I'm okay with this

It appears to be voluntary choice by the convicted offender. I don't see a problem.

I do knot see a problem with this either.

This is the right way to handle convicted pedophiles and rapists, way to go Germany! To all those who think it's wrong, you should have to bunk with these bastards in jail a year before their scheduled castration, see how that goes.

As long as they keep to using the sexual offender tag for people who actually deserve it.

'So you were arrested for urinating in a public space? CASTRATION!'

2012-02-22 01:42:10 PM
My answer would be:

Sure. I'll get right on that.
Just as soon as sex offenders stop doing all the things they do.

"In the CPT's view, surgical castration of detained sexual offenders could easily be considered as amounting to degrading treatment," it added.

I think the choice is chemical castration or literal castration. California does the chemical castration choice for early release in some cases.

According to the report, authorities in Germany cited the low reoffending rate for those who have opted for physical castration in their defence of the practice.

Of 104 people who were operated on between 1970 and 80, only 3 percent have reoffended, compared to 46 percent of the 53 others who refused castration or who did not secure expert approval for the operation.

Voluntary and effective. Win-win, unless you're nuts.

Yeah, about that.....

//because in no way did the victims go through anything that could even be remotely construed as being close to "degrading"

wait a second.... in 10 years they only had 157 sex offenders ?????

Me thinks what they are doing to get those kinds of numbers is far more interesting then what they do to the morons that do offend.

In an alternate universe...

Germany offers convicted thieves aged over 25 the option of surgical amputation of the hands, if the operation is cleared by an expert, the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) said in a report.

Germany offers sex offenders aged over 25 the option of surgical castration or orchiectomy

Article needs more details. What's the other option, is this a requirement to get out of prison or out on parole, if the alternative is chemical castration is that permanent? Generally speaking, I disapprove of legal punishments which can't be reversed, under the principle that everyone farks up occassionally - but it can be really hard to apologize after you've mistakenly gassed somebody or cut their nuts off.

Very, very OK with this.

Or perhaps what they're not doing, such as classifying people who take a whiz behind a dumpster as a "sex offender". Apparently, Germany has not seen Corrections as a "job creator" for shrinks and social workers.

I just like how this story is filed under "misc.". I LOLed at that for some reason.

The king laughed. He had to. He had two.

If I were ever to be convicted of any such offense (wrongly, as I'd frankly rather die than do something that vile), I would choose the option that does not involve being castrated. It sounds to me like existing offenders could do the same, if they so wished. What is lacking in empathy about not feeling sorry for those who choose to take this option? What you're talking about here sounds more like pity than empathy.

oh, you've never offended anyone? careful, god is listening.

Certainly not that sort of offense.

TheGreatGazoo: Do they spread the dude's legs and use a sledge hammer?

I'm home sick and just finished watching that movie.

Gah, couldn't even understand what was happening for the first 20 minutes. Why are they all ken and barbie dolls?
I hate when movies cast actors that look so generic I cannot tell who is doing what. And it's so dark I had to turn the black level up to see what was going on half the time.

Gee whiz! What joke do I make here?

1.) Well, Germany is pretty screwed up. They might have enjoyed getting them removed in the right circumstances.

or

2.) Eunuch macht frei

2012-02-22 02:10:13 PM
Of 104 people who were operated on between 1970 and 80, only 3 percent have reoffended

That's 3 people then? 3 people who have had their balls removed, and thus no longer have any need for anything sexual, still kept sex offending? That's dedication right there.

2012-02-22 02:10:15 PM
The only problem I see here is Germany doesn't go far enough. They shouldn't offer the treatment, they should impose the treatment. If someone is a habitual sex offender they should forfeit their right to freedom and/or their nuts.

Amos Quito: So do they go after the ovaries of the female sex offenders?

I was wondering the same thing.

/genital mutilation?

2012-02-22 02:13:10 PM
It really depends on how they define "sexual offence".
Chemical castration was used on Alan Turing (as an alternative to prison).

We'll do it to an aggressive animal. Why not people?

Probably not locking up 17 year olds for having sex with their girlfriends helps keep the numbers down significantly.

Isn't the Pope German?

Hmmm...
