How much money you should give to a homeless person:

As much as you feel like giving them.

2012-02-22 08:01:58 PM
I thought it would be .45

Wait, I thought Fark was against pointing and laughing at the Freepers. I'm confused.

Someone posted a screenshot of a woman Freeper claiming that Obama euthanized his own grandmother to gain sympathy points during the 08 election. I saw this yesterday and got to a point where I honestly don't know what to think of Free Republic anymore. Is this satire by now, at least by some folks? Are people at that site upping the ante as a joke?

You shouldn't give money to the homeless. You should give money to charities that are helping the homeless get back on their feet.

2012-02-22 08:07:52 PM
Really, you should give money to organizations that help the homeless, rather than directly to them.

I give $200 each year to the Atlanta Union Mission because they help the homeless get clean and back into society. Basically, they get them off crack and on Jesus. It works for them and it helps the city.

2012-02-22 08:07:58 PM
Humans requiring homes is a recent trend. It is not government's job to undermine charity and do this.

2012-02-22 08:08:21 PM
I'm a dirty socialist who wants to see moar gubbermint and even I wouldn't give to a homeless person.

There are many public and private programs in place to help, what isn't addressed is the need for mental help which sadly to many of the left fight to prevent.

On the other hand, if someone appears close to my age and also does not appear to be an undercover cop, I will often give someone a smoke when asked

Do the filth tag people for giving smokes?

There are many ways to give money to help the homeless that don't involve panhandling.

I give to the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless and buy the weekly newspaper being hawked by the local housing-impaired.

The freaking winos loitering outside my place get squat from me directly.

My favorite site on the Internet.

Pretty much the best example of;

THIS IS WHAT REPUBLICANS ACTUALLY BELIEVE.

I have been homeless. I never asked for spare change. It's possible to get by if you have a camper and get along with folks. People in that situation need a job.

People who ask for money on the street may be addicts. People in that situation need health care.

Not the same problem, different solutions.

Like Conservapedia, there are undoubtedly trolls, there to increase the crazy for lulz. One just has to wonder (again, like Conservapedia) whether or not the actual crazies outnumber the trolls.

There is a housing place near me for homeless/jobless veterans that the USO and American Legion run. It's kinda hard to walk by a bunch of dudes sitting on the sidewalk asking for help when you know they're all vets. Especially the ones that have on decorations from Vietnam.

What the hell can I do though? I volunteer and donate a lot of time and items, but I don't carry anything but plastic on me. Even if I did, I'm not in a financial situation where I can constantly hand out money. However, I usually hand 'em a cig if they ask.

If I have spare change, I give, and I'm not exactly wealthy. Partially because I know I might myself be in that position today, partially because even if some people will spend it on drugs or whatever, I don't want on my conscience the possibility that they really needed the money and I didn't even give them a cent.

/Then again, I don't get out much and my hometown doesn't have many panhandlers.
//So it's not like I'm giving often.
///The number of homeless in America is a national tragedy. One of the richest nations in the world and we let people die on the streets.

Living in Boston some homeless guy walks up to me

Him: gotta quarter?
Me: no
Him: Awww, c'mon man, just a dollar

why the hell does he think i'm willing to give him a dollar when I won't even give him a quarter?

2012-02-22 08:19:10 PM
I only give money to the homeless when I think they're drug addicts. It's one of the services that neither charity nor the state will provide, and if I've got a few bucks to spare, why not help someone get high?

I disagree. Democrats have championed these institutions, that all are setup to assist with mental health:

Boys Town, Childhelp, S.A.F.E., National Domestic Violence ....just to name a few off the top of my head.

many homeless advocacy groups have fought the forced medication of people who are homeless. Look up the lawsuits filed, particularly in NYC, as far back as when Reagan was president.

I gave a panhandler $20 and told him to go buy himself beer a few weeks ago.

I don't mind if someone decides not to give cash or change to the homeless; that's fine.

But when you can't get a job, which, let's be honest here folks, is a form of charity, that's when you realize this whole bootstrappy thing has gone too far. How can a homeless person get a decent job when he's got a BA and can't afford a suit for that office job interview? Or you go to flip burgers, but the potential boss discovered that you covered up the degree and won't hire you because you'll bolt the first chance you get? You don't understand how far the distance is between homelessness and employment until you look at your wardrobe and realize that even if you were offered a bank teller position, you don't have clothing nice enough to work there.

When people can't be bothered to do someone the favor of giving them a job, I don't really have much hope of receiving any other form of charity.

As a practicing malarite I find the best way to balance these sort of concerns is to hold a hunt wherein a capture humanoid(typically a homeless person) is released, and for the next day and night attempts to escape the prowling worshipers of the Beastlord such as myself. If he manages to survive, he wins his freedom as well as, perhaps, other things.

ftfa: " I will give that person whatever change is in my pocket, which might total less than a dollar, or which could be a couple dollars. If I had more income and if I carried cash more often, I would give more. In addition to the change I am offering, I am giving the message of unconditional love. This does something to better the human condition."

yeah, subtard, that supports your spoiler statement. You are a farking liar and an idiot.

t I agree with you on that 100%. I give food, water and I give cash to the people who look like they really need to get high. Addicts may need health care, but when I see a guy with one leg standing in the Texas heat, you sure as hell better believe I want that guy to go use my money to ease his suffering.

I accidentally gave a homeless guy my parking ticket for a parking garage once. I realized it after the fact when I got back to the garage and wondered where the hell the ticket was. Ended up having to pay the maximum. Still, he got a couple of bucks and a free parking ticket. I can only imagine how confusing that was.

So you get the homeless off crack, by getting them to have sex with the landscaper? Well somethings got to get them off drugs faster than the normal methods.
