No, no. You see, when Rick Santorum said, "Satan has set his sights on the United States," what he really meant to say is that he decided to run for president in 2012.

Reagan gave us the gift of not seeing the suffering of homeless people.

Santorum could take us much further down that road.

I love that so many people have this idea that an omnipotent God and sometimes Satan are so involved and concerned in what is basically the current structure of human tribalism.

MY Tribe is most loved by God. So, obviously, Satan is most concerned with MY Tribe.

Our modern nation states are simply the latest and largest version of human tribalism. Sure, our tribes keep increasing in size, but it's still the same thing. Clan. Tribe. City-State. Loose empire. Nation-State. Unless we kill ourselves off, the nation-state will simply be another passing phase in the organization of our societies. If I did believe in a god, I don't think I could believe it would favor one human created tribal structure over another.

USSR... a very real life entity that had been in a staring contest with the US for, at the time of Reagan, 30+ years.

Culture Warrior bullshiat... an imaginary problem with no real life 'entity' to engage with, brought up because the Economy is improving during an election year.

The "evil empire" thing is only seen as a defining moment in the demise of the USSR by Americans. The USSR was already in a decline at that moment.

Gorby and Russia thought "Wow, the actor is good at delivering his lines".

Well, in fairness, the Satan speech was almost 4 years ago. But then again... what was going on in August 2008? Something that a conservative might equate to Satan attacking the USA... oh that's right! Obama was the presumptive nominee for the Dems in the presidential election that year. Obama running for president, Satan attacking the USA. Yup, sounds about right.

"We look at the shape of mainline Protestantism in this country and it is in shambles, it is gone from the world of Christianity as I see it."

Is he saying that Catholics need to save the protestants, that they are not following a true form of christianity?

FTFA: He warned that US politics and government were falling prey to the devil. "This is a spiritual war. And the Father of Lies has his sights on what you would think the Father of Lies would have his sights on: a good, decent, powerful, influential country - the United States of America. If you were Satan, who would you attack in this day and age?"

Satan "attacks all of us and he attacks all of our institutions", he insisted in the speech, and was even taking control of some Christian denominations. "We look at the shape of mainline Protestantism in this country and it is in shambles, it is gone from the world of Christianity as I see it."

The following quote is now the first thing to pop into my mind every time ol' frothy opens his mouth:

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis

The Satan speech, sure. I'm thinking of the the more recent reorientation of the GOP move on to other tried and true topics from the past 25-30 years. Abortion, birth control, immigrants (the bad kind mind you), non-specific/imaginary threats to the nation, etc. Oh, and the dig at the rest of Christianity (ie, protestants) was a nice touch on Ass-juice's part.

I heard that satan was euthanising people against their will in the Netherlands and raygun went in and personally kicked his ass.

Then we elected EurObama who told satan to go kill all the netherlanders to make room for his muslim orgies.

I read it somewhere.

I do like the fact, that he's been asked the question " Do you think Satan still has his eyes
set on the U.S". twice.

And he's ducked it twice. Which to me means "yes"

Go President Santorum

Hey, Rick, what did an actual conservative have to say about your ilk?

Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.

I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in "A," "B," "C" and "D." Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me? And I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate. I am warning them today: I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of "conservatism."

What I heard is him calling all of Mainline Protestantism non-Christian. Dog whistles to a few fundy Catholics as well a very loud signal to the Evangelical Fundamentalist Christianity community that is not considered part of Mainline Protestantism (which does not include Mormonism btw).

Although I'm hoping Mitt loses it tonight, confronts Rick, and just flat out says "Are you saying I'm not a Christian with that statement?"

I kinda hope they bring out Universal Suffrage as one of the more progressive changes we've made to the United States during its run.

Because, y'know, only people with land should decide shiat, right?

Fair point. Although in 2008, he wasn't in a position to actually have a shot at being the GOP Presidential Nominee, ousted from the Senate, etc.
This time around, he's that much closer to the Big Chair.

"Nation" literally means "tribe", though our tendency to use "tribe" to refer to specific associated family groups sort of confuses the issue. That's why we talk about stuff like "The Cherokee Nation" and the like. This is also why I tend to talk about the US as "The Union" or as a "State"; there is no one Nationality with an a priori claim to our government as there is in England, France or German. As a result, the United States is not a Nation-State at all, but rather, a Federation of States defined a citizenship which all nations have an equal claim to. One of the many ways the US was, in its time, a rather remarkable political experiment.
