humanshrapnel: What'd we pay for it? Can we still return FL before it hits 200 yrs old?

Maybe. But we'd have to check the "odometer's broken and may not reflect actual miles driven" box.

2012-02-22 09:23:04 PM
Ohio buys dumbass tag 16 years earlier.

2012-02-22 09:24:10 PM
I think Spain got the better of that deal.

2012-02-22 09:25:33 PM
Why would Spain want a territory that has large flying cockroaches?

Florida is what lets the US look like it's peeing on Cuba.

The upper part of Ohio was once a part of New York. We bought Florida to create a diversion for New Yorkers emigrating to Ohio. Looks like it worked.

Can we return it? We don't even need a refund on it.

In 1819, Miami University (Ohio) had already been up and running for a decade.

/just sayin'
/not denying there's plenty of crazy in Ohio; for better or worse, it's a cross-section of all things American (north/south, east/west, urban/rural, diversity, etc.)

They're right that this ruling will just mean that future wrecks will just be plundered and the loot melted down to bars. Who would put up all the capital to find the wreck just to have some country lay claim to something they lost hundreds of years ago in international waters?

Chakro: Isn't amazing how European countries bought and sold stuff they never owned to begin with?

Wrong:

"The late Pope gave these islands and mainland of the ocean and the contents hereof to the above-mentioned King and Queen, as is certified in writing and you may see the documents if you should so desire. Therefore, Their Highnesses are lords and masters of this land; they were acknowledged as such when this notice was posted, and were and are being served willingly and without resistance; then, their religious envoys were acknowledged and obeyed without delay, and all subjects unconditionally and of their own free will became Christians and thus they remain. Their Highnesses received their allegiance with joy and benignity and decreed that they be treated in this spirit like good and loyal vassals and you are under the obligation to do the same."

Although in all truthfulness, it was more like "these crazy Yanks will just goddamn steal this land from us, so we might as well sell it to them now and get a few bucks for it."

And that's exactly what we did do just 80 years later when we invaded and stole Cuba and the Philippines from them.

Florida sucks but I'd still rather live there than Ohio.

Cleveland? Akron? Cin-ci-farking-natti??

Ohio sucks.

Not wrong. There were people living here long before the Europeans and they owned the land. The Europeans never bought it from the Natives, they just claimed it as "discoverers". The natives didn't necessarily believe in individual possession of land but did believe in collective possession, as in a tribe could own it, but not an individual.

Dude, as the quoted letter indicated, the Europeans had their paperwork straight -they even offered to let the natives see the documents. The Americas belong to the monarch of Castile and Leon.
