In another disturbing sign of just how bad the economy is, Pennsylvania cuts its $300,000 animatronic groundhog that was used to promote the state lottery. May God help us all

PA could balance their budget if they taxed the gas companies 1% on all the natural gas they slurp out of the ground and sell to Canada.

Oh thank goodness for that! That little guy made me SO ANGRY!!!!

They also need to lose the tagline "PA Lottery - benefits older Pennsylvanians!"
Really? Not if you win. Then you benefit yourself and obviously hate old people.

i always wonder why no one ever tried to get that thing taken off the commercials ,since you could argue it was sort of like joe camel with cigarets.

Cannot think of anyone who thought that 'Guss' was cute or charming. He certainly did not make me want to buy scratch-tickets, but I did have an urge to load the groundhog rifle every time I saw him.

What the hell kind of state did I just move to? It blows my mind that states have lotteries at all, but a $300k groundhog...wtf.

This.
And I remember seeing a TV commercial that said "Benefits Older Pennsylvanians", and my elderly father said "B***S***, I never saw a penny of that". Good times, good times.

They should hold an auction for the right to beat the little sonofabiatch with a baseball bat. Probably raise more money than the lottery itself.

Is the groundhog entitled to unemployment benefits? He's got a lifestyle to support.

He's as bad as Joe Camel. But don't worry, it's not gambling -- just state-run gaming! Why is it that the government vilifies gambling in near even money games (blackjack, poker, etc.), but pays for advertising on the very unfair lottery? They don't want anyone crowding out their racket, of course.

PA probably needed the money to refurbish the bar in the State House.

2012-02-22 01:12:46 PM
I haven't seen the commercial, but animatronic, seriously? So they pay $300-400k to film a robot someone scrapped from Chuckie Cheese's? You could spend .1% of that to record a sock puppet with the same script and have it be just as effective. I thought these lotteries were supposed to help fund schools and so forth, not make lottery exec's and advertising agencies rich.

Anyway, am I the only one that liked Gus? I got a kick out of the little guy. You want to get rid of a groundhog, get rid of Phil. He's a dick.

I've never had very strong feelings on the matter one way or another. I guess I have stronger feelings for idiots who play the lottery than I do for ad execs who make a memorable (good or bad) character to hock their wares.

It's about time Gus the Groundhog went back in his hole. It's illegal for kids to buy lottery tickets. Gus should have been banned just like Joe Camel and the Budweiser frogs for ads that make adult products look attractive to children.
