Dude is an ass for not doing what the crew said. Stupid rule? In my opinion, yes. They do have a point that a smoker seeing someone with an ecig might think it's ok and either light up, or be jealous and irritable because they can't.

Thre whole "vaping community" thing weirds me out, but it is handy when I need a recommendation for a new cig our how to work mine better.

"Exposure to mists may cause eye irritation, as well as upper respiratory tract irritation. Inhalation of the propylene glycol vapors appears to present no significant hazard in ordinary applications. However, limited human experience indicates that inhalation of propylene glycol mists could be irritating to some individuals.[19] Some research has suggested that propylene glycol not be used in applications where inhalation exposure or human eye contact with the spray mists of these materials is likely, such as fogs for theatrical productions or antifreeze solutions for emergency eye wash stations.[20]"

Like too much perfume, using a product which emits vapors carrying a drug, an enclosed place with forced proximity to others my not be the best choice.

I was on a flight where some Moran started to paint her nails. Imagine how that went over. The cabin attendant shut her down as soon as she found her. Not only was the solvent nauseating and had filled the cabin, but using a flammable liquid was against so many FAA regs that she could have had her arrested if she didn't comply.

I don't want to know how it works or compare specs with other e-cigarette vapers. I just want to stop smoking :)

Well, I'll be straight, there's some technical jargon involved depending on how much you want to tailor your experience to suit your needs and wants, but I can help sort it all out. I just sent you a needlessly long E-Mail covering the basics, so like I said in the message, fire away with whatever questions you might have. I've been there and done that for the most part. :)

You need to check out the Riva. Looks exactly like the eGo, but puts out 4.2 volts right off the charger doesn't dip below 3.7v. eGo is regulated at 3.2v.

I started on the eGo, loved it, then got some Rivas as backups (they are cheaper). Now my eGos are my backups.

"Big Tobacco" have been getting into the business of ecigs since the beginning. They just do it under different names... sometimes. They're not loosing any money over the ecig. Added regulations and brand displacement, on the other hand....

I use the eGo-T and I love it. Helps me cut back significantly on cigarettes. The problem I see with these being used on planes is the fact you exhale smoke. Someone could panic thinking it was from a fire of some sort. Use it in the lavatory and exhale slowly and towards the ground. The guy FTFA was a moron and should of quit when asked.

These is an odor produced by these, however, the odor is nothing in comparison to actual cigarettes. When I had the blueberry liquid in, a coworker remarked that it smelled like blueberry pancakes. Just because you can smoke these indoors doesn't mean you should go blowing it in everyone's face. Be courteous and most people will respect that.

Psychopusher: I don't know that the E-cig manufacturing process is particularly related to the drug manufacturing industry, apart from the fact that E-Liquids are typically mixed in a clean room environment with medical grade equipment. But that's simply to ensure purity and quality because this is something we ingest, so they kind of have to be. But since the product only contains nicotine as its only active ingredient, it shouldn't be regulated any harsher than tobacco cigarettes, and in fact should be regulated less specifically because it is a method of harm reduction that is healthier than tobacco cigarettes. (Although nobody can actually say that because making health claims makes them a drug, according to the FDA, even if you make no specific claims apart from "it is healthier than tobacco.")

With regard to nicotine concentrations however, there's a whole ...

21 CFR Parts 210 and 211 are referred to as GMP and they regulate things like clean rooms and the usage and maintenance of medical equipment. So the science-y part isn't the same, but the process occurs in the same type of environment. I agree there's an interesting distinction because it's not a therapeutic drug but I still think it should apply. I may be biased because I'm inside the industry but then again I'm also a smoker.

The variance I mentioned was based on a single product. The study I linked is heavy on jargon but worth a read if you have the time.

It seems pretty inconsiderate to use an e-cig in a spot where smoking isn't allowed, particularly on a freaking plane. It also seems pretty childish to defend such use by saying "nuh-uh, I'm not technically smoking".

Then again, as others have said, just be more farking discreet, and no one will give a fark. If you want to make a big issue out of it, then vaping will eventually get outlawed IMO.

2012-02-22 02:42:51 PM
Psychopusher: There's a lot of ignorance about E-cigs, and it's due in large part to the FDA's press release a year ago or so that they contain carcinogens, without mentioning specifically that the amount of carcinogens were in minute trace amounts that were statistically insignificant. The FDA wanted to control E-cigs as drug delivery devices and the E-liquid as a drug, but the SCOTUS told them they couldn't do that. Now that they're going to be regulated in the US as a tobacco product (which still isn't right) they still want to treat them like cigarettes, which is idiotic.

I love my E-cigs, quit over a year and a half ago because of them and never felt better. Now I do reviews and help people discover E-cigs so they can get off the cancer sticks.

That said though this guy was a bit of a douchenozzle. For fark's sake, either don't use the damn thing on the plane or learn to stealth vape.

Fizics: iron_city_ap: Fizics: I absolutely loathe smokers, most people at my office know this, but some still stubbornly try to smoke these electric cigarettes as if it doesn't cause discomfort and possible second-hand smoke effects. This is why I keep a small bottle of fox urine handy with a spray-nozzle. If they are going to pollute my air, I am going to spray them. Not surprisingly, it works every time, I have never had to spray the same smoker twice.

Back when I was smoking, if you would have sprayed me with fox urine, the next day I would have a can of pepper spray ready for you.

This is the attitude I confront every day. People have no respect and will continue to smoke their electric cigarettes in flagrant defiance of the rules. Quite frankly, people will not listen to direction or obey rules by nature and sometimes require a "swat on the nose" to remind them that the rules are indeed there for a reason and in fact, DO apply to them. I find that a spray of fox urine in the general face area of a smoker will make them think twice about electric cigarettes.

Why are you telling lies? Nobody believes you.

No, the "farking morons" are the people who decide to start smoking in the first place. And again, it's not about whether or not he was smoking an e-cigarette, it's about the rules of the airline.

For the assorted 'poisoning the air that I breath' commenter's.

First, what DOESN'T cause cancer?

Second, while the FDA did some testing and did find carcinogens, there was no mention of the fact that the levels were far lower than with actual cigarettes. Their beef seems mainly that among the e-cigarette manufacturers, there is inconsistency concerning the amount of nicotine administered. They also made no mention of the fact that many e-fluid providers offer a vast assortment of non-tobacco flavors, with or without nicotine and were these tested for harmful content?

I would think that vaporizing even natural fruit juice and inhaling it just might cause problems.

The e-cigarette is virtually scentless, meaning that the 'god-awful' smell non-smokers biatch about doesn't happen and the chemical makeup is different, meaning you'll not get that 'smokers coating' over every surface.

Plus, you can't start a fire with an e-cigarette unless you MacGyver it. You can drop it in volatile liquids, on beds, in chairs and on couches without risk of anything catching fire.

Naturally, the second major concern is that the device can be used as a delivery system for other illegal drugs. Well, heck, so can any other form of medical or OTC vaporizer or inhaler. Since the 'war on drugs' began, I've learned about ways to take drugs that I never even thought of.

I knew a guy who smoked crack with a beer can. So, should all beers now be made illegal because their cans can be used as an illegal substance delivery system?

Pretty well, however you look at it, e-cigs do far less damage than the real thing.

Check out the carcinogens in some of those plastic bottles you drink liquids from. You might just want to examine the vapors which come off frequently used lava rocks in propane BBQ grills. Examine the smoke from nearly any BBQ charcoal.

PVC plastic is known for carcinogens. Yet, it's used as a fluid delivery system in nearly every home. (Copper, btw, actually acts as a natural antibacterial substance, but is now expensive.)

I have noticed that the FDA has done little to change the manufacturing process of cigarettes. Nor have the companies themselves. Thanks to a previous FARKer, I read up on the current tobacco prep process and found out how much it has changed since I first started smoking, decades ago. I was not happy with what I found. (Tobacco 'tea' sprayed on the shredded tobacco to make it stronger.)

The FDA only required that tobacco companies remove the salt peter (potassium nitrate) from their cigarettes, which started being added in the late 50's to keep them from going out when you put them down. (Which also burned them up faster, making sure you'd have to buy more.) Plus, during WW2 the tobacco companies stopped using Japanese rice paper and switched to American acid cured pulp paper -- which has a lot more krap in it. After WW2, the influence of the big paper mill owners kept them from switching back.

Cleaning up their act will NOT give you a carcinogen free cigarette, but it can be made a whole lot less dangerous.

Right now, e-cigs are a good alternative. Even better if they get the tobacco taste right (which they haven't) and get regulated into consistency.

Besides, if you test the air in a packed jetliner, I'm quite sure you'll find a host of dangerous things, most of which will come from the passengers themselves. The airline companies, long ago, reduced seating space to cram in more people and I seriously doubt if they thoroughly clean the air vents very often. Changing the filters is cheaper and takes less time.

Nice. KBV make some excellent juices, I don't think you'll be disappointed. They're kind of perfectionists about flavours, which is part of the reason they sometimes close the store (apart from a high volume of orders to get through), they spend a lot of time getting the flavours just right.

Puffing on my Denali (by Mamu) with Mom and Pop Crazy Ape is delightful. I would also recommend High Brow -- really, give either of those two a try for your e-juice. The Denali is something you can't get so I heartily recommend a Buzz Pro.

I also recommend a more open forum than ECF but ECF is a good place for n00bs.

Although the amount of radiation absorbed during a flight depends on the plane's altitude and latitude and the current solar activity and weather conditions, the typical New York City-to-Los Angeles trip in a commercial airplane exposes a person to about 2 to 5 millirem (mrem) - less than half the dose received from a chest X-ray (10 mrem), according to the U.S Environmental Protection Agency. Rems are a measurement of the biological effect from exposure to radiation.

Super T Manufacturing makes a great line of vaporizers. I use an 18500 and an 18350 precise + with 510 dual coil atomizers, which gives a very nice amount of vapor and is a great dripping setup overall. I have used cartomizers and they always end up leaking on me. Dripping a 510 dc atomizer is a joy.

Check out Pink Spot for some great flavors and awesome customer service. Their Pink and Blu spot flavors mixed with a little menthol are awesome. Frozen lime drop is also quite good.

There is a ton of info out there and it can be overwhelming, but find something that works. I started with a mod, but something like an Ego might be a better starter kit if you don't want to mess with the gear so much at first.

As for TFA, the rule is asinine, but it's Continental's rule. Either stealth it or go to the lavatory. Very simple.

For you farkers complaining about the alleged health risks about the water vapor, which is no more smoke-like than steam, you don't know what you are talking about. Some basic research could set you straight. PG is in all sorts of stuff, the nicotine is absorbed by the person vaping, and since you are not lighting anything on fire, there is no smoke. Just because it looks like a cigarette (and in many cases with better e-cigs and mods they look nothing like cigarettes) doesn't mean it's a cigarette.

Good to see some other people here having some success with PVs.

... Almost forgot. Check out GrimmGreen on YouTube. He has some great info and reviews for anybody interested in the subject.

Hands down, the best eCig set up is an eGo (or eGo T) battery used with Boge 510 Low Resistance cartomizers, and the best place to order from is litecigusa.com. You will also need an eGo battery charger.

From Houston's KHOU website: (NEVER yell Allah on a plane)

Passengers said the unruly man was a problem from the beginning. After boarding Flight 1113, the man became upset because he was not seated next to his friend.
Then after the flight took off, he ignored the "No Smoking" sign and tried to light an electronic cigarette.

A flight attendant asked the passenger to turn off the cigarette, but he refused. The Middle Eastern man started screaming at the smaller woman.

"He was screaming, 'Allah is great, Allah is great,'" said Nancy Haywood, passenger. "And it kind of worries you when that happens, but believe me, there were enough men to hold him down."
And they did. Men on the plane jumped up and ran to assist the flight attendant.
"Every guy that was in my area was ready to go," said Mark Foster, passenger. "It was not even a thought. You can tell buckles were off and people were already leaning toward the aisles."

2012-02-22 06:29:00 PM
Actually, I can see an valid argument on why e-cigs should not be on an airplane. In theory if you don't know how to set up a mod, and you use a rather low mAh battery with a high resistance atomizer, you -could- potential cause the lithium battery to overheat and possibly explode. There was a story the other day about a guy getting messed up b/c his e-cig exploded in his face.

Of course, cell phones and laptops have the same small danger as well.

I don't smoke or "vape", but it has always looked to me like the e-cig commercials are pretty much saying: "Just think of all the uptight a-holes you can troll: What? Oh, it's not a cigarette, it's an *E*-cigarette. Now who's the douchebag?" [Puts arms around supermodels and walks away]

This guy has MUCH BIGGER problems than just a E-cig.

I am guessing he was heading to Houston to take a connecting flight back home to Saudi Arabia.

Here's a bit of follow-up on this story with more details: Link (new window). FTFA: Yazeed Mohammed Abunayyan was "yelling profanities and swinging his fist at the flight attendant, hitting or attempting to hit several passengers, and speaking or singing about Usama [Osama] bin Laden and his hatred of women"

kwame: lohphat: it's about not obeying the crew.

Exactly.

Slaxl: they don't harm a soul

Prove it.

Isn't that the exact way your use of a real doll was defended?

Pesky_Humans: Super T Manufacturing makes a great line of vaporizers. I use an 18500 and an 18350 precise + with 510 dual coil atomizers, which gives a very nice amount of vapor and is a great dripping setup overall. I have used cartomizers and they always end up leaking on me. Dripping a 510 dc atomizer is a joy.

The Precise line is very sweet looking, but like their drip tips, they're obscenely expensive. Precision crafted, sure, a Cadillac of a PV, but for a fixed-voltage device it's just too rich for my blood. I paid a lot for my ProVari, but since it's a variable voltage I'm okay with that.

The My Little Pony Killer: No smoking means no smoking. They don't care if it's "just water vapor". If you can't go 3 hours without a cigarette, DRIVE.

Someone skipped science class entirely....

/By your definition of "smoking", everyone in your office is "smoking" just by exhaling
//it's water vapor, you dolt

I started to quit using the disposables found at Sheetz just to see if it was viable to invest in the real thing...and it was

I found Greensmokes available at the local tobacco store, the online reviews were very good, albeit expensive, but i like the fact i can get what i need immediately at the store

i use my Greensmokes almost constantly, i bought like 3 starter kits that were around 20 bucks each

they work well for me, plenty of vapor, the units seem to work well, last long and are of good quality

i get liquid form Pink Spot...maybe not the best liquid, but i found the fruit flavors work best for me, it wasn't until i found the 36mg strength that Pink Spot offers that i was sure i could quit entirely -

i highly recommend e-cigs to anyone wanting an alternative to quitting

and i personally like the Greensmokes - and the Pink Spot liquid for it's high strength
