff's deputies for behaviors that would be deemed acceptable for straight couples, a group of gay rights activist told the Kent County Commission on Tuesday.

A group including a Holland minister and a board member of Equality Michigan say sheriff's deputies arrested 33 gay men in county parks in 2010 under the state's soliciting and accosting statute, but claim about half of those arrests involved two men merely speaking to undercover deputies, or making casual contact like holding hands.

Miriam Aukerman, West Michigan staff attorney for the ACLU, which is investigating the allegations, said in half the reports she examined law officers initiated the contact with those they later arrested.

But doing it in an airport bathroom is still cool, right?

This is a real thing? I'm not gonna get pissed off about some back-assward Michigan hick town going out of its way to persecute gay men and then have it be all a joke on us libs, right?

If true, this is a despicable thing. However, I would like if we could get a story from a less obviously biased source. I doubt we're getting the whole story here.

There's a simple solution to this: Don't be gay.

Interesting. Where I live "soliciting" means attempting to initiate a business transaction, so this would require that the target agree to pay for (in this case) sexual services. I'm a little confused as to what the word means in Michigan that anything not involving an exchange of money could qualify.

Go be gay somewhere else. Like Saugatuck.

/What did they expect would happen once the Right got wind of Grand Rapids being in the top 10 gay cities in America?
//Kent County votes heavily Republican, while Grand Rapids itself usually polls Democratic by a small margin

What is the first thing to do if you are tired of getting flirted by gay men?

Get out of the Apple store.

Hey, baby. If I said you had a beautiful body, would you have me pepper sprayed?

Unless the solicitation involves some type of financial exchange for sex, they shouldn't be enforcing this.

Our great Mikado, virtuous man, when he to rule our land began, resolved to try a plan whereby young men might best be steadied. So he decreed, in words succinct, that all who flirted, leered or winked, unless connubially linked, should forthwith be beheaded, beheaded, beheaded; should forthwith be beheaded-
And I expect you'll all agree that he was right to so decree, and I am right, and you are right, and all is right as right can be!
And you are right. And we are right, And all is right, is right as right can be! And all is right as right can be! Right as right can be!
This stern decree, you'll understand, caused great dismay throughout the land, for young and old and shy and bold were equally affected. The youth who winked a roving eye, or breathed a non-connubial sigh, was thereupon condemned to die: He usually objected, objected, objected, he usually objected-
And you'll allow, as I expect, that he was right to so object, and I am right, and you are right, and everything is quite correct!
And you are right. And we are right, And everything is quite, is quite correct, And everything is quite correct, All is quite correct!

"These are just devastating experiences for these men," Beighley said. "Many of them are closeted and the consequences are so huge

Pretty sure "closeted" and "openly flirting in a public park" are kinda mutually exclusive.

I guess heterosexuality doesn't have a monopoly on idiots, eh.

//While you have a right to not have the cops busting down your door to find out your favorite sexual position, I think expecting the entire government to go out of its way to conspire to hide your openly revealed sexuality as demonstrated by your public behavior is sort of pushing it as far as privacy goes.

FTA:"So, hot guy starts chatting you up, out of the blue, in a public park, you really like him so you ask him to your place, and he arrests you. "

I'm no expert, but if the situation was the other way around and I asked some female back to my place after just meeting her, no matter how friendly she may seem, it probably would be frowned upon.

Who would frown upon you? The hot chick chatting you up in the park? Because she's the only one who would no and it would be her right to just decline and walk away.

It's a serious problem in some places. Normal people - i.e. people who are NOT "cruising" - cannot enjoy certain parks because they are basically stalked the moment they walk into them.

I'm all for gay rights and I'm not homophobic as long as the homosexuals are not following me in parks.

If I went to some park to exercise a while ago. Guy looking much too happy walks in my general direction, I give him a "do I know you?" sort of stare, He realizes I am not there for him and backs off.. This was a part that might be a known place for gay men to meet.

Are they taking on 'cottaging', trying to stop a public park from being a hookup site or just harrasing gay men?

Reminds me of the episode of "Campus PD" from last night. They caught a couple hanging out near the river and when they questioned them they said, "A lot of sexual things go on down there, you might want to avoid that area." He looks at the girl and says, "You'd probably be alright," then looking at the guy says, "But you might have some problems."

This was in Indiana.

wtf? Those gays are following you and walking in your proximity? Sounds like they need to be arrested and placed on the sex offender registry.

years ago they orchestrated a similar sting in my town 'cause the bathroom was a notorious glory hole. I didn't know that because any time I was at the park and had to take a leak I'd just water a tree like a good hick.

it all got thrown out on entrapment anyway.

now, at least according to craig's list, the dirty book store on the interstate is the local glory hole hotspot. no wonder there are always so many cars in the parking lot but no one ever seems to be inside.

people are weird.

I didn't mind the people I saw making out on the picnic table. It was the guy who was stalking me - purposefully following me even though I had no interest that bothered me.

I had just moved to that city and had no idea where to go hiking. The only thing that park was used for was gay people hooking up. Heterosexual males were not welcome there. I didn't see any females either. They probably weren't welcome either.

Ignoring the creepy factor, what is the legal difference between any meatmarketish bar around closing time and some of these hookup sites?

The only reason gays hook up at parks is because we know we can get sex. If women were more free with the pussy straight guys would be farking in all sorts of public places too.

CSB: Many years ago my right-wing Grandfather (now deceased) came to visit me in Madison. We walked on Willy St. and State St., among other places. He was visibly upset every time we walked past a gay/lesbian couple holding hands. Finally I got sick of it and asked him why he was so upset about that. He said it wasn't right. I asked him to tell me, specifically, how those two women holding hands had any negative impact on anybody (he always said if something isn't hurting anyone he doesn't care). He said it was against God's will. I asked him if he slept with any women while on shore leave when he was in the Navy (he met Grandma after getting out). He didn't want to talk about it anymore.

America will remember this anti-gay nonsense with as much shame as having been against inter-racial marriage. It hurts nobody, and brings joy to many. What's not to like about it?

Well I would say that it would be a problem if everyone starts turning that way. I'm all for LGBT rights and all, but I'm on the opinion that it should stay as a minority.

The gays do it there too. Not our homes, your home.

But your right, it is pathetic how gay men try to justify lewd behavior in public places. Instead, we shouldn't even bother trying. Like my fraternity brother and a girl he just met who I caught farking on a local beach, another straight college couple caught having sex in a parking lot, or my personal favorite, the video of a guy farking his girlfriend/wife at a baseball game. No explanation needed from them other than they were horny.
