I was thirty one when I went through boot camp, and I was older than all of the drill sargeants. When I was being picked up from boot camp, during the Christmas break..called the Exodus, my now ex-wife who was 10 years older than me came to Fort Jackson to pick me up. Some young sargeant gets who she's looking for, and yells out in a crowded room, W*** (my last name), YOUR MOTHER'S HERE! To tell, it wasn't a good ride back down to Flawiduh.

Crap, too slow. Sorry, Tom. I think it's great that she's signing up again. I wonder why the huge gap though from her Navy service until her Army service?

She had to apply three times and she had to put up with a ton of shiat, but when she threatened to resign, they gave it to her. The next youngest girl in her class was half her age. They must have thought she was some far-out old woman humping it over that course. I did it when I was 19 and it damn near wasted me. A tough motherfarker. She finished. She could have gone for Admiral, but she went for herself instead.

The basic training PT test passing thresholds for a 51-year-old woman must be pretty funny.
10 push ups in two minutes?
10 sit ups in two minutes?
2 mile run in under an hour?

Hey, it's a job. They must have changed the rules since I served. I changed branches and the Army didn't make me go through boot again. But this gal has been out for a while. It was probably a god idea to make her do it. Good for her. I sure wouldn't want to have to go through boot again.

I don't think my time in Benning in 1990 exactly makes me a junior, grandpa. I'm pointing out that the physical fitness test requirements in the army are far different for men and women, just as they are for teenagers and AARP members.
And yes, I'm in terrible shape right now.

I've been seriously running for 4 years now. My average mile time is 11 mins 47 secs (my short runs are 6 - 8 miles and my long runs are 10-14 miles). Most mornings I do 50 sit-ups and 40 pushups (takes about 3 -4 minutes for all).

Just making it obvious that troops =/= combat troops; just like relaxin' Jackson =/= Benning or even Leonard Wood.
It is actually 10 pushups yes, 9 next year. When they say outscored they do not mean outperformed.

The thing that raises my eyebrow is she can't deploy because of her age; then why the fark are they letting her in the Army? Why have her qualify with her weapon? I mean she isn't going out to meet the enemy; sounds like her job should be done by a civilian.
No worries though, we will just keep sending the same Soldiers over and over again. Thanks for the help "Marine Mom"

All that matters is that she is a tail-end boomer; that she has ruined your chances for happiness and should quit the army in order that some younger person should have an opportunity to kill. She burned too much oil and caused the national debt and is personally responsible for the right-wing facsist male agenda, because

Regulations, no doubt, require she have weapon skills. There's nothing wrong with recruiting for people to do office work. I suspect a member of the services is cheaper than a civilian and has already proven her willingness and ability to get up early, show up on time, follow orders, and get the job done without a lot of whingeing.

I'll try to say this without being snarky, so please understand I'm asking seriously. Have you ever been on an Army post? I mean a full sized one with a motor pool that could fill a few football fields, hospital that is the tallest building on post, and acres and acres of supply depots? Army still needs quartermasters, mechanics, office workers, doctors/nurses/radiation techs, etc. Plus with all the bases we have around the world she may not 'deploy' but she could end up in Germany, Japan, whatever. I DNRTFA, but depending what she chose for her MOS she could be sorely needed in a job we'd never hire a local civilian for over seas, like overseeing ammunition and firearms or other sensitive items.
As I always understood it, all Army soldiers train with weapons and the other physical stuff because you could end up anywhere in the world and you never know when your HQ could get overrun, so its not so much about chances of deployment, it's prudence. That and it instills discipline in a lot of people who've never had it.

Came in here to note that...my platoon leader at Ft. Stewart was female and very likely close in age to this NCO...I distinctly remember her jogging...well, speed walking (if that) for the 2 mile APFT test and she passed easily. She also couldn't do a proper push up to save her life.
Now, if this lady got the highest marks in the platoon on the 18-21 scale, I'd be impressed.
My personal best was 92 pushups, 103 situps, 12ish on the 2 mile. Can't recall the final APFT score but it was enough to have a patch. pretty sure it was over 290 to get one...
Honestly, not sure how they score the APFT now or if it's been modified (went through basic in late '95, got out in mid 99).

Yeah, my wife and I were both Army, she went to Camp Snoopy (Ft. Jackson) for basic, I went to Ft. Knox. Apparently there are some massive differences between places with male/female basic (Ft. Jackson) and all male (Knox, at the time...). Sure, the printed standards may be the same, but sheesh...I mentioned forced hydration (until the DS witnessed you vomiting into the saw dust pit) and she seemed amazed...and yes, we'd get smoked in teh same sawdust after puking in it. Good times.
